Description

Dec. 1, 1931. CLAPP 1,834,599
PORTABLE COMPRESSOR MECHANISM Filed Nov. 20, 1929 Patented Dec. 1, 1931 PATENT OFFICE I UNITED STATES] LEWIS J. CLAPI, CLAREMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR. T SULLIVAN MA.- CHINERY A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS gonrnnn comransson mncnamsu Application filed November 20, 1929. Serial No. 408,626.
My invention relates to an improved port able compressor mechanism, and more particularly to an improved accessory which is used in connection with the driving means for the compressor.
One object of my invention is to provide improved portable compressor mechanism. A further object of my invention is to provide improved means for warming up the wa- 1o) ter or other cooling medium used in connection with the driving means for compressor mechanism. A further and more specific object of my invention is to provide heat exchange means which may be used in connec- 15, tion with the starting unit for a driving engine for heating up a fluid which is normally used in cooling said driving means. Further objects of my invention will become apparent in the course of the ensuing description, and pointed out in the accompanying claims.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawings an illustrative embodiment of my invention; and in these drawings,
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of a portable compressor mechanism in which a compressor is driven by a Diesel engine, and
in which the cooling fluid for the Diesel engine may be heated up by a coil connected with the starting unit for the Diesel engine. Fig. 2 is a detailed view, partially in side elevation and partially in section, showing the connections between the heating coil and adjacent portions ofthe conduits for circulating the cooling medium for the compressor mechanism.
In this illustrative embodiment ofmy invention there is disclosed a frame 5 mounted on wheels 6, and supporting a Diesel engine 16 and a compressor mechanism 9 driven thereby. A receiver tank 7 and a fuel tank 8 are carried at the rear end of the frame 5. The compressor mechanism 9 is connected to the receiver tank 7, so as to deliver compressed fluid thereto through piping 10. The compressor mechanism 9 is provided with cooling jackets to which cooling fluid is delivered through a pipe 11, and from which this fluid is led away through a pipe 12. A
radiator 13 is supported at the front endof the frame 5; and a horizontal pipe 14 runs longitudinally of the portable compressor so as to conduct the cooling fluid from the compressor mechanism 9 to the jackets of the Die.-
sel engine, whence it is delivered to the radi- I ator 13. A pump 15 forces the fluid from the pipe 14 into the jackets of the compressor and the Diesel engine, the pump being driven whenever the Diesel engine 16 is running.
The Diesel engine 16 is customarily started by means of a small gasoline engine 17, which is not provided with cooling jackets; and, therefore, delivers its exhaust gases at a high temperature. Instead of exhausting these hot gases directly to the atmosphere, a coil 18 is connected to the exhaust of the unit 17 by a pipe 19. A vent 20, which opens to the atmosphere, is connected to the end of the coil 18. The coil 18 is enclosed within a casing 21, so that cooling fluid may surround the same. The piping .11 includes a T 22, so as to provide a connection for branch piping 23 connected to a threaded opening in the lower portion of the casing 21. A globe valve 24 is provided for controlling the flow of fluid through the branch connection 23. A pipe 25 is threaded into the top of the casing 21, so as to connect the same with the longitudinally extending pipe 14. A globe valve 26 is provided in the piping 11, so as to control flow of fluid into thecooling jackets of the compressor mechanism 9. Clutch mechanism (not shown) is provided in the driving connections 27 between the Dlesel engine and the compressor mechanism.
The operation of this embodiment of my invention is as follows: When the Diesel engine is to be started, the clutch mechamsm is operated to disconnect the compressor mechanism 9 from'the Diesel engine 16. The starting unit 17 is then set in motion, the exhaust gases passing through the pipe 19 and heating coil 18 to the atmosphere by way of vent 20. The valve 26 is closed and the valve 24 is opened. The hot exhaust gases from the starting unit 17 heat the fluid surroundin the coil 18; and a circulation of fluid is initiated, the same passing through T '22 and piping 23 into the cas ng21, and from the casing 21 through plpes 25 and 14, to the Diesel engine, so as to cause Warm fluid to flow into the jackets of the Diesel engine. When enough warm fluid has passed into these jackets, the starting unit 17 is connected in the customary manner to the Diesel engine 16, and the latter is started.
The lobe valve 26 is then opened for normal .circu ation of fluid through the cooling j ackets of the campressor mechanism 9. The globe valve 24 may then be turned so as to throttle down or completely close ofl the circulation of fluid through the branch improved combination of parts I have provided an arrangement for expeditiously starting a Diesel engine, even in cold weather. This arrangement does not interfere with the normal operation of the compressor mechanism; and is a compact arrangement so as not to require extra space in the portable out-fit disclosed herein.
While I have in this application specifically described one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and'embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
