The invention relates to new and useful improvements in sheet folding and delivering mechanisms, and more especially to such improvements in said mechanisms adapted 3 to fold and deliver running webs from fast rotary perfecting printing presses and the like.
Objects and advantages of the invention v will be set forth in part hereinafter and in lo part will be obvious herefrom, or Vmay be learned by practice with the invention, the same being realized and attained by means of the instrmnentalities and combinations pointed out in the appended claims.

.The invention is directed to mechanism especially capacitaed to cut and fold olf the sheets, or groups thereof, collected or uncollected, from very fast running webs, for
instance, the perfected and longitudinallyr being preferably of reliable and tested design and operation, thereby insuring reliability of operation, absence of stoppages and brealrages, and other faults, while maintaining the desired high speed of product output.
Referring in detail to the embodiment of the invention illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, a cylinder l is shown provided with sheet cutting, sheetholding and releasing, and sheet-folding mechanisms, and a cooperating cylinder 2 is provided with like devices. These cooperating cylinders and their attendant mechanisms are capacitated to take the running webs' from the printing press or other source of supply, to cut same into sheets and either to fold the cut-off sheets alternately from one cylinder and its folding mechanism and then .rom the other cylinder and its folding mechanism, or to collect on one of said cylinders.
and to fold off therefrom the entire product from said source of supply into a single folding mechanism. In the application of the present vinvention to fast rota-ry perfecting printing presses, the perfected webs, usually four pages wide, are centrally slit, the two halves being run over a pair of formers, and hen directed to the two cylinders to be operated on in one of the alternative ways as already described. It will be understood that other sources of'web supply may be provided as may be desired.

In said exemplary embodiment, a cylinder 1 is provided with a shaft 5, and suitable supporting heads 6, the shaft 5 being journaled inthe side frames? at eith'ersivdepf the pressi Y Said cylinder as embodied is a three-way'cyle inder, that is, it has three sheet-carrying surfaces arranged about its periphery. The cylinder is provided with suitable sheet-cutting devices cooperating with corresponding devices upon the cylinder 2. As embodied, the cylinder 1 has three female cutting members ,12, 13 and 111. In this present embodiment the diameter of thecylinders 1 and 2 is in the ratio of three to two, and accordingly the cylvso ' 40. nismfor for the collecting and folding olf of inder 2 is provided with two cooperating `the'web yimmediately after the sheets are cut in the'usual manner. In each ofthe impaling pin devices, the series of pins are mounted 1n a bar 26 carried upon arms 27, fixed upon l a shaft 28, the shaft-"28 being j ournaled in the heads of the cylinder 1. The shaft 28 projects from the cylinder head at one end, and on the projecting end of the shaft is fixed an arm 29,upon which is mounted a'cam roller 30 which runs on the cam for timing'the operation of the pins to take and to release the sheets in proper time, either for the alternate folding olf arrangement of the mechathe entire product by the cylinder 1. yThe embodied form of `folding 0E mechavnisms upon cylinder 1 comprises a plurality of single-edge rotatable folding blade mechw nisms, one set being located' at each Lof the sheet-holding surfaces on the cylinder. The shaft 47' has one endv projecting from the cylinder 1, and fixedto said shaft end is a crossbar 48, carryingV cam rollers 49 and" 50 at either end thereof. rlhese cam4 rollers run on a circularV track 51 of the kind commonly used with the so-called Husby cam movement.
The folding mechanism 55 has a single folding blade 56, mounted on a shaft 57, which is journaled in the cylinder heads.

' The rotaryactuating cam,'- as embodied,
comprises la cam' disc 77 fixed to and rotating with a stub shaft 78, mounted on the machine frame. Thek cam 77 is provided with two cam slots 79 and. 80,' whichl cooperate with the cam rollerson the folding devices, these cam' slots being arranged insubstantially tangential relation to a circle concentric with the cam shaft. The cam is rotatedby a gear 81iiXed thereto, which meshes with a gear 82, iixedon the shaft 5 ofthe cylinder 1.
The cam has a three-to-two Vratio of revolutiontothey cylinder,V and therefore actuates each ofthefolding mechanisms each time that it passes thecam. l

The folding mechanism 91 on the cylinder 2 is double-bladed, having two blades 92 and 93 fixed to a shaft 94, which is journaled in the cylinder heads. On the end thereof which projects from the head of the cylinder 2 shaft 9--.is provided with a crossbar 95 at the ends of which are mounted cam rollers 96 and 97. These cam rollers run on a fixed circular cam track 98. Cooperating therewith is the rotary cam 99, mounted on the shaft 100, journaled on the machine frame. Fixed to the cam disc is a gear wheel 101 which cooperates with a gear wheel 102, fixed on the shaft 103 of cylinder 2, which latter shaft is journaled in the machine frame. The cam is provided with three cam slots 104, 105 and 106, which are tangentially positioned in the manner already described. Cooperating with the folding mechanism in the cylinder 2 are two folding- od rollers 109 and 110, which are adapted to deliver the folded papers to a rotary delivery mechanism indicated generally at 111, which may comprise a star wheel and traveling delivery belt of known form. The cam 99 makes four revolutions for three revolutions of the cylinder 2, and actuates the folding mechanism every time it passes the folding rollers.
As regards the operation of the folding mechanism when. running straight, that is, when one group of sheets cut from the running web is taken by and is folded od from cylinder 1, and the next group is taken by and folded olf from cylinder 2, the mechanism mai;v be regarded as in the position or Fig. 2, and the web leads having been taken by the impaling pins 23. Vhen the folding mechanism 65 reaches the folding- olf rollers 85 and 86, it is actuated and the folding blade folds off the sheets between the folding The next lead of the web is taken by the cylinder 2, in a manner hereafter to be described. r1`he impaling pins 22 of cylinder 1, therefore, do not take the web, but pass the sheet-cutting position retracted within the cylinder.
l/Vhen the folding mechanism 55 reaches the folding-off rollers 85 and 86, the folding 'mechanism is actuated, but due to there being but a single folding blade, the folding blade 56 at this time moves within the cylinder during the semi-rotation of the shaft 57, and there is no'folding-off action, which is proper, as there are no sheets on the section. vThen the folding olf mechanism reaches the folding position, it is actuated and the folding blade 1-6 folds olf the sheets in the rf'sual manner. When folding mechanism 65 next reaches the folding position, it is actuated, but the folding blade 66 rotates within the cylinder, and there are no sheets on this section of the cylinder, and therefore no folding od. Vhen folding mechanism next passes the folding position it is actuated and folding blade 56 folds ofi the sheets from the cylinder. 'Vhen folding mechanism 45 again passes the folding position it is actuated, but the blade 46 rotates within the cylinder and there are no sheets on the section and therefore no folding off. This completes one cycle of operation of the folding mechanism.
T he folding mechanism is the same whether the mechanism is run straight 0r collect. ll/hen the mechanism is run straight, every other group 0f sheets cut from the webs is delivered to cylinder 2 and every alternate sheet supporting space on cylinder 1 consequently passes the folding position vacant and this corresponds to the non-folding actuation of the particular folding mechanism. Vxlhen the machine is run collecting, and all the products are taken by and folded off from the cylinder 1, the non-folding actuation of each folding mechanism corresponds to the collecting period for the particular sheet supporting section. That is the first group of sheets is carried past the folding position, and the second group of sheets is taken upon the first group, and as so collected, they are folded offl together on the neXt passage of the folding off rollers.
Referring now to the folding-olf action of cylinder 2, it may be considered that the impaling pins o3 are in the projected position and are carrying a group of sheets, as the folding mechanism 91 comes to the foldingoff rollers 109 and 110, the impaling pins 33 are retracted, and the sheets are folded off by either folding' blade into the bight of the folding-off rollers 109 and 110. rPhe next time the impaling pins pass the sheet-cutting position, they are retained in the retracted position, and do not take the lead of the web, which has been taken by one of the sets of iinpaling pins on the cylinder 1, and on this half rotation the folding mechanism of cylinder 2 is actuated idly.

A sheet folding and delivery mechanism including in combination a cylinder having a plurality of circumferentially disposed sheet supporting means, a cooperating cylinder having a different number of circumferentially disposed sheet supporting means, means for taking the successive running web leads from a printing press optionally on a single cylinder or on both cylinders, sheet cutting means, and folding devices for folding olf a product from either cylinder, or the product from a single cylinder.

A sheet folding and delivery mechanism including in combination a cylinder having a plurality of circumferentially disposed sheet supporting means, a cooperating cylinder having a different number of circumferentially disposed sheet supporting means, means for taking the successive running web leads from a printing press optionally on a single cylinder or on both cylinders, folding' devices on both cylinders, and cooperating delivery means for taking a folded product from one cylinder or from both cylinders.

A sheet folding and delivery mechanism including in combination a cylinder having a plurality of circumferentially disposed sheet supporting means and corresponding sheet taking and releasing means and folding means, and a cooperating cylinder having a different number of circumferentially disposed sheet supporting means and sheet taking and releasing means, optionally usable sheet collecting means, and folding means.

A sheet folding and delivery mechanism including in combination a cylinder having a plurality of circumferentially disposed sheet supporting means, a cooperating cylinder having a different number of circumferentially disposed sheet supporting means, means for taking the successive running web leads from a printing press directly on a cylinder, sheet cutting means, optionally usable sheet collecting means, and folding devices for folding of't1 a product from either cylinder, or the product from a single cylinder.
