Description

DOOR HOLDER Filed April 24, 1928 Patented Jan. 5, 1932i- STATES WINFRED P. SHEPHERD, OF PASADENA, CALIFORIA DOOR HLDEIB.v
Application IedAprl 24, 1928. Serial No. 272,475.
My invention relates to a simple, inexpensive and portable door holder which can be readily placed under the bottom of a door, on the iioor, to hold said door in Vany desired position of ajar. A
iimong the salient objects of my invention are: to provide such a device having abase or body with a yielding member projecting thereform and adapted to be depressed and inserted under the bottom of the door, that is, between the floor and the bottoni of said door, and allow to press upwardly against the bottom edge of the door, said projection or extension pressing upwardly against the bottom ,of the door, while its base or body rests upon the floor; to provide such a device with a portion projecting from the outside away from the door and convenient to be depressed by the footA of a person, said device being adapted to be slipped under the bottom of a door by pushing it with the-"foot while the projecting part or extension is de-y pressed, whereby when the toot is removed,
said extension bears upwardly against the bottom of the door; to provide in a device oit i the character referred to an upstanding handle for the convenience of the user, whereby the projecting part or extension can be depressed by means of the handle, or by both the handle and the foot piece;and, in general, to provide a simple, practical and orna-V mental door holding vdevice of the character referred to.
In order to fully explain my invention, I have shown one practical embodiment thereof on the accompanying sheet of drawings,l
which l will now describe;
view of the lower portion of a door, ajar, with my improved device in place thereunder, with the handle ornament standing against the side of the door; f
Figure 2 is a plan view, partly in section; Figure 3 is a side or edge view, partly in section, and n Figure 4 is an enlarged vdetail view of the dished disc for holding the upper end of a spring.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, my device as here illustrated, comprises a body or base 4, and attached at their lower Vup into bores ll, in said base 4, said dished vextension 8. It will be seen that `the device vring to one side, as at 7 and in position to receive tliefoot ot a person ordepressing it. 'llhe opposite side of said member isprovided with a holding member or extension 8, adapted to catch up ,against thebottom of a door i lafter being inserted thereunder and released.
Twocoiled springs 9, 9, are seated up in the ends to said operating member Y, and normally hold the said operating member in its A@up position.vv Said springs at their upper ends are attached to a dished disc l0, forced disc'having a' struck-down loop l0 to which 70 the Yend of the spring is attached. At `its lower end said springs are held by pins l2. The springs are extended when said operating member is depressed and operate to move said operating member upwardly against the bottom of the door kwhen it is released.
A handle 13 is shown extended down through said body or base 4, and attached at its lowerendto said operating member, between the springs, and at its upper end, said handle is `provided with an ornament, here shown in the representation of a parrot 14.
Thus the device can be placed by using the handle and depressing the operating member thereby, or said operating member can be den pressed by the foot, on the projecting part In the drawings Fgu l is a, perspetve, 7 and slipped under the door, or the door moved to and over the holding member or willhold the door ajar in any position and constitutes an ornamental device conveniently used, or it can be embodied in a floor piece without the handle and operated by the foot,
in the manner hereinbefore described. It is small, portable and practicable and will not scar or mark the side of the door. y
I do not limit the invention to the details of construction shown for illustrative purposes, realizing that many changes canbe made therein Without departing romthe spirit thereof. Y
I claim: Y f
l. A door holding device including in combination a `base having a recess therein, a movable operating member in'said recess and projecting to one rside of said base to receive the foot of a person for depressing said operatin` member, an extension at the opposite side of said base on said operating `member adapted to be slipped under the bottom edge of a door to engage and holdthe same when released, and spring means normally moving said operating member upwardly against said door.
2. yA door holding device including in oombinat-ion a base, a movable member on said base, said movable member extending to one side o' said base in position to be engaged by the foot oi a person to depress the same, an extension from theopposite side of said movable member adaptedto be slippedunder the bottom edge of a door to vengage andhold the same, spring means normally raising said movable member, and handle attachedlto said movable member and extending upwardly along side of the door for operating said device by hand.
Signed at Los Angeles,` Los Angeles County, California, this lst day oi March.` i
