The present invention relates to burial vaults and more especially to a combined casket and vault.

Amon the objects of the invention is a '8 combined casket and vault which may be easily and efiectivel sealed after receiving the body and again ermetically sealed as a vault and by means effectively preventing openin thereof.

10 Anot er object is a-device of the character described which when being used as a casket permits ready concealment of the sealing means andpresents the appearance of an ornamental casket.

39 In the drawings, the preferred form of embodiment of the invention is shown as com prising a metallic body portion. having suitable handles 11 and provided, if desire with ornamental panels 12. At the sides and ends the metal of the body is preferably turned outwardly and downwardly at its up 1' edge as shown best in Fig. 2 at 15 an 16 to provide a wide seat at 15 for appearance and more especially for a purpose to be indicated.

A short distance from the up er edge of the body 10 it is preferred to we (1 or otherwise secure a metallic channel strip of substantially triangular cross section 20, extending outwardly beyond the portion 16, to form a shoulder or ledge 21 serving as a seat for the vault lid as subse uently herein described. And at suitable locations within the body 10, wooden nailing strips25 will be placed and held fixed by means of suitablemetal clips or brackets 26 preferably spot welded to the metal of the body.

Near the upper edge of the .body It) is welded or otherwise secured, preferably in air-tight relation to the metalof the body, a strip of metal 30 which is bent longitudinally to provide a vertical ortion 31 for securing to body 10, and an-mwardly projectingportion turned u and back upon itself to provide an outwar y projecting flange 32 spaced from the body wall. Th1s flange 32 serves as means to which the casket cover may be secured as by a plurality of clamps 33 The casket cover comprises a frame member 40 having a downwardly and outwardly extending flange portion 41 adapted to rest upon the above mentioned flange 32 and be clamped thereon, a suitable gasket 42 being used to seal the junction. The frame member 40 is provided with a central opening for the reception of a plate of glass 43 which may be held in place by an inner frame element 44 screwed or otherwise secured to member 40, a suitable seat 45 being provided for the glass. a

The frame member 40 likewisehas hinged to it, as at 50. a casket lid 51, preferably arched over the glass 43 and resting upon suitable horizontal portions of the member 40. It is preferred to make the lid 51 in two portions as indicated in Fig. 1 and to .provide' in the lower recessed side wooden nailing strips 52 .also held by suitable welded on clips or straps 53. The strips 52 and 25 are of course for securing proper fabric lines (not shown").

The vault lid consists of sheet metal formed to arch over in any suitable shape the casket lid 51 and extend outwardly to-the edge of shoulder 21 The outer edge of the lid 60 being preferably turned down and then inwardly to form a suitable rim 61 adapted to rest upon the shoulder 21, outside of body portion 15.

Channel members one of which is shown at 62 are secured by welding or otherwise to the underside of the vault lid 60 with their backs or closed sides against the latter. Locking or latching means, such as bolts 63, are mounted within the channel members, the bolts 63 engaging channel bars 64 secured to the inner surface of the body 10. Now having described the invention and the preferred forms of embodiment thereof, it is to be understood that the said invention is to be limited, not to the specific details herein set forth, but only by the scope of the claim which follows:

I claim A combined casket and vault comprising a body portion having vertical side walls, a flanged member inside of the bodyportion near the top thereof and secured to the side walls. to provide .an inner' peripheral shoulder, an open frame fixedly secured to said inner peripheral shoulder, a transparent plate in the opening of said frame, a cover hingedly secured to said frame and adapted to cover the transparent plate, a flanged member outside of the body portion near the top thereof and secured to the side walls to provide an outer peripheral shoulder above the inner peripheral shoulder, a vault lid resting upon the outer shoulder to seal the body portion, and spring projected bolts carried by the lid on its under surface inside the body and adapted to engage a portion of the side walls to lock the lid to the body, 7
