Description

Dec. s, 1931. H, ESTERO, 1,835,768
CIGAR LIGHTER Filed Jan.- 5l, 1930 vwentoz Patent-ed Dec. 8, 1931 irs STATES HARRY ESTEROW, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GIGAR LIGHTER Application med January 31, 1930; 'sei-in No. 424,832.
This invention relates to an improvement in the type of cigar lighter disclosed in my Patent No. 1,737,964 dated December 3, 1929. In the type of lighter there disclosed, I com# f bine a watch with a lighter. The watch is wholly carried and supported Aby a hinged door which overlies one of the-faces of the fuel chamber of the lighter. YThis present invention'relates to a means for assembling the various elements which malte up the watch-holding means. n y
The primary object of this invention is to provide a simple, sturdy and effective', means for attachinga watch toa door, alateor other 15. similar part of a `cigar lighter without the use of solder or other similar- 'eXpensive ,as sembly means. I secure this result through a utilization ofvparts tobe fully described hereafter and more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.. f.
Reference to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof in which..k
Figure 1-is a front elevationy vof .acigar lighter made in accordance Vwith my invention; Q f
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the watch crystahsupporting bezel before the same is placed in position on the door of the lighter; Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view of case is held thereon;
Figure 4 is a view of the rear face of the door disclosing the means for engaging and holding the watch movement case; and
Figure 5 is a view partly in section of the several parts, which united comprise the watch supporting means. i
Throughout the various views of the drawings, similar reference characters designate similar parts.
In the embodiment of my invention disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates the body or fuel chamber of a cigar lighter. The same is usually tubular in form and has `its opposite ends closed by plates 2 and 3. The lower plate 3 is provided with a filling opening that is normally closed by a threaded plug 4. The upper plate 2 supports on its top face the lighter operating the door showing how the' Watch movement mechanism of conventional form, consisting ofa flint tube` 5, thumb wheel 6, adjusting screw8Y and a wick guard 7 that'is pivotally mounted on a standard 9. y
As these operating parts form no particuL lar part ofthe present invention, it is unnecessary to give further details of the same. At l()Y is shown ay doorsecured loverone face of the fuel chamber 1.1 This door is preferablyl` movable and topermit such movement, it may be hinged at its side e'dge 11 by invisible hinges not shown. This door may,of course, be movably secured in any otherway to the'f fuel chamber 1. The fuel chamber 1 is usually provided inarticles of thischaracter ywith av depression in one of its side walls, into which a watch lmovement projecting from the back face of the door 10 may protrude when the door is in its closed position; i `Since the structure thusfar described is fully shown in my Patent No. 1,737,964, further details of the same are deemed unneces.
sary. i l .The door 10 lis provided withan aperture 12` and this yaperture receives a bezel'1-3`. The bezel 13 is of a shape. to snugly fit' within the aperture 12. Said bezel is providedwitha surrounding flange 14 which, when'the bezel is fitted .within the aperture-12, llies against the front face of the door 1'() and surrounds the aperture 12..y The bezel is also provided with tongues 15',.one of these tongues being provided on eachy of the vfour sides of the bezel. Thus, when the bezel is fitted in theV aperture 12,r the tongues protrude through said aperture and extendv beyond the back face of the ydoor 10.` p l At 18 isdisclosed a cupilike frame which is provided with a peripheral enclosing lwall or flange 19 and an inturned or inwardly projecting flange 20.1'. The member 18 is thus provided with an aperture 21 corresponding in'size, or slightly larger than 'the aperture 12 in the door 10. The member 18 is vplaced flatvagainsn the back face of the door 10 with its vopening 21 in registration with the aperture 12 in said I door. f Thereupon, the tonguesl 'are bent over the flange 20 .on the member 18 as clearly disclosed in Figure 4,
Fromthe foregoing,
. Will be apparent.
so that as a result, the door 10, bezel 18 and member 18 are securely united.
The bezel 13 is provided With corner flanges 1G Which project inwardly and are located between the tongues 15 and the outer' flange 141, these flanges 16 acting as a seat for Watch crystal 17 which is frictionally held by the bezel against saidseat.
F rom the description thus far given, it Will be seen that the plate-like door 10 is provided With a crystal-holding bezel and that said bezel, through the medium of its bent-over tongues 15, securely holds a cuplilre retaining member 18 on the back of thc door. l
The Watch movement case is disclosed at 22 Aand thesame vconsists of a pair of telescoped members 23 and 24'Which snugly fit together and are frictionally held in such relationship. vThis rcase 22 holds a Watch movement of conventional form, Which is not shown, the member 24 of such case being provided with a front opening85, through which the dial ot the Watch movement is visible. The case'22 Wth a contained Watch movement fits Within the cup-like frame 18 and is held in snap engagement therewith by means of inter-engaging projections 25 and tively.
The flange 19 of the member 18 is preferablyv provided With a recess 3G through Which a Winding stem on the Watch movement may-protrude. This Winding stem is provided with the usual head 29 that is eX- posed through an openingv 28 provided in the door 10.
`26 provided on the parts 22 and 18 respecthe simplicity and ease of assembly of my improved structure The bezel 13 and member 18 are securely held in position With respectto the door 10 by means of the bentover flanges A15. The Watch movement casing 22 fmay be readily snapped in and out of the member 18' for instant removal or inspection of the -Watch movement. The various openings 12, 19 and v35 in the parts 10, 18 and 22 permitthe dial of the Watch to -be visible through the Watch crystal 17 at all times.
` Thus, through the construction described, I provide a sturdy, permanent structure which may be inexpensively assembled.
T-Iavingv described my invention, What l claim is:
-1. ln a cigar lighter, a lplate having an opening, a crystal-receivingbezel adapted to fit therein, said bezel having' tongues extending through the opening in the plate and bent over at the back of the plate to secure the bezel imposition, and means maintained on the back of the plate by said tongues for engaging 'and holding a Watch-movement case. I
2. In a cigar lighter, a door, said door having an opening, a crystal-receiving bezel adapted to t therein, said bezel having an outer flangeadapted to rest against the outer face of the door around the opening therein,
' the back of the plate for maintaining said bezel in the opening, a frame engaged at the back of the plate by said tongues and Vheld against said' plate, and aivatch movement case detachably held by said frame.
4. In a cigar lighter, a plate-having an opening, a crystal-receiving bezel adapted to fit therein, aframe having an inturned flange heldagainst the back of the plate, tongues on the bezel extending through the opening in the plate and bent outwardly and overthe inturned flange on the frame for maintaining said frame and bezel in position on'the plate. Y v y 5. In a cigarlighter, an apertured cover mounted on the lighter and adapted to carry a Watch movement, a case for said movement, means iixed to the back of the cover for detachably Aengaging with the Watch movement case, said means comprising a flanged frame and a bezel'on the front of the cover, said bezel having tongues extending through the aperture-in the cover and bent over the flange on the frame.
Signed at the city, county and State of New York, this 29 dayof January, 1930.
