My invention relates to improvements in machines for fixing tubular mouthpieces to cigarettes, ments is to rovide a machine by means of which the tu ular wrapper is fixed to a complete cigarette. Another object of the improvements is to provide a machine by means of which a large number of cigarettes can be provided with their mouthpieces, the efiiciency of the machine corresponding to the output of a cigarette making machine. and con/e the tubular mouthpieces ymg As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the inouthpieces are tapering in form, and therefore they must be assorted so that they are located wit their large end in position for being fixed to the cigarettes. The assorting and conveyin mechanism is shown in Figs. and 6, and 1 comprises a drum A provided with two end walls 1 and 2 and having its cylindrical wall provided by rods 3 arranged in groups say of three rods located in close relation to one another, the groups being s aced from one another, as is shown at 4. e drum is provided with a tubular hub 5 rotatably mounted on a fixed tubular axis 6 secured to the frame 7.
The drum A is adapted to be rotated by means of 9. ar wheel 8 fixed to the end wall 1 and meshing with a pinion 9 adapted to be rotated through the intermediary of gear wheels 10, 11 and 12 from a driving shaft 13. Into the said drum the mouthpieces are delivered by means of a chute 14. Within the said drum A a cylindrical brush 15 is eccentrically mounted which is rotatable on a stationary axis 16 securedto a disk 17 fixed to the tubular axis 6. The hub 18 of the brush 15 is rotatable on the axis 16 and it is adapted to be rotated by means of a gear wheel 19 and a pinion 20 secured to the driving shaft 13.
By the said gear wheels the drum 15 is rotated relatively to the drum A. The cylindrical wall of the drum A is partly covered by a concentric jacket 22 formed at its bottom with a bevelled edge 21, as is best shown in Figs. 7 and 8. The brush 15 is mounted within the drum A so that the distance be- I tween the same and the jacket 22 is not larger than the diameter of the mouthpieces. Therefore only those mouthpieces are held back by the cylindrical brush 15, which are located on the ups of rods 3, while the mouthpieces fal ing into the spaces 4 are car-,.
ried along by the rods 3 and drop from the drum when assing the bevelled edge 21 of the jacket. he tubular mouthpieces M deliveredfrom the drum drop into the conveying device B comprising a pair of endless wires 23, the distance between the adjacent portions of the said wires being larger than the smallest diameter and smaller than the largest diameter of the mouthpieces, so that the mouthpieces engaged between the wires are directed with their reduced ends downwardly. B the said wires the said mouthpieces are elivered to an inclined chute 25 conveying the same with their reduced ends forwardly to the storing disk C. To assist the movement of the mouth ieces within the channel 25 I rovide a nozz e 26 for delivering a blast 0 air through the chute.
The storing device 0 consists of a stationary ring 27 formed at its top face with a spiral groove 28, which is broader at its top than at its bottom, as is shown in Figs. 4a and 10, so that the rear or reduced ends of the mouthpieces bear on the bottom of the groove, while the forwardly directed large ends are engaged between the inclined side walls of the groove. Above the ring 27 there is a rotary disk 29 provided at its bottom face with bristles 30, by means of-which the tubular mouthpieces delivered from the chute 25 into the groove 28 are continuously moved for to provide a nozzle for blowing a blast of air through the channel D, the blast of air acting incidentally to separate the mouthpieces from each other and to avoid nesting thereof.
By providing the storin ring 27 it is not necessary to operate the chain K exactly at the rate as the mouthpieces are delivered from the assorting drum A, because any excess of mouthpieces can be temporarily stored on the said ring. In some cases I provide regulating means for temporarily arresting the assortin drum when the storing ring has been fil ed with mouthpieces. In the figures such regulating means have not been illustrated.
In. connection with the foregoing attention is directed to Fig. 16 in which the means for feeding the mouthpieces individually are shown on an enlarged scale. In this figure travelling wires 23 convey the hollow mouthpieces M which drop from the drum A to a point beneath the air blast pipe or nozzle 26 l and above the chute 25. The blasts of air separately and successively assist in the passage of the mouthpieces through the chute to the root surfaces 28 of the storing ring 27 of the storing device C. Obviousl the passage of the mouthpieces between t e storing widened in the same manner as the inlet of the chute and above this widened inlet a blast air pipe may be provided similar to the blast air nozzle 26.
Apparatus for gluing the tubular mouthpieces mouthpieces in position. The chain travels (in the direction of .the arrow 37 shown in Fig. 4. The mouthpieces inserted into the tubular bolts are conveyed forwardly for revolving around the sprocket wheel 34. Coaxially of the said sprocket wheel a drum 38 is mounted, which drum has the same circumferential velocity as the chain K, the sprocket wheel and the drum being both mounted on a shaft 39, as is shown in Fig. 14.
' The shaft 39 is connected by gear wheels 40 and 41 witha pinion 42 meshing with an internal gear wheel 43 rotatable on the shaft 39. The said internal gear wheel is provided with external teeth 44 engaged by pinions 45 secured to plungers 46, the said plungers being rotatable and axiallyshiftable in flanges 47 and 48 of the drum 38. The plungers 46 are provided with heads 49 having a diameter nearly equal to the diameter of the tubular mouthpieces, and they are adapted to be coated with glue taken from the box E by means of the gluing disk F shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the heads of the plungers being rotated in contact with the said disk for taking glue therefrom. The glue applied to the heads of the plungers is transmitted to the ends of the mouthpieces, for which purpose the plungers 46 having their heads 49 coated with glue are shifted in axial direction. For thusjshifting the plungers slides 51 are provided which are guided in longitudinal slots 50 of the rotary drum 38. which slides are provided with noses 52 engaging between collars 53 and 54 fixed to the plungers 46. At their inner ends the said slides carry rollers 55 engaging in a stationary cam groove 56 made in a ring 57 having its hub 58 fixed to a portion 59 of the frame work of the machine. When rotating the drum 38 the rollers 55 of the slides travel in the groove 56, so that the slides are shifted lorgitudinally of the drum in accordance with the pitch of the said groove, thus driving the glued heads into the ends of the mouthpieces projecting from the tubular bolts 35 of the chain K and applying thereto glue while being rotated.

Apparatus for fixing the mouthpieces to the edge/rettes While the tubular mouthpieces are conveyed to the chain K and glue is applied thereto the cigarettes are conveyed into position for having the mouthpieces applied thereto, and they are taken either directly from the cigarette makin machine or from a storage receptacle. fie cigarettes are placed on the drum H and they are contracted at one of their ends so that the tubularmouthpiece can be readily placed thereon- In the construction shown in Fig. 4 the cigarettes are taken from a storage receptacle 60, and they are placed on an endless conveying band 61 directly or indirectly delivering the same into the open chambers or troughs 62 of the drum 63 mounted coaxially of the sprocket wheel 32, the said drum being rotated together with the sprocket wheel 32 from the shaft 64.
As the drum 63 rotates in the direction of the arrow 37 shown in Fig. 4 the cigarettes located in the channels 62 are pushed, by axially reciprocating plungers 65, into a ring 66 provided with bores corresponding in diameter to the diameter of the cigarettes. The plungers 65 are thus reciprocated in pairs, the pair of plungers 65 being secured to a slide 67 mounted on guide rods 68 and acted upon by a spring 69 tending to pull the same inwardly and to the right in Fig. 11 and with a roller 70 into engagement with a cam disk cigarettes Z at the right of the bores 72 spring rings 73 are provided the inner dameter of which is slightly smaller than the diameter of the cigarettes, and the said spring rings are adapted to be spread apart by coni cal plungers 74 to permit the cigarettes Z to be inserted into the same by the plungers The conical plungers 74 take part in the rotary movement of the 68, and they are I claim: shifted in axial direction by ins 75 project- 1. The plungers 65 and 74 are controlled by the cam 71 and the stop members 76 which are disposed relatively to each other so that at first the sprin rings 73 are spread b the conical plungers 4, and thereafter the p ungers 65 are advanced for inserting the cigarettes into the rings 73, whereupon the conical plungers 74 are retracted from the spring rings permitting the said springrings to contract and to compress the ends of the cigarettes, as is shown at the bottom part of Fig.
' 11. Thereafter the cigarettes which are held with their ends contracted in the spring rings 73 are further moved with the rota drum, and they are combined with the glue mouthpieces contained in the tubular bolts of the chain K. For this purpose coaxially of the s rocket wheel 32 and the drum 63 and at t e side opposite to the plungers 65 revolving lungers 77 are provided, the said plungers bein mounted on a rotar disk 78 secured to t e shaft 64. The sai plungers 77 are advanced when a cigarette has been fixed within the spring ring 73 and is in alignment with a mouthpiece the said mouthpiece M being first shifted forwardly b the head of the plunger 77 and through the .ollow plunger 74 and on the contracted end of thecigarette while simultaneously spreading the spring ring 73. In this operation the plunger 65 provides a stop for holding the ci arette in position while the plunger 77 is being advanced. Thereafter the plungers 65am retracted by the cam disk 71. The plungers 77 are mounted in pairs on slides 80 shiftable on guide rods 81 of the disk 78 and controlled by a cam groove 82 engaging rollers 83 carried by the slides.
At the end of the return movement of the plungers 65 the plungers 77 are further shifted forwardly, thus shifting the cigarettes Z and the mouthpieces fixed thereto in the direction of the arrow 79 and out of the channels 72 and into the channels 62 of the drum 63. Upon further rotation of the drum 63 the cigarettes having the mouthpieces fixed thereto drop from the open channels 62 and onto a conveying device such as an endless band N.
My improved machine may be directly connected with a cigarette making machine, or the cigarettes may be made on a separate machine.
While in describing the invention refer ence has been made to a particular example embod ing the same l wish it to be under- Stood that my invention is not limited to the construction shown in the drawings, and that various changes may be made in the general arrangement of the apparatus and the con struction of its parts Without departing from the invention.

A machine for fixing tubular mouthpieces to cigarettes, comprising a pair of carriers mounted for moving in unison one beside the other and provided with pairs of aligned channels adapted to contain res ctively a cigarette and a tubular mouthpiece therefor, operating means for said carriers, plungers adapted to engage the cigarettes and mouthpieces of a pair from opposite sides thereof and to shift the same on each other, and means for operating said plungers.
3. A machine 'forfixing tubular mouthpieces to cigarettes, comprising a pair of carriers mounted for revolving in unison one beside the other and provided with pairs of aligned channels adapted to contain respectively a cigarette and a tubular mouthpiece therefor, operating means for said carriers, and means for pushing the mouthpieces on the cigarettes.
4. A machine for fixing tubular mouthpieces to cigarettes, comprising a pair of carriers mounted for moving in unison one beside the other and provided with pairs of aligned channels ada ted to contain respectively a cigarette an a tubular mouthpiece therefor, operating means for said carriers, plungers movable with said carriers and adapted to engage the cigarettes and mouthpieces of a pair from opposite sides thereof and to shift the same on each other, and means for operating said plungers.
5. A machine for fixing tubular mouthpieces to cigarettes. comprising a rotary drum provided circumferentiallywith axial grooves adapted to receive cigarettes, a carried mounted for revolving coaxially of said drum and in unison therewith and provided with axial channels disposed for moving in alignment with said grooves and to receive mouthpieces, plungers mounted for moving with saiddrum in position for shifting the cigarettes placed in said grooves towards said channels, a stationary cam controlling the movement of said plungers, means for driving said drum and carrier, and means for shifting said mouthpieces towards said cigarettes.
6. A machine for fixing tubular mouthpieces to cigarettes, comprising a pair of carriers mounted for moving in unison one bes de the other and provided with pairs of ali ned channels adapted to contain respectively a cigarette and a tubular mouthpiece therefor, operating means for said carriers,

rings formed of coiled s rings and havmg a diameter smaller than t e cigarettes and located in position for having said cigarettes inserted into the same with the ends receiv- H ing the mouthpieces, plungers for spreading and rings before inserting the cigarettes and releasing the same after insertin the cigarette's, cam members controlling said plungers, and means for pushing the mouthpiecesno on the cigarettes.
8. A machine as claimed in claim 1, in which the carrier for the mouthpieces is in the form of an endless chain comprising tubular members adapted to receive the i6 mouthpieces.
9. A. machine for fixing tubular mouthpieces to cigarettes, comprising a pair of carriers mounted for moving in unison one beside the other and provided with pairs of aligned channels ada ted to contain respectively a cigarette an a tubular mouthpiece therefor, operating means for said carriers, means for appl in glue to the ends of the mouthpieces to e xed to the cigarettes, and means for pushing the mouthp1eces on the cigarettes.
10. In a machine for fixing mouthpieces to cigarettes, the combination, with the mechanism for fixing the mouthpieces to the cigarettes, of a rotary asserting drum having its cylindrical wall made from rods, a cylindrical brushwithin said drum and rotatable relatively thereto, a jacket part1 coverin said drum and'spaced from sai rods an formed with an inclined edge adapted to engage the mouthpieces passing between said r s, and means for conveying the mouthpieces delivered from said drum to the mechanism for fixing the same to the cigarettes.
11. In a machine for fixing mouthpieces to cigarettes, the combination, with the mechanism for fixing the mouthpieces to the cigarettes, of a rotary assorting drum having its cylindrical wall made from rods, a cylindrical brush within said drum and rotatable relatively thereto, a jacket part1 covering said drum and spaced from sai rods and formed with an inclined edge ada ted to engage the mouthpieces between sai rods, and means for conveying the mouthpieces delivered from said drum to the mechanism for I P v fixing the same to the cigarettes, said means com rising a pair of endless bands moving longitudinally of said drum at the delivery 05 end thereof and spaced from each other a distance smaller than the largest diameter and larger than the smallest diameter of the mouth races.
12. n a machine for fixing mouthpieces to cigarettes, the combination, with the mechanism for fixing the mouthpieces to the cigarettes of a rotary assorting drum having its cylindrical wall made from rods, a cylindrical brush within said drum and rotatable relatively thereto, a jacket part1 coverin said drum and spaced from sai rods an formed with an inclined edge adapted to engg-(ge the mouthpieces passlng between said r s, and means for conveying the mouth pieces delivered from said drum to the mechanism for fixing the same to the cigarettes, said means comprising a disk forms with a spiral groove 1n position for having the mouthp1eces deposited therein and a brush in sition for engaging the mouthpieces placed 1n said groove, and means for rotating said brush and disk relatively to each other in a direction for shifting the mouthpieces through said spiral groove.
13. A machine as claimed in ciaim 1, in which the carrier for the mouthpieces is in the form of an endless chain comprising tubular members adapted to receive the mouthpieces, and sprin s provided internal-.

14. inachine as claimed in claim I, in which the carrier for the mouthpieces is in the form of an endless chain comprising tubular members adapted to receive the mouthpieces, two 5 rocket wheels on which said chain is traine glue a plying plungers revolving coaxially of an m unison with one of said sprocket wheels and in ali ment with said tubular members, means or applying glue to said plungers, and means for reciprocating said plungers towards and away from the mouthpieces within said tubular members.
15. A machine as claimed in claim 1, in which the carrier for the mouthpieces is in the form of an endless chain comprising tubular members ada ted to receive the mouthpieces, two s roc et wheels on which said chain is traine lue applying plungers revolving coaxially 0 an in unison with one of said sprocket wheels and in alignment with said tubular members, means for applying glue tosaid plungers, means for reclprocatmg said 1plungers towards and away from the mout pieces within said tubular members, and means for rotating said glue applying plungers .while reciprocating the same, and relatively fixed glue applying means adapted to be engaged by the rotating lungers.
