LIFT DEVICE Application filed May 8, 1929. Serial No. 861,366.
This invention relates to lift devices such as dumbwaiters, elevators and the like and particularly to the provision of an improved form of guide flange cooperating with the guide rails for such lifts; and the object of the invention is to provide a dumbwaiter or other lift device with one or more flanges involving a yieldable tongue portion cooperating with the guide rail or rails to facilitate the proper alineinent of the dumbwaiter on said rails and to compensate for expansion and contraction of the rails when subjected to different weather conditions or any slight variation in the rail spread, thus facilitating the free and easy movement of the dumbwaiter or other lift longitudinally of the rails in the use thereof and obviating the jamming or binding of such lift; a further object beingto'provid'e; a flange of the class specified which will permitof the quick and easy assemblage and removal of the lift with respect to the'rails for repair or other purposes; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction, efficient in use and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawin s form a part, of which the separate parts 0 my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic view showing part of the rails of a dumbwaiter or other shaft showing a dumbwaiter arranged in operative engagement with said rails.

In the several figures of the drawings, I
have shown at 10 and 10a, the two guide rails commonly employed in dumbwaiter shafts and other compartments in a building in which lifts are arranged, said rails being secured to cross bars and spacing members 11 arranged at vertically spaced intervals, the latter being secured to one wall 12 of the shaft as will be apparent.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, I have shown at 13 part of the upper structure of the shaft in connection with which pulleys 14 and 15 are mounted, said pulleys guiding a rope or cable 16 which is attached to the upper end of the dumbwaiter or other lift 17 and to the counter-balance weight 18 arranged to travel vertically between the rails 10-1001, the weight having projecting tongues 18a which operate in grooves 19 formed on the adjacent faces of the rails 10-10a.
The rails 1010a are provided with outwardly extending flanges 20 forming grooves in which other flanges 21 and 22 on the dumbwaiter 11 are adapted to operate. The flanges 21 and 22 which may also be termed guide shoes are arranged vertically on one side wall of the dumbwaiter 17 which is of the usual or any desired construction, the flange 22 being of conventional form whereas the flange 21 is made according to my invention.
As seen in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, the flange 21 consists of a housing 23 in which the flange proper 21 is movably supported with part of the flange within the housing 23 having upwardly and downwardly projecting'lugs 24 which limit the outward movement of said flange by the action of one or more springs 25 arranged in the housing 23 and operating upon said flange. as to maintain the dumbwaiter 17 in firm and positive engagement with the rails 10 10a. and yet the movable and tensionally controlled flange 21 will compensate for any unevenness in said rails which may be caused by improper installation or by expansion or J contraction of said rails, thus preventing any possible jamming of the dumbwaiter in itsmovement vertically on said rails.

In Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings, I have shown a slight modification and in this figure, like references will designate like parts with the exception of the flange 21 and substituted for the latter is a flange or shoe 26. This flange 26, instead of being arranged in the housing, is coupled with the side wall of the dumbwaiter by a plurality of screws or bolts 27, one of which is shown in said figures, the bolts passing through elongated slots 28 arranged transversely of the flange strip or shoe 26. Elongated recesses 29 are also arranged in said strip to receive the heads of screws or bolts 27 so that the same may be countersunk in said strip to clear the cross ties or bars 11 as will be a parent. With this construction, a plurality o springs 30, one of which is shown, is coupled with the dumbwaiter 17 and arranged to engage the outer edge of the strip or shoe 2G to normally hold the same in engagement with the rail 10 and to provide for the expansion and unevenness that may exist in the rails 10 10aas in the structure shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive.
It will be understood that while I have shown two forms of construction for carrying my invention into effect and have further illustrated the invention applied to a specific type of apparatus that my invention is not limited in this respect; and various other changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with a lift device mounted to move longitudinally of guide rails, of two guide flanges disposed adjacent opposite sides of the lift and arranged vertically thereon in parallel relation with respect to the guide rails. one of said flanges comprising an elongated bar arranged vertically on the lift, and a housing in which said bar is movably supported to move toward and from the adjacent guide rail, and means at the upper and lower ends of said bar to limit the outward movement of said bar with respect to the housing. and tensional means disposed between the inner face of the bar and said housing for normally supporting the bar or flange in extended position to tensionally engage the adjacent guide rail in the movement of the lift longitudinally of the guide rails.
2. The combination with a lift device mounted to move longitudinally of guide rails, of two guide flanges disposed adjacent opposite sides of the lift and arranged vertically thereon in parallel relation with re spect to the guide rails, one of said flanges comprising an elongated bar arranged vertically on the lift and a housing in which said bar is movably supported to move toward and from the adjacent guide rail, means at the upper and lower ends of said bar to limit the outward movement of said bar with respect to the housing, and tensional means disposed between the inner face of the bar and said housing for normally supporting the bar or flange in extended position to tensionally engage the adjacent guide rail in the movement of the lift longitudinally of the guide rails, said first named means including projecting members on the upper and lower ends of the bar cooperating with the housing.
3. The combination with a dumbwaiter mounted to move longitudinally of guide rails, of two guide flanges arranged vertically on one wall of the dumbwaiter adjacent opposite sides thereof and longitudinally with respect to said guide rails, one of said flanges being in the form of an elongated bar of a length substantially equal to the height of the dumbwaiter, means adjacent the ends of said bar for movably supporting the same in connection with the dumbwaiter and for limiting the movement thereof toward and from the other guide flange, and tensional means cooperating with said movable bar to normally support the same in a direction toward the other guide flange, and to permit said bar to yield outwardly against the action of said tensional means.
