strength and tightness so that thesame.
would not part or become weakened as" the shoe or moccasm Was creased under the toot Y fleXation of the Wearer. This particular portion of the 'shoe or moccasin receives 'maxi-V mum strain and it' is the purpose of this in-j vention to'introduce into the shoe structure a member which Will inlarge partreceive this strain so as to avoid weakening in any Way the seam which unites'the toe piece and the vamp. A y
IIeretofore various types of seams have been used to overcome this likelihood of weakening or separation of the toe piece and vamp, but these have been difficult to sew andv in many cases cumbersome and un.- sightly. f
In accordance with my 1nvention,'the up-l per and toe piece may be stitched together in usual manner, the sea-In being reenforced and protected by the Vintroduction of my novel bearing piece. v
` As a result of my reenforcement or bearing member it is possible to use a toe piece .ot' relatively light leather, the edge of which may contactpwith the edge of .the vampgto form a moccasin seam of uniform thickness throughout the length thereof. i
For the purposes of illustration, have shown a moccasinftype of shoe of general standard type, but may invention might equally Well be employed with an ordinary moccasion or any shoe Where the'toe piece and vamp are joined together.
Throughout the specification and drawings like referen'ce numerals are employed t0 indicate corresponding parts. Y
Fiff. l is a side view of moccasin shoe, my reeniorcing bearing member beingfindicat.- ed in dotted lines. A A Y n F ig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. I l

theY Atoe piece and vamp.
v `Thilethese bearings areof'real practical advantage inethatmucho, the strainiof the footfiexation iis takenrupfby the portions eX- tending below the seam, nevertheless the done only'by skilled operatives.
' in ,orderttog providelirfora -seaming together `of seam is diflicult to stitch and thus can be In my present invention, I providethe usual vamp l, united to atoe piece 2 by a seam which passes through the edges of the toe piece and vamp to produce the usual moccasin seam. Beneath the toe piece 2 and extending downward. to form the projecting laps 4 is ymy ,reenforcing bearing 4 Whichrv I vmay either be cemented tothe toe piece 2` and vamp 'g1 or may be stitched `thereto in I Y 7.5M to interfere with or mar the finished appear-r the general vicinity of the seam 3 so as not ance of the shoe. In the case of stitching. it
is usually also advisable to cement the flaps 4 tothe vamp to 'insure 'the samevremainf` ving 1n proper position While and after ,the shoe is Worn.
This bearing member 4'may be Vof rela` tively thin leather and the toe also may be of lighter leather than is usually used.
The cementingof the member 4 tothe toe 2 and vamp 1 provides a Water-tight construction Which Will prevent dampness enteringfthe shoe even though the seam;` itself breaksor Wears. In prlor constructions 1fk at any time the seam Was destroyed, the shoe tudinal iexations in the'material which cause seam at Ithis point. t
Various modiiications inthe seam uniting the toe piece and vamp and in the manner vvrinkling` and tend to` open or break the y90 lost its Waterproof character, and either had @loV of connecting the reenforcing member to those parts mayv obviously be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of my invention if Within the limits of the appended cla-im.
What I therefore claim and desirev to s'e-v cure by Letters Patent is: A
vIn footwear of the moccasin type, a toe.piece structure to substantially overlie the top of they foot, a vamp to snbstan-y tially embrace the sides of the foot,"a seam uniting the toe piece structureV With-:the
vamp, the toe piece structure being inclusive of outer and inner connected together;"'sec"4 tions, and flaps formed as downward eXten` sions Vof the inner section and fastened to the sides of the vamp bel'oWthe seam, said flaps being of a v,WidthV to extend downwardly from the sezun toV substantially 'overlie the sides of the ball portion of the foot, thus to effectively reinforce the vamp in the Vpacker region whereby sharp puckers are eliminated l and whereby the stress is Vdistributed substantially uniformly` over this erea'to prevent breakage of the seam.'
lIn testimony whereof I aix my signature.
