IMPROVEMENT IN HOLDBACKS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,960, dated October 3, 1876; application filed August 18, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, 0. M. ROBINSON and A. J. MERRILL, of Upper Jay, in the county of Essex and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Holdbacks and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in holdbacks and it consists in making the hook or catch with two ends, in each of which is journaled a rubber roller,,the peripheries of which touch each other, and yet allow a strap to be forced in between them, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of our invention. V V
a represents the hook or catch, in which the holdback strap catches, and which is shaped as shown, so as to have the two ends 0, which approach near together. Each end is pronged, and has a rubber or yielding roller, d, journaled in it, which rollers may be of the same or unequal sizes, and have their surfaces come together, so that a strap can be readily forced in either direction between them, but will not pass without being forced.
This holdback is to be used on vehicles of all kinds, is noiseless and safe under all conditions.
Having thus described our invention, we claim- The hook a, having the two ends 0, in which are journaled the rollers d, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 9th day of August, 1876.
