H. A. BACHLEDA WINDOW SASH RETAINER Filed 001:. 15, 1950 ,ZEzrrzPi'uZ Fae/z 1860 n/ A llomey Patented Dec. 22, 1931 Uldlitll) Last-64s HARRIET A. BACHLEDA OFCAMERON, WISCONSIN -WINDOW RETAINER Application filed October 15,1930. Serial No. 488,918,
This invention relates to an improved win- I dow fixture or sash retainer which is primarily designed for use and association with a pair of associated sliding sashes mounted in the frame wherein sashweights and cords and pulleys are eliminated.
The inventive conception comprehends a fastener or retainer which is more particularly in the nature of a check, the same being characterized by a pair of associated fixtures, one on the upper sash and one on the lower sash, said fixtures being constructed for interconnected sliding cooperation, whereby to limit the downward sliding of the upper sash.
The specific details and relative arrange ment and association will become more readily apparent from the following description and drawings.
in the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevational view showing one of the retainers mounted in position on the companion sliding sashes.
Figure 2 is a detail view showing the arrangement and association of parts more plainly. V
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view.
The window frame is denoted generally by the reference character 4. The upper sash is indicated at 5 and the lower sashat 6. On the inner surface of the vertical rail of the upper sash is a fixture denoted by the numeral 7. This comprises a substantially U-shaped bracket 8 having apertured ears 9 at its 0pposite ends designed to accommodate fastening screws 10.
The elongated connecting portion of the bracket is formed with an elongated slot 11 opening through the bottom of the bracket as shown in Figure 2 to provide an entrance to the slot. At longitudinally spaced points, are transverse notches orkeeper seats 12 and 13.
There is a primary slide plate 14 mounted on the upper edge of the lower sash and this has a reduced inner end or neck portion 15 provided with an upstanding head 16 designed to enter and slide in the slot 11. This plate is slotted, andmaintained in position by. securlngscrews 17. It is thus adjustable to insure proper alinement of the head 16 p with the lower entrance portion of the slot 11. Thus by lowering the upper sash, the head 16 Willenter the slots and move to the upper end thereof, thuslimiting the downward sliding movement of the sash 5.
The numeral 19 designates a secondary latch or slide in the nature of a slotted plate superimposed on the main retaining plate 14 and held in place by the same screws 18. At its inner end this plate 19 is formed with an I upstanding finger grip or knob 20. The inner end or tongue portion of this secondary retainer is designed. to be selectively engaged with the keepers 12 and 13 respectively so as to provide foradjustablemaintenance of the upper sash. p
In other words, the sash can be lowered vpartly until the plate 19 comes opposite the first keeper13. Then the slide plate 20 canbe slipped into. this keeper to hold the sashes in this regulated relative position, or the plate 20 may be slid into the keeper 12 to provide for a'second stop. ThusI provide a'sort of duplex latch arrangement, wherein the pa. mary headed slide retainerll moves coinpletely tothe upper end of the slot 11 for lowering the upper sash a predetermined amount, and wherein the secondary sliding retainer or latch 20 is usable at intermediate P01115178 for adjustable maintenance of said sas It is thought that persons skilled in the-' art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded- 590 as unnecessary. V 1
Minor changes in shape, size, and rearrangement of details coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice if desired.
Iclaim: I I
1. In a structure of the class described,,in1 V combination, a window frame, a pair of com panion sliding sashes mounted therein a substantially U-shaped bracket fixedly attached to the upper sash, said bracket having Y a longitudinal slot formed therein, a slotted retaining plate on the upper rail of the lower sash having a reduced outer end portion terminating in a-laterally directed head, said 7 reduced portion being designed to fit in the slot and the-head being designed for co-operation with the bracket to limit the downward sliding movement of the upper sash, 10 and retaining screws for maintaining said slide in position, flsaid bracket "being provided with longitudinally spaced transverse keeper notches, and a secondarysliding latch mounted on said first named slide and having its inner end pro'jectible selectively-into said notches for the purpose stated.
2. In a structure of the class-described, in combination, a window frame, a-pair of [companion sliding upper-and lower sashes mounted inisaid frame, a slidable latch plate mountedon the upper frame bar of the low er sash and having an upstanding retaining head at its inner end, and a substantially U shaped co-operating bracket onr the adja Ucent'lower end portion of the-complemental :vertical "frame bar of said upper sash, said 1 bracket having a guide slot provided'atits bottom with ,an :entrance opening through which said head is movable, whereby when 330 said upper sash is :lowered, the head enters said slot and allows the upper sash to move downwardly until the head has'reached the upper end ofthe slot, said brac'ketrbeing provided with longitudinally spaced transverse slots intersecting said longitudinal slot and defining upper, and lower pairs offkeeper notches, anda finger piece equipped secondary retainer slidably vmounted on said first named plate and having its inner .end 10- 0 called for selective projection into said .notches to provide an adjustable stop for co-opera'tion withsaid bracket. 7 In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
