Description

Jan. l2, 1932. G. SICK HEATED MASSAGE DEVICE Filed Oct. 19. 1928 ATTYS.
Patented i2, 1932 j UNITED STATES GEORGE SICK, F LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND nna'rnn massaal: DEVISE Application mcd October 19, 1928, Serial No.
The present invention relates to heated massagin devices and, more es ciall to those of t e type which are'electrically eat- Other objects will appear in the course ofthe detailed description now to be given with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a section through one constructive embodiment of the inventlon; Fi 2 shows, in section, a slightly modified orm of the device represented in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an elevation of a second possible form of the invention.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, there is shown a massaging assembly consisting of a hollow shaft a. carrying a pair of handles b,a helicoidal resistance c spirally Wound on shaft a,-a two-wire cable c1 for supplying current to resistance 0,-an external massaging shell e having indentations, corrugations or the like formed thereon and freely rotatable on shaft a,-a layer of heat insulating material f interposed between elements c and e, and formed of superposed layers of asbestos held together by a binder, or of porcelain, plaster, rick or any other substance capable of storing the heat given ,oi by resistance c and slowly transmitting the heat so accumulated to shell e,- an insulating supporting shell for resistance c (ebonite, porcelain or metal covered with insulating material) ,-and asbestos rings adapted to heat insulate shell j from shaft a.
The essential novelty in the present invention lies in the structure of the combined wall e, In the prior art devices, the latter has been metal corresponding to element e which conducts the heat so rapidly from resistance c that either the subject being massaged is eX- posed to the danger of being scorched or else the operator is subjected to the annoyance of having to repeatedly pull cable c1 from its formed of a relatively thin sheet of 313,575, and in Switzerland October 84, 1927.
socket during the massaging operation. By interposing a layer of heatfstoring material between c and e, the temperature of e gradually rises during the course of massaging and the subject being massaged is able to better support relatively high temperatures. Moreover the device ma be used continuously without having to pu cable c1 from its socket.
Itis to be understood of course, that, while elements e and f have been shown separately-this being a preferred form of the invention-the may be replaced by a single relatively thlk wall of metallic or other appropriate material having a'large heat capacity. It will be noted, rhowever, that by' providing a thin external wall of metal (e and an internal layer of heat insulating material (f), a structure combining hi h heat capacity and ver light Weight is o tained. The structure s own invFig. 2 difers from the one represented in Fig. l only in providing means for changing external wall e so as to vary the sha e vof the protuberances formed thereon. 1ilere elements e and f are separated by a layer of Wire-gauze or perforated metal 71l adapted to maintain substance f in position when wall e isremoved. Wall eis supported between a removable endelement f1 and a non-removable element f2. By, unscrewing threaded ring f3, and sliding end-element f1 off of shaft a, wall e may be removed and replaced by a similar element of desired shape. Obviousl element fx may be made non-removable an f2 removable.
The structure represented in Fig. 3 is a single-ended heated massaging device intended to be used on special parts ofthe body.
The massage roll d is here rovided with k hemispherical extremities an 'is supported on a rigid curved arm g carrying cable 01 and covered by a heat insulating material g1 .such as varnish or shellac for preventing accidental scorching of the skin when arm g contacts therewith. To further heat insulate arm g, a heat insulating segment g2 formed of porcelain, mica, asbestos or the like may be interposed between the massage roll and arm g.
A massage instrument comprising a hollow shank, a sleeve of insulating material carried by said shank in fixed re ation thereto, an electrical heatin coil mounted on said sleeve, and a. rotatab e massage roll rotatably carried by said shank completely enclosing Said heating coil but spaced therefrom, sai
massage roll having an external composite wall composed of an exterior ap licator shell and an inner layer of solid reiiactory heat storing material lining said shell, said lining being exposed directly to the heat radiations of the coil and means passing through said shank for conducting current to sai coil.
whereof I have signed this GEORGES SICK.
In testimony specification.
