Description

1931- .1. SPOLJARICH GOGGLES ATTACHMENT FOR HATS Filed June 1, 1931 Patented Nov. 17, 1931 UNITED STATES JOHN SPOLJ'ARICH, F PAIN ESDALE, MICHIGAN GOGGLES ATTACHMENT FOR HATS Application. filed June 1, 1931. Serial No. 541,514.
This invention relates to means for attaching goggles or eye protectors to hats, and has for its object to provide a construction which will hold the goggles securely in place on the brim of a hat when not in use, but will permit the ready adjustment of the goggles over the eyes of the wearer of the hat when desired. Many large mining companies require their miners to wear goggles wh en they are doing Work which endangers their eyes. Such work is intermittent, and
the putting on and taking ofl' of goggles, usually carried in the iiners pockets or attached to cords or tapes worn about their necks, is inconvenient and the goggles rule is therefore one which is difhcult to enforce.
The present invention makes it convenient for a miner to obey the goggles rule and at the same time keep the goggles clean and in a convenient place.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a bottom or inside view of a miners hat constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same on line 22, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail view to show an elastic strap attachment to a goggle member.
Referring to the drawings, 12 denotes the crown of a miners hat, which may be made of any suitable stiff material, and 13 denotes the brim of the hat. Attached to the underside or lower surface of the front part of the brim of the hat are two outer hooks or brackets 14 the supporting parts of which a} are spaced apart from the brim of the hat so as to be adapted to receive the ends of the goggle members 15 which will thus be securely held in place when the goggles are mounted on the said brim, and 14L is a third in central hook or bracket member constructed to receive the bridge, herein shown as a strap 16, which connects the goggle members together. The goggle members are, as herein shown, formed of wire mesh, but may be of any other suitable material or construction. Attached to the outer ends of the goggle members 15 are elastic members herein shown as textile straps 17 the rear ends of which are preferably provided with hooks 18 adapted to engage any one of a series of spacedapartholes 19 in the brim of the hat. It will thus be apparent that the elastic members 17 will serve to hold the goggle members 15 in place in the hooks or brackets 14 when the goggles are not in use, but will permit the goggles to be drawn forward to be disengaged from the said hooks or brackets (which are open forwardly) and applied over the eyes of the wearer of the hat, when desired. The spaced-apart holes 19 permit variation of the tension of the elastic members .17 by adjustment of the hooks 18 in the said holes.
It will thus be understood that the invention provides a goggle attachment for hats by which the goggles may be securely held in place on the underside of the brim of the hat when not in use, but which will permit of the ready adjustment of the goggles over the eyes of the wearer of the hat when desired.
The invention is not to be understood as being limited to the details shown and described, as variations may be made, within the province of mechanical skill, without departing from the scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed. For example, metal springs might be used to connect the goggle members yieldingly with the brim or other part of the hat, instead of the elastic textile straps 17, and other means than the hooks 18 might be adopted to connect the rear ends of the elastic members with the hat.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A hat having a brim provided on its front under side with hooks or brackets which are open forwardly and are adapted to support goggles, combined with goggle members and elastic members attached to the outer ends of said goggle members, and means for connecting the rear ends of said elastic members with the hat.
2. A miners hat provided at the front underside of its brim with three hooks or brackets which are open forwardly, two of said hooks or brackets being located to receive the outer ends of the goggle members and the third being located to receive a bridge strap connecting the goggle members, combined with goggle members and elastic mem bers attached at their front ends to the outer parts of said goggle members and having their rear ends connected to the hat.
5 3. A goggle attachment for miners hats consisting of two outer hooks or brackets which are open forwardly and are attached to the front under side of the brim of the hat and constructed and located to support the 10 outer ends of the goggle members, and a third forwardly open central hook or bracket also attached to the front underside of the brim of the hat and adapted to receive the central bridge strap connecting the goggle mem- 15 bers together, combined with goggle members and elastic members attached to the outer ends of said goggle members and provided at their rear ends with hooks for engaging the hat brim.
29 i. A goggles attachment for miners hats consisting of two outer hooks or brackets which are open forwardly and are attached to the front underside of the brim of the hat and constructed and located to support the outer ends of the goggle members, a third forwardly open central hook or bracket also attached to the front underside of the brim of the hat and adapted to receive the central bridge strap connectingthe goggle members 30 together, combined with goggle members and elastic members attached to the outer ends of said goggle members and provided at their rear enns with hooks for engaging any of the spaced-apart holes with which the hat brim is provided.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
JOHN SPOLJARICH.
