My invention relates to improvements in molds.
The object "of my invention is to providea mold and chill for moldinghollow'or solid 7, 5 castings having depressions therein provided with means for supporting'the hot chills so thatthey do not come in contact with the green sand, whereby the pattern is not injured by the formation of steam and the accumulation of moisture on the casting is also prevented. Another object of'my' invention is to provide an improved chillmade in sections and so supported that it can expand and'contract under the intense heatto which it is subjected, andyet will not materially affectthe contour of the depressionformed in the cast} 11g. a v o I Arfurther object of my invention is to pro vide a mold of this character in which the drag and cope are, in their usual manner, as-

filled with green sand 23, and has the pattern 24: formed therein to correspondwith the shape of the upper outer face of the cylinder head. The usual gate 25 is employed for pouring the molten metal to the castingand the riser 26 arranged at the opposite end to allow any gases and foreign matter in the mold to pass upwardly therein, whereby a more perfect casting is produced, all of which is well understood and needs no further description. The drag 1 and cope 22 are secured together by means of bolts 28v of the usual form passing through the ears27 and 27 carried by the cope anddrag. In casting acylinder head of the type shown in Figure 1 of the drawings it will be noted that before the parts are assembled as shown in Figure 1 the chills are heated to a very high degree, and as the molten metal is poured through the gate 25 it fills themold, and coming in contact with the highly heatedchills, the chillsare still further heated and the heat will expand the metal thereof, causing the obliquely engaging faces to slightly ride one upon the other against the tension of the spring 20, and thus slightlyincrease the size, but not to any material noticeable degree. After themetal has solidified, the cope is removed and by this timethe chills have slightly cooled so that the springs 20 will draw the sections 5, 6' and 7 back to the position shown in Figures 4,5 and 6 in the drawings, away from the casting, whereby the casting is readily removed, leaving the chills in the position for another molding operation. The, baked sandcore 21 is-then removed from the mold in the usual manner and a cylinder head is produced having the four compression chambers 27, 28, '29 and 30. The projections 22 of the baked sand core are'in the four openings 31,32, 33 and 34-, which areadapted to communicate with Theprojection35 at the end of the casting is for the purpose of connecting the hose to the water circulating system of the engine.
, As heretofore stated, I have shown a mold for molding cylinder heads, but it will be understood that I do notcare to limit myself to the same, as thebroad invention is in supporting the hot chills on the cup shaped members so that they do not engage the green sand of the drag, and thus prevent the formation of any steam or moisture on the casting. Having thus fully described my invention what I claim is 1. A mold comprising a drag, hollow chill supporting members in said drag, and chills resting upon the upper ends of the chill supporting members.
2. A mold comprising a drag, hollow chill supporting members in said drag, and chills of the same contour as the upper ends of the supporting members and resting thereon.
8. A mold comprising a drag, hollow chill supporting members in said drag, and having. their upper ends flush with the upper edge of the drag, and chills resting upon ItJlie upper ends of the chill supporting memers.
4. A mold comprising a drag, hollow chill supporting members in said drag and having their upper ends in a plane with the upper edge of the drag, and the space between the chill. supporting members filled with sand, and chills resting upon the upper ends of the chill supporting members.
5-. A mold comprising a, drag, hollow chi-ll supporting members in said drag; and ex pansible chills resting upon the upper ends of the chill supporting members.
6. A mold comprising a drag, hollow chill supporting members in said drag and having their upper ends in a plane with the up per edge of the drag, and the space between the members filled with green sand, and expansible chills resting upon the upper edge of the chill supportingmembers.
7. A mold comprising a drag, hollow chi-ll supporting members in said drag, and expansible chills of the same contour as the upper endsof the chill supporting members and resting thereon.

13. A mold comprising a drag, hollow chill supporting members in said drag and having their upper ends flush with the upper edge of the drag and chills of the same contour as the upper ends of the supporting members and resting thereon.
14. A mold comprising a drag, chill supporting members in said drag, spaces be tween the chill supporting members filled with green sand, chills supported by the upper ends of the chill supporting members and of the same contour as the upper ends of the supporting members, a packed sand core resting upon the green sand and a cope resting upon the drag having a mold cavity surrounding the packed sand core.
