At the bolster, `the lower web 2is extended upwardlyand outwardly to form Side bearings 11 and the upper web 3 is extended laterallyto form thetopwall 1210i a boxshaped bolster structure and terminates in lanlupwardly inclined flange 13 to which the this portion of the bolster is reenforced by additional vertical webs which may be arranged as shown in Figure 1 or in any other desired form.
Intermediate the bolsters the lower web 2 is extended outwardly, as indicated at 1G (Figure 3), to form a br cket for mounting a brake cylinder or other similar apparatus and a horizontally extending llange 17, terminating in a pad 18, is provided above bracketl for mounting the tank sheets 10 and :for providing access t-o the attaching bolts passing through bracket 16.
In Figure 11, I illustrate the manner in which reen'forcing braces 19 may be applied to the underrame and to the tank sheets and it will be understoodthat where these braces are to be attached to the underframe, the latter will be provided with suitable pads which may be machined in order to 'form a. bearing. Splash sheets 2O may be secured to braces 19 in the usual manner..
The longitudinal sill elements 1, and other vertical walls in the underframe, are perforated, where necessary, as indicatedat 21, to provide for free passage of water from one part of the tank structure to the other.
The end sheets of the tank may be riveted or welded to suitable pads,..as indicated at 22 at the left hand end of Figure 2, or these sheets may be attached to thepad by means of connecting angles 23, as indicated at the right hand end or' Figure 2.
The construction shown provides a continuous horizontally disposed flange extending throughout the length of the underframe and adapted to mount the tank superstructure sheets, and where the frame necessarily includes transversely extending portions, asat the bolsters el, brake cylinder brackets 1G, and end sills 5, the flange is extended transversely o the Yiframe along the arc of the tank wall. The ilange on the inner end sill wall is indicated at Ll() (see Figure 7'). This flange avoids the provision of recesses in the tank sheets to permit them to receive the laterally projecting members and avoids the provision of additional connection members between the edges of recesses in the tank sheets and such members which would be a more diilicult and expensive construction. Y
The structure illustrated makes possible the use of a light underframe because the under-trame forms a part of the tank and does not have to carry a complete tank superstructure and the tank side sheets extend into the center sill members instead of the undertrame extending out to the sides oi' the tank.
The center of O'ravit of the entire structure is lower than 1n those tenders where a complete tank is carried on the underrame and Yis even lower than in the above mentioned plates are secured to the upper portion of the underframe.
The advantages of the construction described above are retained in the modilications of my invention which show various arrangements for securing similar results, for instance, in that illustrated in Figures 12 and 12a, the bolster bottom web 24 terminates adjacent to the side bearing l1 and there'provided with an inclined l'lange 25 for mounting the tank sheet 26, the outer portions .of the upper web 27 and the lower web 24 being connected by a suitable web 23. Similarly, the air cylinder bracket 29 is provided with an upstanding web 30 and an inclined flange 31 to which the superstructurel sheet may be attached.
In the construction shown in Figures 13 to 17, inclusive, the tank superstructure plates 32 are attached to the flange 33 of the underrame between the holsters 34 only and between the holsters and the end sills the tank sheets are fastened to the top of the underframe casting, either directly or by means ot connecting angles. 1n order to accommodate this construction, vertical plates 35 and suitable connecting angles 36 are utilized Where necessary.
In the construction shown in Figures 18 to 22, inclusive, a member having a sheet attaching flange 37 is provided bet-ween the level of the upper and lower portions of the center sill 38 and this member extends in a straight line between the end sills and is spaced from the center sill. This construction eliminates the curved flanges on the sides of the bolsters and other laterally extending members as required in the preferred construction and also avoids any shaping of the longitudinally extending superstucture sheets el the tank. The tank end sheets may be secured to suitable pads 39 and may be recessed along their lower edges to follow the contour indicated in Figure 22.
The box section center sill which I have illustrated in my drawings and the one piece casting structure are not essential to the embodiment of my invention, as spaced center sills of channel shape or I beam cross section may be utilized and connected, either by integral webs, if a casting is used, or by suitable plates welded or riveted to the sill elements.
These and other variations in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, and contemplate the exclusive use of all such modifications as come within the scope of my claims.
I claim:1
1. A. railway vehicle longitudinal sill member extending from end to end of the vehicle and having a lateral flange spaced below the top thereof and curved upwardly to mount a cylindrical tank superstructure sheet.
2. Ai railway vehicle sill member extending from end to end of the vehicle` having an outwardly and upwardly curved flange near' its lower portion and adapted to mount a tank superstructure sheet. i
3. A railway vehicle hollow boX shape longitudinal sill member having means spaced below the top thereoffor mounting the lower edge of a tank superstructure sheet.
4. A railway vehicle underframe longitudi nal sill of four sided box-shaped cross section and adapted to'mount the lower edges of tank superstructufeV sheets below its top and adapted to -contain liquid substantially throughout Vits width and depth. v
5. A railway vehicle four sided box-shaped longitudinal sill member having kmeans spaced" below the top thereof for mounting the lower edge of a tank superstructure sheet.
6. In a` railway tank vehicle. a longitudinalsill of four sided boX-shaped cross section and adapted to mount the lower edges of tank superstructure sheets at the lowerrportions of its sides so as to position'said sill substantially wholly Aabove the tank bottom and toY form a liquid chamber between the sidewalls of said sill and above saidlower edges.
7. In a railway vehicle, a box-shaped longitudinal sill with an imperfora-te bottom wall and with outwardly extending flanges at its lower sides, and sheets forming the lower portion of a cylindrical tank and having their lower edges secured to said flanges.
8. In a railway vehicle underframe, spaced longitudinal sill members, a Vweb between the lower portions of said members forming therewith a liquid container, and elements on said members, spaced from the top thereof, for mounting tank superstructure sheets.
9. In a railway vehicle underframe, spaced longitudinal sill elements and a web between the lower portions of said elements, said elements and web forming a receptacle adaptedV to contain liquids, and means on the lower eX* terior portion of said receptacle for mounting tank superstructure sheets. 20. ln a railway Vehicle, an undertrame cast-ing having` a box section longitudinal sill, sheets forming a cylindrical tank and connected direct-ly to the lower por Jion of sill, and tank braces extending to the lower portion of said sill and connected to said sill and to said sheets.

23. In a railway tank vehicle, underframe including a longitudinal sill and a laterally extending air brake cylinder bracket, and superstructure tank sheets secured to said bracket.

25. ln a railway tank vehicle, end sills, a cylindrical tank and a longitudinal sill member, both extending between said end sills, the' lower portion of which sill member is adapted to support the lower edges of the tank sheets so as to position said member substantially wholly above the bottom ot the tank.

In a railway vehicle undertrame, spaced longitudinal sill members extending throughout the length of the underfraine, a horizontal web between said members spaced below the top of the same and forming therewith a liquid container, and elements on said members, spaced below the top thereof, for mounting tank superstructure sheets.
3l. In a railway vehicle underirame, spaced longitudinal sill elements and a web between the lower portions of said elements, said elements and web forming a receptacle adapted to contain liquid, and means on the lower exterior portion of said receptacle tor mounting tank superstructure sheets.
.32. In a railway Vehicle, end sills, a cylindrical tank superstructure extending substantially from end sill to end sill, and a centrally located longitudinal sill extending between said end sills, the lower portion of said tank superstructure being secured directly to said longitudinal sill.
