This invention relates to door latches of the type commonly'used on automobiles.
An object of this invention is to provide a door latch which is sturdy in construction, and inexpensive to manufacture. k
Another object of this invention is to produce a door lock of the sliding bolt type'having a dogging member which-is slidable in a plane pa rallel to the bolt for preventing withdrawal of the bolt by manipulation of the outside retracting means.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In one aspect, this invention provides a sliding dogging member movable in a plane parallel to the movement of the sliding bolt for preventing manipulation of the outside retracting means. The dogging member may be actuated to dogging position by actuation of the inside retracting means in a direction opposite to that of retracting the bolt. It has been found that a sliding dogging member mounted in the above manner lends itself admirably to use in automobile doors because a compact construction is produced which occupies a minimum amount of space.
Furthermore, this construction may be cheaply manufactured in large quantities so that the unit may be sold at a price lower than any similar lock on the market, of which I am aware. 1

Formed in the lever 9 intermediate the ends is a vertically elongate .slot 11 into which a pin 12 projects. The pin 12 is carried by a horizontally disposed link' 13 which has a horizontal elongate slot 14: intermediate its ends. stud 15 which is fixed to thebolt 3 so that by swinging the lever 9 in a clockwise direction the outer end of the slot 14 will engage the stud 15, and retract the bolt 3 against the tension of the coil spring 6. j
In order to retract the bolt 3 from the outside of the automobile, a hub 16 is rotatably mounted on the back plate 1, and a shaft 17 projects into the squared opening 18 in the hub. By means of a handle secured to the outer end of the shaft 17. the hub may be rotated. Projecting from the hub 16 is the bolt 3, so thatby rotating the hub'in a. clockwise direction (Fig. 1) it will be seen that the bolt 3 may be retracted. This formof retracting means is usually'termed a roll back. v j I o In accordance with thepi'e'sent invention, a sliding dogging member or-pawl '21 is em ployed for movement to a position toprevent retraction of the bolt by the roll back. is disposed in a plane parallel to the plane of movement of the bolt 3. It will be observed that this dogging member is arranged in close relation to the bolt so that a compact arrangement is pro-' vided. As shown, this member is mounted for horizontal sliding movement and the rear portion of this member is guided between the upper lug 4 and a lug 22 projecting from the back plate 1.- The forward end portion may rest upon and be guided by the forward end portion of the bolt 3, although this arrangement is not always desirable. The forward end portion of the dogging member 21 is adapted to be extended into the path of movement of a lug 23 projecting from the hub 16. When the dogging member is moved todogging position, operation of the roll back is positively prevented.
Intermediate the ends of the dogging member 21 is formed a horizontal elongate slot 24 into which a guiding stud projects from the plate 1. It will thus be seen that movement of the dogging member 21 is guided by the lug 25, slot 24, lugs 4 and 22, and, un-
der some circumstances, the upper edge of the locking bolt 3. Formed in the lower portion of the dogging member 21 is a relatively short horizontal elongate slot 26 into which extends a pin 27 on the connecting link 13.
In the operation of the above described latch, when the lever arm 9 is rocked in a clockwisedirection (Fig. 1), the pin 27 first engages the inner end of the slot 26, and retracts the dogging member 21 from locking position; Further movement of the lever arm 9 brings the outer end of the elongate slot 14 into engagement with the stud 1'5, and thereafter the bolt 3 is retracted. By this arrangement movement of the lever arm 9 to the right first retracts the dogging member 21. and subsequent to this operation, the bolt- 3 is withdrawn.
To move the dogging member 21 to locking position so that operation of the outside retracting means is prevented,,the lever arm 9 is moved to the left in a counter clockwise direction (Fig. 1) to bring the pin 27 first into engagement with the outer end of the slot 26, and further movement serves to slide the dogging member 21 horizontally to the left into dogging position. It will thus be seen that slight movement of the lever arm 9 to the so that the bolt may be conveniently retracted without the operator assuming an uncomfortable position. The above described arrangement is also known as a pull type of latch in which a lever is employed for retracting the bolt. i
A further type of the remote control is cured to the opposite side of the plate 8.
In this construction it will be seen that by rotation of the shaft 31 in a counter clockwise direction, (Fig. 4) the bolt may be retracted, subsequent to the withdrawal of the dogging member from latching position.
Rotation of the shaft 31 in a clockwise direction moves the-dogging member to latching position. As the remainder of this construction is the same as that above described. further description will not be given.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 7 to 9, inclusive, the bolt 3 projects through a flange 2 on the back plate 1 as in the forms above described. The rear end portion of the bolt is guided by lugs 4 projecting outwardly from the back plate 1 and a coiled spring 6 serves to hold the bolt 3 projected. The bolt 3 is formed with a horizontal elongate slot 33 having an outwardly extending lug 34 at the inner end thereof. The inner part of the dogging member 35 is depressed to providea portion 36 which protrudes into the slot 33, and theend of this member is turned outwardly .to form an abutment 38 which is adapted to engage the projection 34.
Q For actuating the dogging member 35 and retracting the bolt 3 an arm 39 fixed to a shaft 40 extends upwardly and the outer portion lies over the depressed portion 36. Formed in the arm 39 is a longitudinally elongated slot 41 into which extends a pin on the dogging member \Vhen the arm 39 is moved to the left (Fig. 7) the dogging member is positively actuated into the path of movement of the lug 23 so that manipulation of the roll back is prevented. By rocking the arm 39 to the right the dogging member 35 is first withdrawn from latching position and thereafter the abutment 38 is moved into engagement with the lug 34 on the bolt so as to retract the bolt.

Figures 10 and 11 show a latch similar to that shown in Figs. 7 to 9. but instead of employing an arm 39, a lever arm 43 is provided for retracting the bolt and. actuating the dogging member to and from latching lfll position. In each of the described embodiments of the invention, there is shown a sliding pawl or dog which is movable in a plane parallel to'the plane of movement of the bolt. \Vhile I have described my construction in more or less detail to comply with the requirements of the statute, it is nevertheless desired that this detailed description be considered merely as illustrative, and not as limiting, and it is to be understood that changes and modifications may be made those skilled in,,this art without departing from the invention as defined in the following claims.

In a door latch, in combination with a springtensioned bolt, means operable from the outside of the door for retracting the bolt, means operable from the inside of the door for retracting the bolt, a link between the bolt and said inside retractin means, a lost motion connection between said link and bolt, a slidable dogging member for said outside retracting means, and a lost-motion connection between said dogging member and link whereby retracting movement of the insi de means first retractsthe dogging member and subsequently retracts the bolt.

In a, remote control latch, the combinadog for retracting the bolt and alside means-for retracting said bolt. inside 'sition through one end of its path and for tion of a latch unit including a tensioned bolt, an outside controlled roll back rotatable for retracting said bolt, a remote control unit for retracting said bolt including a reciprocating handle having. a normal position at an intermediate point in its path, and a connection between said handle and bolt, said connection comprising a link and a lost motion connection with said bolt enabling retraction of said bolt and full projection thereof in one end of the handle movement from normal position, and allowing lost motion of said handle in the other end of'the handle movement, a slidable dog for directly blocking said roll back by movement into the path of the same, and a connection between said dog and link for positively sliding said dog to and from roll back-blocking position upon said lost motion movement of said handle.
9. In a door latch. the combination of a back plate having a flange, a latch bolt projectable through said flange to latching position, spring means urging said latch bolt to projected latching position, a roll back at one side of said bolt, a projection from said bolt in position to be engaged by said roll back, a dog rectilinearly slidable in the direction of the movement of said bolt, and inside operated means for actuating said dog and retracting said bolt, said means comprising an operating plate, a pin and slot connection between said operating plate and bolt, the slots running in the direction of movement of the bolt, means connecting said operating plate to a remote control, and connections between said operating plate and dog moving said. dog into position to dog said roll back when the operating plate is moved toward said flange after the bolt is fully projected and during relative movement of said pin and slot and for retracting the dog from dogging position when the plate is moved away from the flange to engage the pin with the end of the slot for bolt retraction.
10. In a door latch, in combination wit a tensioned bolt, means operable from the inside of the door for retracting the bolt, means operable from the outside of the door for retracting the bolt, slidable means for dogging said outside retracting means and means between said inside retracting means and the slidable means whereby retracting movement of the inside means first retracts said slidable means and subsequently retracts the bolt, said last named means including an operative connection between said inside means and sliding means whereby movement of the inside retracting means in a non-bolt-retracting direction positively moves said dog to dogging position.
11. In a door latch, in combination with a tensioned bolt, means operable from the'outside for retracting said bolt,- slidable means for dogging said outside retracting means, means operable from the inside of the door for retracting said bolt, said inside means comprising a reciprocating handle having a normal position at an intermediate point in,
other end of the handle movement for posi' tively moving said dog to dogging position While said bolt is fully projected, and for retracting said dog whereby retracting movement of the inside handle first retracts the slidable dogging means and subsequently retracts the bolt.
12. In a door latch, the combination with a tensioned latch bolt,of means operable from the outside of the door for retracting the bolt, means operable from the inside of the door for retracting the bolt, said means being mounted at a point distant from said outside means and for movement in opposite directions from a normal position, and a connection between said inside means and bolt compelling retraction of the latter on movement of said inside means in one of its directions, said connection including a slidable bar movable in the direction of movement of said bolt, a dogging lug operatively connected to the forward end of said bar engagable directly with said outside means upon movement of said inside means in its opposite direction, and a pin and slot connection between said bar and bolt affording lost motion of said bar relative to said bolt, whereby retracting movement of the inside means first retracts said bar and dogging lug and subsequently retracts the bolt.

In a door latch, a back plate, a ten-- gle element having a portion movable between said contact surfaces, a portion of said element being movable into and out of blocking engagement with said outside retracting means while the bolt is fully projected, and means for operating said element fromthe inside operated handle.
14. In a door latch, a back plate. a tensioned latch bolt movable over said back plate, outside operated means for retracting said bolt, an inside operated handle for retracting said bolt, a pair of contact surfaces on said bolt spaced longitudinally thereof,
a single element having a portion movable between said contact surfaces, a'portion of said element being movable into and out of.
blocking engagement with said outside retracting means while the bolt is fully projected, said element being movable rearwardly a distance suflicient to retract the bolt by engagement with the rear abutment, and means for operating said element from the inside operated handle.
15. The combination with a latch bolt, of a spring normally projecting said bolt, outside means for retracting said bolt, inside means for retracting said bolt comprising a reciprocable handle having a normal position at an intermediate point in its path, a reciproeating dog, and means operated by the handie for retracting the bolt and allowing full projection thereof during the reciprocation of the handle from normal position through one end of its path and forpositively moving the dog to dogging position during movement of the handle from normal position to the other end of its. path and positively returning the dog to releasing position when the handle is returned to normal position;

A door latch comprising a back plate, a spring tensioned latch bolt on said back plate, an'outside retractor including a roll back for withdrawing. said bolt, an inside retractor for said bolt including a single element having a lost motion connection with said bolt for retracting the same, and movable to another position into direct engagement with said roll back to render the latter inoperative.
17 In a remote control latch, the combination of a latch unit, a bolt s'lidably supported by said unit, a separate remote control; unit including an operating handle, an outside retractor for said bolt mounted on the latch unit,- rectilinearly slidable means for dogging said retractor mounted on the latch unit, an inside operated plate secured on the latch unit, a mounting for said plate affording lost motion thereof relative to said bolt when the latter is in-projected or latching position, a
- connection between said dogging means and plate for moving said dogging means to .dog
and release said outside retractor when the bolt is projected, and means connecting the plate and the operating handle on the remote control unit.
