WOOD SAWING MACHINE AND POWER TAKE-OFF DEVICE Filed May 15, 1928 Snnentor WiLMn/Ifiez/erance,
Qt megs Patented Nov. 17, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM N. SEVERANCE, OF DALEVILLE, MISSISSIPPI, ASSIGNOE OF FIVE-EIGHTHS TO JOHN S. WARREN, 01 SUN, MISSISSIPPI WOOD SAWING MACHINE AND IOWER TAKE OFF DEVICE Application filed. May 15, 1928. Serial No. 277,881.
My invention relates to an improved wood sheller, grinding mill, pump, lathe or the sawing machine of the circular saw type and like, irrespective of whether or not such drive also to an improved form of device adapted shaft is axially alined with the wheel of the to take ofi power from a drive wheel of a motor vehicle. Said adjustable means is 5 motor vehicle and transmit it to my saw or inclusive of a spider member 84: and cap to other machines. member 86, while said shaft, 88, is inclusive With the foregoing and other purposes in of a pair of universal joints'90, 90 at the ends view, my invention consists in the novel feathereof, one of which is connected with the tures of construction, combination and arcap member 86 and the other of which is 1 rangement of parts as will be hereinafter adapted for connection with the shaft to be 0 more fully described, illustrated in the acdriven, snclntor example, as shaft 18 of my companying drawings and defined in the wood sawing machine. appended claims. The spider member 8 1 consists of a ring In the drawings, whereinlike characters of 92 provided with a circular series of bolt rereference denote corresponding parts in th ceiving apertures 94: and having radiating diilerent views therefrom a plurality or". arms 96 each pr0- Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a wood sawing vided with a longitudinal slot 98. while the machine, the same being connected in driV- cap member 86 which is of size to fit over the ing relation to a wheel of a motor vehi l hub cap of a vehicle wheel, is closed at its by means of my improved power take-oil; outer end and there suitably formed for con- Fig. 2, an end view of Fig. 1; and nection with one of the universal joints 90, Fig. 3 a perspective View of my improve and at its inner open end is provided with power take-off. an outwardly directed flange 100 correspond- Referring now to the drawings in de ing in size to and apertui'ed as at 102 the 25 it will be observed that my improved saW- sameas the ring 92 of the spider member 84, iIlg IIIELClllIlE lllClllClGS essentially 21 lllillIl whereby aid spider me nbey and said cap frame A composed of a. pair of base members are d t d f d t h bl connection with 10, 10, connected together in parallel, spaced one another by bolts pasged throurrh alined relation by two or more transverse members apertures 9%102 i di t d i Fig, 1 f

A swinging work supao'aingt ith th j or th ut faces port indicated generally at 13 serves to move f th i l t d id arms 96 d b lt material to and from the S 112 are passed through the slots 98 106 in My improved power take off device asilsaid arms and members, respectively, to selustrated in detail in Figs- 1, n 3 0f the cure them together in any relatively adiust d 'awings consists essentially of adjustable d o iti itt d b id n, th T- means for connection with mot r v hicl shaped 'formationsllo at the inner ends of wheels of different sizes and constructions th xtension members being adapted for and a shaft COnneCted with said adjustablecooperation with the faces of the arms 96 means for transmitting rotary movement oppositeto the faces against which the memof the latter to the drive shaft- 18 of my saw-f hers 104 are positioned; either by being passed ing machine or to the drive shaft of any other tl'irough the slots 98 in the spider arms or by machine, such as a cream separator, corn being engaged over marginal edge portions of said arms, as indicated in Fig. 3 to assist the bolts 112 in maintaining said extension members rigidly connected with their related arms in any adjusted position of said members with respect to said arms, it being noted in this respect that not only may the effective length of the spider arms constituted by the arms themselves and the extension members 10 be increased or lessened, but that the distance between the aperture 108 in any given arm and the aperture 108 in any adjacent arm may also be increased or lessened as desired whereby the apertures in all ot the meribers 10% may be brought into alinement with the usual rim lu retaining bolts of vehicle wheels different sizes.
In the use oi my power take o'li device the vehicle with which it is to be connected is first jacked up or otherwise elevated sufficiently to the wheel thereof from which pow-er is to be derived out of engagement with the ground either the jack or other means employed for raising the vehicle, or any suitable support such as is indicated at 11 1 in Fig. 1, being employed to maintain said wheel in an elevated position. The e);- tension members 104, if not previously adjusted. then are adjusted relatively to their related spider arms. so that the apertures 106 therein will alinc with the lug bolts of the wheel. provided. of course. the wheel is of a type including lug bolts. The usual lug bolts nuts then are removed and said extension members enn'apjed over said lug bolts and the nuts again applied to secure the spider to the wheel, the cap member 86 having previously been connected with the spider ring 92 by means of bolts passed through alined apertures 94102 in said ring and the cap flange as is understood. The shaft 88 then is connected with the shaft 18 or other shaft to be operated thereby, whereupon rotation of the vehicle wheel will impart rotation to said shaft irrespective of whether said wheel and shaft are or are not axially alined as is obvious.
In some instances it may be possible to disconnect the cap member 86 from the spider member and connect the cap member directly with a vehicle wheel by bolts passed through the apertures 102 in the flange 100 of said cap member.
Furthermore, if desired, a pulley (not shown) may be mounted on the cap member 86 to establish a belt drive between a vehicle wheel and any desired article of machinery.
I claim 1.. A power take oil device for connecting an article of machinery with a drive wheel of a motor vehicle comprising a spider member, said spider member consisting of an apertured rinn', slotted arms radiating there from, a slotted arm extension member positioned against one face of each arm, a bolt connectin each arm with its related extension mem er, a T-shaped formation on the inner end of each extension member engageable with its related arm to assist said bolts in securing said extension members to their related arms, said extension members being apertured to receive bolts carried by the wheel from which power is to be derived, and means for establishing a driving connection between said spider member and a device to be driven by said wheel.
2. A power take off device for connecting an article of machinery with a drive wheel of a motor vehicle comprising a spider memher and a cap, said spider member including an apertured lin means for securing said ring to a wheel or a motor vehicle, a flange on said cap member having apertures adapted for alinement with the apertures in said ring, bolts adapted to be passed through said apertures to detachably connect said spider member and cap together, said cap when detached from said spider member being" adapted to have wheel carried bolts passed through the apertures on the flange thereof to connect said cap directly with a wheel, and a shaft having a ui'iiversal joint at each end thereof, one of which is connected with said cap and the other of which is adapted for connection with a shaft to be driven from a wheel with which said cap is connected.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atlix my signature.
