"PETERS, PHoTu-LITHOGRAPHER. wAsmNGTDN n c UNITED STATES PATENT GEEIoE.
GUSTAV WINTER, OF DENVER, COLORADO TERRITORY.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,615, dated October 24, 1876; application filed July 1, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L GUsTAv WINTER, of Denver, Arapahoe county, Territory of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Door-Lock, of which the following is a specitiation:
Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved door-lock, with inclosing side plate detached. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on line c c, Fig. l; Fig. 3, an
end view oi' the lock, showing face-plate and bolts; and Fig. 4 is a detail View of the keyhole guard-plate.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved safetylock for hotels, private houses, and other purposes, which prevents, by a cheap and simple construction, the opening ot' the lock from the outside and the forcing of anesthetics through the key-hole.
The invention consists of a door-lock with two or more bolts and tumblers, which are so arranged in connection with the key-hole guard-plates, pivoted to the casing of the lock and operated by the bolts and key, that the key-hole is closed at the side opposite to that from which the key is introduced.
In the drawing, A represents the casing of my improved door-lock, which is arranged with two or more bolts,B, and tumblers C, that are separated by a division-plate, D, so as to be operated independently of each other by the key F. The bolts, B, are connected by pins a with the slotted ends of key-hole guard plates E, that are pivoted to the casing A, and operated by the sliding bolts in such a manner that when the bolts are thrown forward the guard-plates of the same are swung over to close the key-hole, and when the bolts are thrown back the guard-plates are moved away from the key-hole. The heads 0f the bolts B run parallel, and are one above the other in the face-plate of the lock, filling up the recess ot' the same. The key-hole guardplate E swings between the bolt and the casing, the key being made without an end pin, but with a guard, b, that permits it to enter the required distance without touching the guard-plate and hindering its motion.
The bit of the key is only equal in Width to the thickness ot' one bolt and its tumbler, and when introduced operates the tumbler and bolt at the side opposite to that from which the key is inserted, the tumbler and bolt on the side ot' the key remaining in its position.
By lockiag, therefore, the door from the Outside, the inner lock and guard-plate are closed, while by locking the door from the inside the outer lock and guard-plate are closed.
The tampering with the lock from either side, and the introduction of chloroform or other stupifying anesthetics, are thus prevented, aud a safety lock of simple and reliable construction, especialty for hotel purposes, furnished.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination in case A of bolts B and tumblers C, separated by plate D, the bolts being connected by pins a with pivoted key hole guards E, and provided with parallel heads, one above another, in the face-plate, as shown and described.
