. tioned between and removed from the lips of the smoker when occasion requires, and further for automatically snufling off the lighted end of a cigarette when the latter has been consumed to the point of attachment of the device with the cigarette.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a combined cigarette holder and snuiferwhich is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, thoroughly eflicient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views:
,position after it has Figure 4 is a fragmentary View of the device in perspective illustrating the position thereof after it has performed its snuiiing function.
' The body portion of the device is formec from a single length of spring wire of the desired gauge and includes a handle part, a pair of arms and a pair of oppositely disposed combined cigarette clamping and snuffer elements. The handle part, arms and elements will be more specifically referred to.
The material from which the body portion is set up is bent to provide a handle part 1 in the form of a resilient, split loop which merges into a pair of resilient arms 2, 3 of the desired length. The arms 2, 3 are integral with the ends 4, 5, respectively of the handle part- 1. The arm 2 is coiled in termediate its ends, as at 6.
The outer end of the arm 2 merges into a semi-circular part 7, the latter at one end terminates in a laterally disposed, rounded bend 8 which merges into a semi-circular part 9 formed at its free end wlth an angularly disposed portion 10 extending towards the part 7 and seating on the outer end of arm 2. The semi-circular parts 7, 9 are arranged in opposed, spaced relation and in connection with the parts 8, 10 provide a slot for a purpose to be referred to. The parts 7, 9 centrally thereof are coupled together by a cross-piece 11 and the latter functions in connection with the bend 8 and portion 10 to maintain the parts 7, 9 in spaced relation. The cross-piece 11 also provides a stop for a purpose to be presently referred to. The parts 7, 8, 9, and 10 provide a combined clamping and snuffer element of closed loop like form referred to generally at A.
The outer end of the arm 3 merges into a semi-circular part 12 which provides a combined coupling and snuffer element referred to generally at B and which is oppositely disposed with respect to the element A.
The part 12 extends between the parts 7, 9 and has its movement in a direction away from the parts 7, 9 arrested by the stop pro- LJQ vided by the cross-piece 11. The slot formed by the parts 7, 8, 9 and 10 provides a clearance forthe outer end of the arm 3 and the part 12 when the latter is shifted in adirection towards the parts 7, 9. The portion 10 of the part 9 acts as a stop to arrest the shifting movement of arm 3 when part 12 is shifted'in a direction towards parts 7, 9.
The combined clamping and snufiing elements-A,'B coact to. detachably secure acigarette 13 to the device. See Figures 1 and 2. When the device is detachably connected to the cigarette 13 the latter canbe conveniently positioned to be smoked between the lips of the smoker and removed therefrom when occasion requires. The elements A,. B are. resillently supported by the arms 2 respec-' tively and these latter in connection with the handle part lnorinally'tend to shift elements A and B towards each other thereby clamping the cigarette to the device. As the ele ments A, B normally tend to shift towards each other when in position for clamping the cigarette to the device, the arrangement provides that when the cigarette has been consumed to the point of connection between the device and the cigarette, the elements A' and B will he released and automatically function to snuff elf the lighted end of the, cigarette. When the elements A and B are released they shift towards each other to assume the position shown in Figures 3 and 4, but the movement relatively to each other will be arrested by the stop 11. When it is desired to attach a cigarette to the device, as.- suming that the device is in the position shown in r igure 3-, tl1e arms 2, 3 are moved towardseach other to enable the positioning of the cigarette betweenthe members A, B, after the cigarette has been positioned the arms 2-, 3 are released whereby the elements A, B set up a clamping action on the cigarette to detachably connect it to. the device- VVhatI claim is:
1. A device for the purpose set forth comprising a pair of resilient arms, a semi-circular shiftable combined clamping and snutfer element integral with and offset withrespect to the outer end of each arm, said elements being interengaged and oppositely disposed relatively to each other, one of said elements having a slot for the passage therethrough of the other of said elements, the said element formed with the slot provided with means each other.
for arresting the shifting movement in opposite directions of said elements relatively to 2. A device for the purpose set forth comprisinga pair of opposed resilient arms, a semi-circular shiftahle combined clamping and snuffer element integral with and offset with respect to the outer end of each arm, said elements being interengaged and oppositely disposed relatively to each other, one of saidel'ements having a slot for the passage therethrough of the other of saidelements, the
said element formed with the slot, provided with a stop for arresting the vmovement in one direction of said elements relatively to each other, and that element provided withthe stop having means for arresting the shifting movement of said elements relatively to and snuffer element integral with and ofiset with respect to the outer end of each arm, said elements heinginterengaged and oppositely disposed relatively toeach-other, one of said elements having aslot for the passage'therethrough of the other of said elements, the said element formedwit-hthe slotprovided with a stop for arresting the. movement in one direction of said elements relatively to eaoh'other, and a split resilient loop in ving its ends integral with the other ends of said arms. v V v 4;. Adevice for the purpose set forth comprising a pair of opposedresilient arms, a semi-circular, shiftable combined clamping and snutl'er element integral with and offset with respect to the outer end of each arm, said elements being interengaged and oppositely disposed relativel-yto each other, one of said elementshaving a slot for the passage therethrough of the other of, said elements, the said element formed with the slot provided with a stop for arresting, the movement in one direction ofsaid elements relatively to each other, that element provided with the stop having means for arresting the shifting movement of said elements relatively to each other in the opposite direction, and a split resilient loop having its ends integral with the other ends of said arms.
5. A device for the purpose set forth comprising a pair of opposedresilient arms, a semi-circular, shiftable combined clamping and snufler element integral with and offset with respect to the outer end of each arm, said elements being interengaged and oppositely disposed relatively to each other, one of said elements having a slot for the passage therethrough of the other of said elements, the said element formed with the slot provided with a stop for arresting the movement in one direction, of the said elements relatively to each other, a split resilient loop having its ends integral with the other ends of said arms,
and one of said arms provided with a horizontally disposed coil intermediate the ends thereof. v r v a In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature
