Referring now to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a chassis side sill or frame member. A body sill 2 is carried by the chassis frame member and supports suitable flooring 3 and covering ormat 4:. Acowl or shroud 5 rises from the body sill 2 at the or DELAWARE srLL ASSEMBLY 8 less. The body sill member 2is preferably formed of two sections 13 andld which are rigidly secured together in overlapping relation at a point between the pillars 9 and .12 and are curved longitudinally to conform to the longitudinal curvature of the vehicle body. In advance of thefront pillar 8 the forward section 13 of the body sill comprises an inverted channel 15 that opens downwardly and straddles the upper edge of the chassis sill 1. Fora portion of its length, preferably adjacent to the pillar 8, the outer wall 16 of i the channel 15 is provided at its lower edge with a lateral flange 17 that projects out: wardly therefrom and .constitutes an attaching flange for the cowl 5. From the front pillar 8 to thejointbetween the sections-13 and 14:, the forwardsection13 of the body sill preferably comprises in cross section two reverse channels 18 and 18' with the common web-19 thereof upon the outer sideof and secured by bolts 20 to the Verticalweb 21 0f the chassis sill l. ,The inner channel 18 constitutes a rearward extension of the channel 15 and straddles the upper edgeof the chassis frame member or sill 1, while the outer chan,

Preferably, the outer wall 22 of thechannel 18' extends upwardly at one side of and. terminates substantially flush with the upper surfacebf' the mat or floor covering 4 and constitutes anabutment for suitable weather-strips 23 and 24 extending transversely of the" doors lO and 11 respectively below the interior trimming material- 25 and 26 thereof. In rear of the forward section 18, the horizontal portion 27 of the rear section rests upon the upper edge of the chassis frame member 1, while the depending portion 28 of said rear section is upon the outer side of the web 21 of the chassis frame member and constitutes an attaching flange for the inwardly depressed Preferably, the outer wall 22 of the outer channel 18' is provided at its forward end with an inward deressed or embossed portion 30, to which a ateral flange 31 of the front pillar 8 is secured, and is provided adjacent to the forward end of the rear section 14 with a recess 32 for the reception of the intermediate pillar 12. As shown in Figure 14, the outer face of the pillar, attaching flange 31 is substantially flush with the outer face of the wall 22, and, asshown in Figures 9, 10 and 11, the lower end of the intermediate pillar 12 rests in the moose 32. This pillar 12 is preferably channel shaped with the channel thereof opening inwardly and has lateral attaching flanges 83 and 34 disposed upon and secured to the inner side of the outer wall 22 of the outer channel of the body sill. The rear quarter illar 9 is preferably mounted on a wheel easing bracket 35 which projects upwardly from and is rigidly secured to the rear section 14 of the body sill.
Thus, from the foregoing description, it will be readily apparent'that I have provided an exceptionally strong and durable sill structure, which, due to its construction, enables lighter gauge sheet metal to be used in the manufacture thereof, and which is designed in such a way that the sections 13 and 14 thereof may be readily formed and assembled and the body panels and parts such as the shroud or cowl 5, rear quarter panel or #11001 housing 19 and pillars 8 and 12 may be secured directlythereto, thereby obviating the use of extra or supplemental attaching brackets. The outer channel 18 of the body sillconceals the body sill securing elements, such as the members 20 and 20, so that a neat appearance is provided, and this outer channel may be either of constant or variable width throughout its length, as may be found desirable. In addition, the provision of the depressed portion and of the recess 32 in'the body sill serves to position the ' illars 8 and 12 with respect to'the sill and t ereby facilitates'and insures accuracy of assembly.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantage of'myinvention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not i limit myself to what is herein shown and a chassis sill, of a body sill carried thereby and including a section having inverted channels extending longitudinally thereof, a flange of one of said channels extending upwardly with a free edge constituting a door weather strip abutment, and a connection between said sills including an element received in and concealed by one of the channels aforesaid, said connection extending horizontally through said sills.
2. In a sill assembly, the combination with a chassis sill, of a body sill carried thereby and including a section having inverted channelsextending longitudinally thereof, one of said channels straddling a portion of said chassis sill and a wall of the other of said channels extending upwardly with the free edge constituting a door Weatherstrip abutment.
3. A sill having two oppositely opening longitudinally extending channel shaped portions, an outer wall of one of said channel shaped portions extending upwardly with a free edge constituting a door weather strip abutment.
4. A body sill formed of two sections having portions secured together in overlapping relation, one of said sections having oppositely opening channel shaped portions provided with a common intermediate web and an upwardly extending rear flange, a chassis sill, and fastening means extending through said web of said chassis sill.
5. In a sill assembly, the combination with a chassis sill having a vertical web and a lateral flange, of a body sill having a portion on said lateral flange and a depending portion upon the outer side of and secured to said web, a flange on said body sill free at its outer edge providing one of said portions being provided with means for concealing the securing means and constituting a door abutment.
