l. M. CRAFTS GOVERNOR Filed March 28,- 1930 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 Patented Oct. 27, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE IRVING M. CRAFTS, OF GILDERSLEEVE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOB- TO THE PIGKERING GOVERNOR COMPANY, OF PORTLAND, CONNECTICUT, A vCOR/POR-A'IIKDN GOVERNOR Application filed March 28,
This invention relates to an improvement in governors and particularly to centrifugal governors. These governors include springs attached at one end to a sleeve fixed to a spindle and at the other end to a collar longitudinally movable on said spindle, the weights being thrown outward by centrifugal force. In governors of this type, the weights are moved solely by the springs, which are liable to torque, particularly when the speed changes. It is necessary that these sprmgs should have considerable flexibility, and, to avoid torque, recourse has been made to using two or more springs for each weight.
The object of this invention is to provide a cage around said weights, to imp-art movement thereto and to prevent torque, and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In the accompanying drawmgs:
Fig. 1 is a front view, partly in section, of a governor constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a side View of the same;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line l4: of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the guidecage, detached.
In illustrating my invention, I have shown it in connection with a governor forming the subject of an application filed February 3, 1930, Serial No. 425,562, but it Wlll be understood that the invention is applicable to various types of governors.
The governor of the type shown includes a spindle and a sleeve 11 to which springs 12 and 13 are connected, the other ends of the springs being connected with a collar 14. loose on the spindle, the collar 14 being coupled with a controlling-mechanism. Connected with the springs are weights 15 and 16 and, as shown, these weights have parallel side walls 17 These weights are arranged in a guide-cage 18 formed with a sleeve 19 which is fixed to the spindle 10 so as to turn therewith, and this cage includes two box- like chambers 20 and 21 having parallel side walls 1930. Serial No. 439,601.
22 between which the weights 15 and 16 are arranged and in which they are free to move radially but held against torque. Preferably, the two chambers will also be connected by a centrally-arranged flange 23 for reinforcement.
As the spindle 10 is turned, the cage and weights are turned with it, and as the speed increases, the weights move outward so as to draw the collar 14: downward and through suitable mechanism control the device for which it is used.
The cages move the weights, which are thus guided in their movement, both laterally and vertlcally, and the weights so closely fit the chamber that they cannot be turned and hence prevent torque of the springs.
I claim:
1. In a governor, the combination with a spindle, a sleeve fixed to the spindle, a collar movable on said spindle, springs connecting the sleeve and collar, weights mounted on said springs, and cages within which the said weights closely fit and may move radially but by which torque of the springs is prevented.
2. In a governor, the combination with a spindle, a sleeve fixed to the spindle, a collar movable on said spindle, springs connecting the sleeve and collar, weights mounted on said springs, and a guide-cage fixed to the spindle and including a separate chamber for each weight and in which weights closely fit, whereby torque of the springs is prevented.
3. In a governor, the combination with a spindle, a sleeve fixed to the spindle, a collar movable on said spindle, springs connecting the sleeve and collar, weights having parallel side walls and mounted on said springs, and a guide-cage secured to said spindle and formed with chambers having parallel side walls enclosing said weights.
4. In a governor, the combination with a spindle, a sleeve fixed to the spindle, a collar movable on said spindle, springs connecting the sleeve and collar, weights having parallel side walls and mounted on said springs, and a guide-cage having two chambers arranged on opposite sides of the spindle and formed with chambers having parallel side walls en- 7 closing said weights.
5. In a governor, the combination with a r spindle, a sleeve fixed to the spindle, a collar movable on said spindle, springs connecting the sleeve and collar, weights mounted on said springs and-having parallel side walls,
and a guide-cage formed with a sleeve fixed to said spindle, cages on opposite sides of said sleeve, said cages connected by a web, the
said chambers having parallel side walls between which the said weights may move.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this 5' IRVING M. CRAFTS;
specification.
