This invention relates to screens and more particularly to window screens, although certain featuresthereof may be employed with equal advantage for other purposes.
5 It contemplates more especially the provision of built-in screens for automatic concealment and exposure operable responsive to Lwind-ow displacement, thereby precluding re- -moval or attachment during the different seao sons of the year.

The window frame 1() is provided with side and end housings 17 and 18, respectively, and these are completely enclosed by pro erly shaped and sized board sidings 19 nailed or otherwise joined in any suitable manner 75 as commercial practice may dictate. End stiles 20 enclose the housing 18 to serve as a stop for the Window sashes 12 and 13 in their eXtreme closed positions, thereby shielding the opening defined by the frame 10 against a0 the elements. The usual sill 21 is provided immediately above the lower end housing 18, thereby approximating the structure of the standard window frame in every visual respect. Suitable counter-weights for the -85 sashes 12' and 13 may be provided or these may be dispensed with to meet any particular situation or desired condition of opera-- tion.
In order to provide summer closures for no the openings defined by the frame 10 responsive to the displacement of the sashes 12 and 13 from their normally closed positions, intermeshed wire strands defining flexible screens 22 and 23 are attached in any suitable o5 manner to the sashes 12 and 13, respectively, for operation responsive to the displacement thereof from their normally closed position, thereby serving as closures for the openings created in consequence thereof. 22 and 23 are anchored to cylindrical rollers 24 and 25 journalled in suitable brackets 26 disposed interiorly of the housing 18 for attachment to the end stiles 20. In consequence thereof, the rollers 24 and 25 are completely concealed from view for rotary movement around a transverse axis in parallelism With the edges of the sashes 12 and 13.
As shovvn, the screens 22 and 23 are Wound around the rolls 24 and 25, respectively, for attachment along an edg-e thereof by means of any suitable fasteners. The other edges 29 of the screens 22 and 23 are lodged Within transverse grooves 30 provided in the corre,-

In order to operate the screens 22v and 23 responsive Yto the displacement of the Window sashes 12 and 13, aligned sprockets 36, in this instance four, are Vattached to the extremities of the rollers 24-and 25 beyond the brackets 26 for confinement in the side housings 17,
the sprockets 36 on the respective rollers be- 4ing'in vertical `alignment for mesh with flexible chain members 37. As shown, the chain members 37 mesh with the teeth of the sprockets 36, and the diametral meshing eny gagement thereof is substantially equal to the diameter of the rollers 24 and 25 With the Without any strains or stresses thereon responsive to the corresponding displacement vof the Window sashes 12 and 13. This operation is enabled owing to the fact that the "linear movement of the screensl 22 and is `substantially the vsame through the ylengt-l thereof with the synchronized or corresponding displacement of the Window sashes 12 and 13. This is accomplished by virtue of the diametral equivalency between the sprockj sashes 12-13.
Various changes may be made in the embodiment of the invention herein specifically described Without departing from or sacril licing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination With a vvindovv frame, of an upper and a lovver sash slidable in said frame, rollers journalled in said frame beyond the extreme closed edge movement of said sashes, screens vier-.nd around said rollersfor edge attachmentto said sashes, aligned sprockets axially lined to the ends of said rollers, endless chain members in mesh With the aligned sprockets, and means for connecting said sashes jvvith'said endless chain members. In a device of the character described, the combination With a Window frame, of an upper and lower sash slidable in the stile of said frame, rollers journalled in said frame beyond the extreme closed edge movement ofsaid sashes, screens Wound around said rollers for edge attachment to said sash'es, aligned sprockets axially fixed to the ends of said rollers, endless chain members in mesh with aligned sprockets exteriorly of said stiles, there being slots in said stiles, rigid members fixed to said sashes for extension through said slots to connect With said endless chain members, and side housings on said frame for coniining said sprockets and chain members.

In a device of the character described, the combination With a Window frame, of an upper and lower sash slidable in the stile of said frame, rollers journalled in said frame beyond the eXtreme closed edge movement of said sashes, screens Wound around said rollers for edge attachment to said sashes, aligned Y sprockets axially iXed to the ends of said rollers, said sprockets and rollers having substantially the same diameter, endless chain members in mesh with aligned sprockets eX- teriorly of said stiles, there being slots in said stiles, rigid members fixed to said sashes for extension through said slots to connect with said endless chain members, and side housings on said frame for confining said sprockets Y and chain members.
