Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
RANSOM SABIN, OF SHELBY, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN MAGEE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN STIRRUPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l83,'708, dated October 24, 1876; application led July 22, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RANSOM SABIN, of Shelby, in the county of .Oceana and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Stirrup, of which the following is a specication:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved stirrup; and Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the same on line c c, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will first be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A represents a stirrup, that is made of any suitable metal, and bent from the shank downward, with a slight outward curve into a horizontal part, B, and then upwardly and slightly outwardly, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to form a stirrup open at the top and side.
The horizontal part of the stirrup is made of sufficient width, so as to give a broad support for the foot, being so arranged that it can be used at the toe, ball, or instep, and make it thereby easier for the foot, and, at the same time, impossible, under any circumstances, to get the foot fast in the stirrup. The foot may be changed from toe to instep to relieve thereby one set of muscles, and throw the strain on another set, which diminishes the fatigue and adds to the comfort and pleasure of riding. As the foot cannot be caught by the stirrup, the danger of accident occurring from this cause is thereby entirely avoided.
rlhe stirrup A is strengthened by a central stifening-rib, C, of suitable thickness, that extends along the under side of the foot-support to the shank. The rib may also be obtained by a central corrugaton when the stirrup is made of stamped metal. The upper end oi' the shank is iianged at both sides, the flanges D carrying a bar and tongue, E, to which the single or double strrup-strap is attached.
The stirrup is bent into such shape that the point of' support is thrown vertically above' the middle of the foot, so that an easy rest for the foot is obtained thereby.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A stirrup open at top and side, and provided with a bar and tongue, pivoted to the side flanges at upper end to receive the supporting-strap, substantially as specified.
