This invention relates to an improved indicia stamping device, particularly for num-' bering metal constructions such as vehicle chassis frames. 7 I g The main objects of the invention are to provide a portable device of, this kind of light Construction which, when in use-,. is supported; upon the 3 structure to which the indicia is beingiapplied; toprovide an imroved stamping device which may be applied to both fiat and angular metal bars of various sizes after the latter have been assembled in a substantially complete structure; to provide a manually operable stamp letter or figure 0 a series of numbers, letters or figures is independently held in place and applied under substantial pressure by a cam action; toprovide stamping devicewhichhas a work support having stationary engagement with t of said cams work for resisting the pressure 4 work and to provide means for adapting the support so as tq condition the stamping stocks of various thicknesses.

It is understood that the stamping device may be used on flat pieces of workas well as in channel and angle shaped members, in which case the body part 1 would restupon the edge of the work thereby predetermining the distance from the edge thereof at which the type 26 are applied. I
The device may be advantageously used in numbering vehicle frames for the spring pressed detents permit'any one of a series of pieces of type to be conveniently removed and replaced. The entire device is light in Weight and capable of being conveniently moved from one vehicle frame to another and in operation, substantially its entire weight may be supported upon the structure to which it is applied. The stamping device may be readily conditioned for applicatlon on pieces of work of different thicknesses by removing the demountable jaw 6 and replacing the-same by another j aw having a thickness which is adapted to retain the work in an embossing relation to the type during oscillation of the cam member 18.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has herein been shown and de scribed, it will be understood that various changes including the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be made witl'ioutdeparting from the spirit of my invention and it is not my intention to limit its scope other than by the terms of the appended claims.

An indicia stamping including a link member, a work supporting arm journaled 011 said member, a rocker arm journaled on said member having an arcuate face in related proximity to the end of said work supporting arm, an operating handle rigidly mounted on said rocker arm and type seated upon said arcuate face. p

An indicia stamping device including an oscillatable support, a member forming a pivo-t fo'rsaid support and a stationary abutment for engaging one side of a planular piece of work, means journaled on said support having an arcuate surface in related proximity tothe extremity of said Work abutting member and including a rigid operating handle, and embossing elements seated on said cam face and having rolling engagement with another side of 'said work. 7 v

An indicia stamping device including an 'os'cillatable support, a member forming a pivotfor said suppo'rt'and a stationary abut-- ment at its extremity for engaging a piece of work, means journaled on said support having an arcuate surface in related proximity to the extremity of said work abutting memher and including a rigid operating handle, and embossing elements seated on said cam face and having rolling engagement with a planular surface of said piece of work, said arcuate surfaces and oscillatable support being-adapted to successively and uniform-' 1y impress the working ends of "said embossing elements into said planular surface.
4. An indicia stamping device including an oscil-latable intermediate part, a member forming a pivot for said intermediate part, a jaw detachably mounted on said member having stationary engagement with a piece of work, "and an "oscillatable embossing member ournaled on said intermediate part having rolling "engagement with said piece of work, said intermediate part resting upon said work.

A portable stamping device for embossing indicia on vehicle chassis frames including an intermediate link, a pair of spaced members pivotally attached to said link, a Work engaging j aw on one of said members adapted for stationary engagement with one side of a bar of said frame, saidintermedi'ate link being engageable with said ba'r between said members so as to support said devices on the vehicle chassis during operation thereof and embossing means on the other member having rollingengagement with said bar in a plane parallel to said bar and intermediate the side surfaces thereof, said members being adapted to swing apart so as to permit said device to straddle said bar.
6. A portable stamping device for embossing indicia "on an angle bar including a swingab'le member adapted to rest upon one flange of said bar, a support pivotally mounted on said member for engaging one side of the other flange of said angle bar, said support being 'swingable relative to said member so as to permit the latter to be seated on said angle bar, a member having an arcuate peripheral portion journaled on said member, a plurality of embossingelements mounted on the periphery of said member and having rolling engagement with the other side of the latter flange, and 'a handle on said member for oscillating the same.
