This invention relates to engine constructions and refers more particularly to internal combustion engines of the sleeve valve type.-
More particularly my invention relates to 5 air cooled sleeve valve engines and provides an improved built up cylinder construction.
One object of my invention resides in pro viding a light, strong, cylinder construction particularly adapted for-use in airplane en- 1 gines although not necessarily limited thereto.
My construction lends itself to quantity pro-' d'uction at relative low cost. I
A further feature of my invention resides in the provision of a novel cylinder construction in which the ports cooperating'with the sleeve valve ports are constructed and arranged in a novel'and improved manner facilitating production of the engine.

In the drawings,reference charactersA and B respectively represent the upper and lower cooperating cylinder members, the lower member B being preferably of steel or metal of similar good wearing characteristics and the upper member A being preferably of a num alloy affording good heat conductivity. The member B is provided with outwardly projecting cooling fins 10 and has an upwardly extending relatively thin-walled cylinder portion 11 preferably terminating in a chamfered or tapered end 12. The member A also has cooling fins 13' projecting from a central body portion 14, the.body portion.

movement of one or more sleeve valves 19. As illustrated a single sleeve valve of the well known Burt-McCollum type is located within the cylinder members A, B, and surrounding the engine piston 20. j
The member A is formed with intake and relatively light weight metal such as alumiv exhaust chambers 21 and 22 respectively for introduction of fuel mixture to thecombustion chamber 23 and for the exhaust gases.
The chambers 21 and 22 need not be formed with the cylinder ports since I have formed the intake and exhaust cylinder ports 24 and 25 respectively in the cylinder portion -11. This latter portion being relatively thin walled may be conveniently machined with the ports facilitating the production and lessening the manufacturing expense. The
sleeve valve 19 is provided with intake and exhaust ports 26 and 27 respectively cooperating with the cylinder ports 24 and-25 for producing the valving functions of the engine in a well known manner. 7
, In assembling the members A and B I prefer to heat the member A and thread it i into position on the'member B by reason of threads 16. The member A on cooling will assembly of a permanent character. The chamfered end 12 of the cylinderportion 11 will bite into the body-portion 14 of the member A producing a seal joint between the combustion chamber 23 and the chambers '21, 22. The cylinder bore may then be ground to size.
'While I have illustrated my invention in connection with a single sleeve valve engine of the Burt-McCollum type it isapparent that the .teachings'of my invention may be utilized in connection with other types of sleeve valve and like engines. I I
What I claim as my invention is:
1. Cylinder construction for sleeve valve engines comprising incombination, a lower member formed with an upwardly extending cylinder portion provided with intake and exhaust ports, an upper member'having a downwardly extending portion surrounding the lower member and secured thereto, said upper member having an annular recess re- -thus be shrunk into position producingan ceiving the cylinder portion of the lower member and also having intake and exhaust chambers open to the said cylinder ports, ported sleeve valve-means within the cylinder portion, and a cylinder head carried by the uppermember depending therewith to provide a sleeve pocket.
2. Cylinder construction for sleeve valve engines comprising in combination, a lower exhaust chambers, a cylinder head carried by member formed with an upwardly extendsaid cylindrical member and havingaportion ing cylinder portion provided-with intake depending therein and spaced therefrom ,to
and exhaust ports, an upper member having a downwardly extending portion surrounding the lower member and secured thereto, said upper member having an annular recess receiving the cylinder portion of the lower member and also having intake and exhaust chambers open to the said cylinder ports, ported sleeve valve means within the cylinder'portion, and a cylinder head carried by the upper member depending therewithin to provide a sleeve pocket, the upper extremity of the cylinder portion terminating in a chamfered portion biting into the annular recess of the upper member.
3. Cylinder construction for sleeve valve engines comprising in combination, a lower member formed with an upwardly extending cylinder portion provided with intake and exhaust ports, an upper member having a downwardly extending portion surrounding the lower member and secured thereto, said upper member having an annular recess receiving the cylinder portion of the lower member and also having intake and exhaust chambers open to the said cylinder ports,
ported sleeve valve means within the cylinder portion, and a cylinder head carried by the upper member depending therewithin to provide a sleeve pocket, said upper member being of a relatively light weightmetal and said lower member being of a metal having good wearing characteristics.
4:. Cylinder construction comprising a cylindrical member provided with intake and exhaust chambers, a cylinder head carriedby said cylindrical member and having a portion depending therein and. spaced therefrom to form a sleeve pocket, a second member secured to the first said member and having a relatively thin walled cylinder member telescoped within the first member, said second member having intake and exhaust ports opening outwardly to said chambers respectively, and sleeve valve means operable within the second member.

Cylinder construction comprising a cylindrical member provided with intake and exhaust chambers, a cylinder head carried bv said cylindrical member and having ELPOIT- tion depending therein and spaced therefrom to form a sleeve pocket, a second member se-- cured to the first said member and having a relatively thin walled cylinder member telescoped within the first meinber, said second member having intake and "exhaust ports opening outwardly to said chambers respectively, and sleeve valve means operable within the second member and between thedepending cylinder head portion. and the first member. v e I 6. Cylinder construction comprising telescoped cooperating members providing substantially a continuous cylindrical bore one of which is relatively thin walled and ported for intake and exhaust, sleeve valve means contacting for the most part with the said thin walled member, the other of said members having intakeand exhaust chambers formed around said intake and exhaust ports, and a cylinder headcarried by one of said members and having a portion depending within and spaced from the other of said members, said sleeve valve means operating within the space provided by the cylinder head depending portion.

Cylinder construction comprising a member of metal having the characteristics of steel and provided with a relatively thin cylinder wall ported for intake and exhaust, a second member ofmetal having the characteristics of aluminum alloy and provided with a portion chambered for intake and exhaust telescoped around the ported-portion of the first said member, a cylinder head carried by the second said member, and sleeve valve means operablewithin the first said member and having a bearing during movement thereof with the second said member.

Cylinder 4 construction {comprising a member of metal having the characteristics of steel and provided with a relatively thin cylindrical wall ported for intake and exhaust, a second member of metal having the characteristics of aluminum alloy and provided with aportion chambered for intake and exhaust 'telesceped around the ported port on of the first said member, said members hav ng portions cooperating to provide a substantially continuous cylindrical bore, a cylinderhead carried by the second said member and having a. portion depending 'itherewithin, said depending portion extending below the upper l extremity of the first said member.
I 11. Cylinder construction comprising a member of metal having the characteristics of steel and provided with arelativel thin cylindrical wall ported for intakean exhaust,
a second member of metal having the characteristics of aluminum alloy and provided with a portion chambered for intake andexhaust 1o telescoped around the ported portionof the first said member, a cylinder head carried by the second said member, and having a portion depending therewithin, said depending portion extending below the up er extremlty of the first said member, and a ove the'tops of the said chambers of the second said member.

Cylinder construction comprising an outer member formed with an annular recessed portion and an inner member having a go relatively thin walled cylinder portion within said annular recess, said cyhnder portion having a chamfered end biting into the annular recessed portion forming a seal joint, sleeve valve means within the inner member,
