Description

AIR CONDITIONING APPARATUS FIIed Feb.
entorno building which will operate without Patented Dec. 299 123i amusante.
ciable resistance to the rapid circulate-Un or the i.
Another object of the invention in providing a case having sidewalls and a top l and bottom connected therewith9 said case having an inlet at one end, and an outlet its other end, disposed 1n one ci the sidewalls thereof, said sidewalls being curved te rin in conjunction with said top botv rangement oi toni an elbow leading up to said outlet.
A still further object resides in providing spaced curved deiolectors of subsi same length within said elbow leading H outlet upon which the laden l air irnpinge so as to remove the surpins water thererom.
ther objects reside in the details of construction and the novel combination and arparts hereinafter described and claimed.
ln the drawings illustrating my invention in one form:
Fig. 1 is a plan sectional View of an air conditioning apparatus illustrating an embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 isan elevational view of the structure shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
ln buildings and in rooms of existing .buildings where itbecomes impracticable to install heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems utilizing a central air circulating and conditioning apparatus'- my invention may be advantageously used due to the fact that each unit constructed in accordance with my invention forms a complete air conditioning unit which may be hung from the ceiling and situated wherever desired in the particular room to be heated and ventilated.
('llhe apparatus embodying my invention consists primarily ofa case A of rectangular cross section open at one end as indicated at to form an air inlet. This case consists of sidewalls 11 and 12, a bottom 13 and a top throughou 1- connected therewith as clearly illustrated in Figs. l and.
The case L is constructed with an elbow B connecting said case with an angular enten.- sicn C of casing issuing outwardly thererem e 'glit angles thereto. lie end oJ3 tl is ertens i ase A 1s also open as ind-ic 15 to ier n an air outlet which. as will be 10 and due te the shortness or the branch C i parallel to ene another ir full extent.
At the 10 of case A a heater 18 wnich may be a radiator of eicner f the direct er indirect type or which may be any other suitable heating device through which the air may pass and which is arranged to give o heat to the air on its passage therethrough. For purposes of illustration ll have shown a lin type of radiator comprising two headers 21 and 122 connected together by means of a number of tubes 22 which are arranged in spaced relation and have tins 23 for increasing the radiating surface thereof. llhe header 21 is connected to a suitable steam pipe 19 leading to the steam boiler of the building while the header 122 is connected to a return pipe running back to the boiler. When air is forced through this radiator -the same becomes heated by, comingrin contact with the lins 23 and the tubes 22 of said radiator entering the interior of case A. at an increased temperature.
For forcing the air through the apparatus l employ a fan 25 driven by an electric motor 26. rll`his ian and motor are supported on a spider 27 which is attached to a funnelshaped mounting 28 directly attached to the radiator 18. rllhe fan 25 is positioned in a circular opening 29 in such mounting which causes the air to be drawn from without the fan and forced through the heater 18 andthe case A.. A downwardly extending duct 30 having an elbow 31 envelops the fan 25 and serves to pick up the lower stra 'from the portion oit the room ydoor and to conduct it to the air coA apparatus proper.
llithin the interior of the cas-c forms a spraying or air washing cnc* and immediately rearwardly oi 18 is positioned a spraying devic consists of two nozzles 3/1 and d towards each other and pointed radiator 18. These nozzles are ce water supply pipe 36 whiolthrough the top 14 of case l nected to any suitable source oi ln operation, water passing spray 33 is vaporized and directe the radiator 18 in the opposite cfr the passage of the air therethrou causes the air as it passes throng Y ber 32 to become thoroughly washed laden with moisture. All the surplus travels to one end of case A where it is collected bv a trough 3? and conducted device by means of adrain 38. For ing and inspecting the spraying device 33 l provide a hand hole 50 in wall 11 of case En which is located directly opposite said spraying device. This hole may be closed by means of a slide 51 movable along a guideway 52 secured to said wall 11 along the marginal c the hole 50. By raising said slide portions oi access may be had to the interior the chamber 32 through hole 50.
l/Vithin the portion of case f1 forming the elbow B and the angular extension 'C thereof are arranged a plurality of spaced deflector plates 39 which extend between the top 111 and bottom 13 of said case and are secured thereto. These deliectors are 'formed with a curved portion 40 connecting two tangential portions 41 and 42 situated at right angles to each other. lt will be noted that the curvature of the curved portions 40 of these deflectors varies so that said delectors are substantially equally spaced throughout their eXtent. The tangential portions 42 of these deflectors extendup to within a short distance of the outlet 15 making the lsame of increasing length from wall 11 to wall 12 as clearly shown in Fig. 1. At the same time the other tangential portions l11 of said delectors are formed of decreasing length from wall 11 to wall 12 so that the total surface of each of the deiiectors 39 is approximately the same.
'lhe detlectors 39 serve a dual purpose. The air passing through the devicev being heated by the radiator 18 in passing along said de'lectors causes the same to be heated to a degree of temperature considerably above that of the water sprayed into the air. These deiectors in turn trans-.ter the heat given to them to the particles oi? water in the and coming in Contact using the same to become more and vaporized. rt the same the abrupt change of direction ture laden air in passing along ecrors, the larger particles of moisnled in the air are precipitatel @ne curved portions 110 and the tanportions L12 of said dedectors and .f i moisture is not vaporiaed thereby y'nwardly along said de'iectors and bottom 13 inte trough 3.T where onducted from the device through 33. The air in passing through the tween the dei'iectors 39 is divided r, all orn which arV treated in subsame manner and subjected to the same area of deileotor surf .ias the effect of producing a urliA rature and humidity in the out- For regulating the `dow through the outlet 1:3 l employ number or" louver slats lei which are pivoted in the walls 11 and 12 of the extension C of case A at the ends thereof. 'lhese slats slope downwardly as shown in Fig. 3 so as to direct the discharged downwardly into the room causing a complete circulation therein. rThe ends of said slats are connected in the usual way through crank arms l13 with a lever by means of which the same may be simultaneously moved 'to open or close the opening 15 as de sired. lt will be noted that theselouver slats extend at right angles to the deector plates 39 so as to maintain a uniform iovv otair between all of said deflector plates regardless or the degree of opening through the outlet 15.
rhe invention is highly advantageous in that the same is simple and not apt to get out of order. 'Only a slight resistance is oilered to the flow of air through the device so that the device has a large capacity and is hence capable of circulating large quantities of air. ylhe air on leaving the apparatus is of uniform humidity freed from dust and other impurities. By regulating the flow of the steam to radiator 18 and the water to the spray 33 by means of valves not illustrated the degree of temperature and humidity may be varied to meet the requirements.
