Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. 4
JOSHUA H. MARVIL, OF LAUREL, DELAWARE.
IMPROVEMENTIN FRUIT-BASKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,407, dated October 17, 1876-; application filed January 9, 1875.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA H. MARvIL, of Laurel, in the county of Sussex and State of Delaware,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit or Berry Baskets, of which the following is a specification:
gether, as will more fully hereinafter appear.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a view of the basket in process of construction, showing the strips properly secured together previous to bending. Fig. 2 represents aperspective view of the improved box or basket constructed according, to my invention.
The letters A A represent a series of strips or splints of wood, metal, or other suitable material. Said strips are formed with one edge straight, and the other curved, or extending outward at an angle from the point of bending to the ends, as represented at a; or they may be formed with both edges curved,
' similarly constructed. The portions of the strips forming the bottom of the box are secured to each other at right angles by means of tacks, nails, or otherwise, as shown at b, said nails being inserted midway between the edges of the strips, or as near such a point asconvenient, to prevent liability to splitting. At the point of bending the strips are scored or cut, on the outside or inside, as usual, to
facilitate the bending. The ends are bent up at an acute angle in the ordinary manner, and united by means ot' the strips B B at the top of the box.
It will be evident that the enlarged ends of the sides of the strips or splints, so that the box may be adapted to any variety of fruit, however small, without twisting or bending its sides, or subjecting the tacks or other portions to any strain whatever.
A box of superior beauty can also be formed, as is evident, the appearance and finish of which will readily strike the observer, and a more marketable article than the box in common use will be obtained, possessing all the advantages of the ordinary box, and none of its defects. I
Having thus described I claim is A basket constructed of two pairs of parallel independent splints, one pair being secured to the other at right angles to the same, the intersecting portions forming the bottom with suitable interstices for ventilation, the ends beyond said intersecting parts being provided with an offset on their outeredges, for the purpose of partially filling u'p-the corners of the box when bent upward and bound together, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seaL' JOSHUA H. MARVIL. [L.S.]
my invention, What
