Description

2: 0. WILDER.
DIES FOR. FORMING onwmn LANDSIDE-BARS FOB. news. No. 183,091.
Patented Oct. 10, 1876.
Unrrnn STATES PATENT QFFICE.
CHARLES O. WILDER, OF MONMOUTH, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO WEIR PLOW COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN DIES FOR FORMING FORWARD LAND-SIDE BARS FOR PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,091, dated October 10, 1876; application filed September 12, 1876. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES O. WILDER,
of Monmouth, in the county of Warren and State of Illinois, have invented certain new V and useful Improvements in Dies for Forming 'Forward Land-Side Bars for Flows; and I do erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to improvements in dies for the manufacture of forward land-side bars for plowE-that end or part of land-side bars which, when welded to the ordinary plow-share, constitutes therewith the slip-share; and the invention consists, first, in constructing the bed-die in two parts, between and on which the forward land-side bar is forged, and so constructed and arranged that one of said two parts may be removed to release the finished bar, and for removal of scales, 860.; second, in the use of substitutive blocks in the recess in which the la ud-side is formed, which may be changed for making difl'erent-sized land-sides in the same dies; and the invention further consists in improvements in the construction and adaptation of the parts, hereinafter fully described, and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the fixed part of the bed'die. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bed-die with its removable part in place. Fig. 3 is the same view as Fig. 2, with two finished land-side bars in place therein. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the head-die, bottom-side upward. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of both dies, and land-side bars between them. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the removable part of the bed-die. Fig. 7 is a bottom view of Fig. 6. Fig.8 is a perspective view of a finished forward land-side bar, and Fig. 9 a similar view of the blank from which it is formed by the dies.
Referring to the parts by letters, letter A represents the part of the bed-die which is fixed permanently in any suitable drop-press, and contains a groove or recess, a, with slightly-inclined sides a. Each side a contains a recess, b, broad at one end, b, and narrow at the other, b. A is the removable part of the bed-die, its lower portion 0 formed to fit in the groove a of the part A, and has a transverse head, 0, across its lower surface, which may be seated in a corresponding groove, a, in the bottom of the groove a, for retaining the part A in proper position longitudinally in the groove a. The upper face of the part A is curved longitudinally, or slightly concave, to correspond with the desired upper curved side of the front land-side bar, and contains a recess, (1, in each side, broad at one end. and tapering to a point at its other, and the bottoms of which are in line with the adjacent lower sides of the recesses b. A is a handle, projecting from the part A. E is the head-die, containing a projection, e, which fits in the groove a of the die A, and is curved to correspond with the upper face of the part A. F represents removable blocks, seated in the broad end b of the recesses b, and are substitutive or replaceable with larger or smaller sizes. G is a finished forward land-side bar, and G is the blank plate of metal from which it is formed by placing the blank G in a recess, h, formed by a recess, b, and the adjacent side of the removable part A of the die A, and with the die E suitably mounted in the droppress, forging its narrow end g to the desired shape, and point g in a recess, (1. At the same time its upper surface and other portions are formed in the evident manner.
Blocks F, of different thickness, as shown by dotted lines at Fig. 1, may be used in making land-side bars of different sizes, for different sizes of plows.
The recesses b and coactiug recesses 01 are constructed to form a. land-side bar for a righthand plow on one side of the die, and for a left-hand plow on the other side.
When a bar, G, is formed in the dies, the part A may be removed by its handle A, to remove the bar G easily, and to clean or brush out scales and other debris from the recesses.
Having, thus described my invention, what I operate with the head-die E, substantially as I claim as new, and desire to secure by Leti t rs Patent, is-
1. In dies for forming forward land-side bars, constructing the bed-die in two parts, with adjacent recesses b and d, in which the land-side is forged, and from which it may be readily and easily removed by removal of the detached part of the die, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. In dies for forming forward land-side bars, constructing the bed-die in two partsa fixed part, A, and a removable part, Asubstantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
3. The die A A, constructed in two parts, having recesses b and d, and arranged to described, and for the purpose specified.
4. The removable die A, having a bead, a, combined with the fixed die A, having a recess, a, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
5. The substitutive blocks F, combined with recess h, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoiug'as my own I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES O. WILDER.
