UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE mm; 1:. norsrzm, or mouse, new YORK non consmuc'rion Application filed October 8, 1928. Serial No. 811,024.
This invention has for its object a particularly simple and efiicient construction of handles or knobs such as are used on radio sets to operate the dials, which is extremely simple and which greatly facilitates the quantity production of a high grade article at a tapping and breaching operations heretofore used in producing these articles and 'set screws used to attach them to their shanks.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions and method hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is bad to the accompanying drawmgs in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an enlarged side elevation, partly broken away, of a knob embodying my invention. I
Figures 2 and 3 are opposite end elevations thereof.
Figure 4 is an end elevation of the detached socket member.
. mentary elevation and end Figure 5 is a plan view of the detached key t d 7 1 f i res 6 an are respective y a raggu view of. the shank. These articles as knobs have a-wood body or a body made of wood fiber or an othernonmetallic material, a. metallic soc et member embedded in the body or snugly fitted in a central opening in the body, this member bein provided with a transverse key, that is, a ey extending diametrically thereof and a shank having an endfformed to fit the socket member and .provided with a ti'ans- Verse open ended slot for receiving the key.
1 designates abody in the form of an ornamental knob usnalli formedof wood on molded wood fiber an also formed with an axial pasage 2 therethrou h.
3 is a socket member t e form of a sleeve snii fitting in the passage 2 and also usu' y having means as a non-circular head embedded in the body of'the' knob. As here shown, the head is formedat one end of. the sleeve and is hexagonal in shape. The
grave is bifurcated at its end remote? from 4 and is bifurcated by sawmgmr bottoms out of oltherwise'forming a diametrically extending s 0t 6.
The transverse key consists merely of a short flat strip 7 with its ends in the slot 6,
preferably the end edges project beyond the periphery of the sleeve.
8 designates the shank which is usually a rod, this shank being formed with a transverse open ended slot 9 in one end, the slot 9 receiving the ke 1 7. y
The method of fbrming-the knobs consists in forcing the sleeve orsocket member with the key therein into the central opening 2 of the knob 1 and pressing the hexagonal head of the sleeve into the body around one end of the opening. The sleeve is of such length that the edge at the slotted end-comes flush with one end surface of the knob or body.
After thesleeve is assembled in the body, the end of the body on which the hexagonal head is exposed, is preferably covered by an ornamental button or disk 10.
The gonal ar stock in an automatic screw machine which turns the bar round with the exception of the hexagonal heads, cuts off the socket membersfro'm the bar. bores the the socket members and slots the same.
The keys are sheared off at the proper len th from a fiat strip of steel.
he spindles or shanks are made in an automatic machine from round rods, cutting off the spindles at the proper length marking ing operations to form a cast socket member which isfittedand screwed in the assage of the knob. Heretofore, in some cm of knobs, instead of using a set screw, internal lengthwise slots are broached into the wall of the boreof the sleeve for receiving the sides of. a wire loop hinged tothe end of the spindle or shank, the hmgmg requiring the gocket members are formed from hexaforming of a transverse hole or bore in the shank to receive inwardly bent ends or pivots of the wire loop.
By my invention, the expensive broaehing 5 operation and the expensive operation of attaching the loop to the shank are eliminated.
What I claim is:
The combination of a non-metallic body formed with a passage, a metal sleeve fitting in the pasage and formed with a transverse slot at one end, a transverse key in the slot and a shank havin one end fitting the bore of the sleeve and ormed with a transverse slot for receivin% the key, the key normally extending slight y beyond the periphery of the sleeve into the b0 y.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed m name, at S racuse, in the county of Onan aga, and in t e State of New York,
this 5th day of October, 1928.
