Description
.D- HUGHES.
BAKE-0VEN- JAMES R OSG Patented 0ct.10. 1876.
ODD 5' CO BOSTON 'NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID HUGHES, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAKE-OVENS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,007, dated October 10, 1876; application filed August 7, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAvTD HUGHES, a resident of the city of New Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bake-Ovens; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this speciiication.
My invention is intended more especially for that class of ovens in which the bake-pans are suspended from revolving reels. As will be seen by, reference to the accompanying drawing, its interior is provided with iues, in which tire heat is conveyed through the oven to a chamber directly above the same, and from whence its only outlet is through a chimney provided with a regulating or check valve.
The nature of my improvements will be better understood by referring to the drawing, on which- Figure l is a perspective view of my invention 5 and Fig. 2 a vertical section of the same.
A is a casing of masonry or metal surrounding a metal oven, B, the interior of which is provided at the sides and back thereof with iiues C, through which the heat passes from the furnace D to a chamber, E, where it is concentrated or allowed to escape through the chimney F by opening valve G, the stem of which is provided with a lever, H, one end of which is weighted, while the other end is furnished with a cord or chain for its operation. I is a flue, which communicates with the oven and chimney. It is intended for carrying oft' moisture and steam, which arises from the material being baked. Like the chimney, it is also provided with a valve, K, which, when open, admits of the steam and moisture being drawn through to the chimney and discharged through the valve thereof with the smoke and heat from the furnace.
The front of this oven is closed by ahinged door, L, which, when open, affords an entrance to the interior of the oven for cleaning or repairing the same. This door is furnished with an opening covered by a sliding door, M, to the top of which is attached a cord, a, the free end of which is run over the pulleys o c', operating on pins which are secured near the top of the casing, as shown. By pulling the hanging end ot' this cord the sliding door may be raised clear of the openin g, so that the bread may be passed through the latter, to or from the pans of the revolving reel, which is secured upon a shaft, N, the outer projecting end of which is furnished with a crank, as shown at O in Fig. l.
Frein the drawing and above description it will be perceived that my improved oven possesses a very great amount of heating-surface, while at the same time its construction is such that no iire, smoke, or dirt can possibly enter therein hence the bread, 85e., is thoroughly and rapidly baked Without having imparted to it any foreign taste or smell.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The bake-oven herein described, provided with heating-dues C, steam-fine I, and
y hinged door L, the latter having a slide-covered opening constructed therein, all arranged to operate as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the casing A, furnace D, heat-chamber E, and chimney F, the oven B, provided with heating-nues C and iiue I, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
DAVID HUGHES.
Witnesses T. J. ROACH, J. C. HUBBELL.
