Description

Patented Nov. 17, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HOWARD '1. HALLO'WELL ANT) FRANK BENNETT, OF JENKINTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNORS TO STANDARD PRESSEID STEEL 00., OF JENKINTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA, A
CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA PLATFORM Application filed October 16, 1929. SerlaLNo. 400,034.
Our invention relates to certain improvements in platforms for supporting merchandise in factories and warehouses.
The object of our invention is to make a substantial platform of sheet metal, which will resist the strains and rough usage to which a platform of this type is subjected, the parts of the platform being made of sheet metal bent into shape and welded together.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of our improved platform;
Fig. 2 is a side view;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3, Fig. 1;
Fig. 4. is an enlarged sectional view on the line M, Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5, Fig. 1.
Referrin to the drawings, 1 is the body of the platform. 2 is a sheet. metal floor of the platform, flanged at each end as at 3. The flanges are turned inwardly as at 4 to form a channel edge, which materially strengthens the platform. 5 are flanged channel beams which extend longitudinally of the platform and are secured to the floor plate by welding. These beams extend into the channels at the ends of the platform, as shown in Fig. 5, and thus strengthen the ends of the platform which are subjected to severe shocks and strains when a carrying-truck is inserted under the platform.
Connecting the longitudinal channel members 5 are cross channel members 6, which rest on the flanges 7 of the channel members 5 and are secured thereto by welding, and these channels may also be secured to the floor plate 1. As an additional means of strengthing the ends of the platform, intermediate longitudinal channel members 8 are provided. These channel members rest on the flanges of the transverse channel members 6 and on the inturned flanges 4 of the floor plate.
The legs 9, which support the platform, may be of any length desired and are preferably U-shaped in form, as shown, and are of the same width as the inner portions of the channel members 5 so that the upper ends of the legs extend into the channel members and are welded thereto. This construction holds the upper ends of the legs rigidly. In some instances, particularly on large sized plat forms, a brace 10 may be used. This brace, as is clearly shown in Fig. 4, extends from the side of the platform to the lower portion 11 of each foot and is bent so as to rest upon the foot, and this portion is welded to the foot. The upper end is bent so as to form a pad 12, which can be welded to the inturned portion of the floor plate of the platform or may be welded to a reinforcing plate 13, which is welded to the inturned portion of the platform and to the channel member 5, as shown in Fig. 4:. These braces resist any side strains to which the platform is subjected.
While we have shown the members 6 and 8 as channel members, they may be in the form of Z-bars if desired. The ends of the platform are preferably reinforced by a plate 1 1, Fig. 5, which extends between the ends of the channel members 5 and the flange 3. These plates 14, while shown as flat bars, may be of other shapes without departing from the main feature of the invention.
A platform constructed in the manner shown and described is very substantial and will withstand the jars and pressures to which a platform of this type is subjected.
We claim:
1. The combination in a platform, of a body portion consisting of a floor plate flanged at each side and at each end; longitudinal channel members extending from one end of the platform to another under the plate; transverse beams extending from one channel member to the other on each side of the center of the platform; and U'shaped legs, the upper ends of which are the same width as the inner portions of the channel members, said upper ends of the legs being secured to the channel members by welding.
2. The combination in a platform, of a plate forming the floor of the platform flanged at each side and each end, the flanges being inturned at thelower edges to form reinforcing channels; flanged channel beams extending from one end of the platform to the other, the ends of the channel beams rest- 2 neaa'rra ing on the inturned portions of the flanges of the floor"i late fand secured therlelto liy Eveldin an e or an ortin t e at orm, sai d le be1 n welde d theret o. p 5 3. T e com ination in a platform, of a body portion consistin of a sheet metal plate formm the floor of t e latform, said plate being anged at each si e and at each end, said flanges being turned inwardly to form 30 reinforcing channel members two longitudinally flanged channel members extending from one end of the platform to the other and extending to the channels at the end of the platform; transverse beams extending 15 from one channel member to the other; in-
termediate longitudinal beams extending from each transverse beam to the end of the platform, the several beams being secured together and to the floor by welding; and legs as welded to the longitudinal channel members. 4. The combination in a platform, of a floor plate flanged at each side and at each end, saidfianges being inturned at the lower ends to form reinforcing channels; two lonea gitudinally flanged channel members extending from one end of the platform to the other and welded to the fioor late; U-shaped le S for supporting the plat orm, the upper ends of the legs extending into the channel memfia bers and welded thereto; and braces extending from the side edges of the platform to the lower portion of the legs;
5. The combination in a platform, of a floor plate flanged at each side and at each 35 end, said flanges being inturned at the lower ends to form reinforcing channels; two longitudinally flanged channel members extend- 111g from one end of the platform to the other and welded to the floor late; U-shaped legs an for supporting the platlorrn, the upper ends of the legs extending into the channel memhers and welded thereto; braces extending from the side edges of the platform to the lower portion of the legs; and reinforcing plates ocated between the members of the legs and extending from the sides of the platform to the flanged channel members, and secured to the flanged channel members and tothe inturned portions of the flange of the 50 floor plate b welding.
