A sheet metal carriage retaining gib or bracket. member 24 is held to the carriage bed by screws 25 and 25 at the under side of the bed and has a pair of carriage retaining arms QG curved upward and forward around the outside of the rear raceway flange of the carriage and an intermediate upwardly and rearwardly extending rigid stop arm 2'?. The carriage has a feedrack 28 meshing with a feed pinion 29 ona shaft 30 journalled in a bushing 31 swaged in a metal plate 32 forming par; of the dog rocker supporting bracket Vof the machine which is rigidly held to the carriage bed. The bushing extends through lan aperture in the bed and a hubbed escapement ratchet wheel 41 is fixed on shaft 30 below the bushing.
The bushing 31 is stepped to provide a short, intermediate, cylindrical bearing por' tion (indicated in dotted lines in 4) on which is pivoted a line-locking lever and carriage stop 34, the bearing portion of s. ld lever being confined between the plate 32 and 'the upper end of the larger lower port-ion of the bushing. A. spring 36 anchored to a suitable part on the carriage bed at one end is connected at its other end to lever 34 which it normally holds in the position shown in Fig. 2, with stop edge 37 of the lever against one side of the head of the screw 25, linelocliing arm 38 of the lever out of locking position7 and margin stop operated arm 39 of the lever to the right of the vertical, stopengagement7 left hand edge o-f stop arm 27 gib 24. The head of screw 25 is thicker than Athat of screw 25 so as to project into the path of the lever 34, while arm 38 of lever` 34 is odset downward to clear the thin head of screw 25a.

engagement of the rear edges of said apertures with the rear face of the bar when the springs are fully compressed, if desired. The arrangement shown is preferred, however, the foremost edge portions of the stepped rear edges of the apertures in the locking members engaging the rear face of the bar after the locking member is released to prevent crushing or flattening out of the bent extensions 54 and 52 of the J-shaped springs under .heavy forward thumb pressures. The

These stop devices are constructed precisely like the corresponding stop devices shown in the other views, except that the J-shaped springs are formed integrally with the lower edges of the rear walls of the locking members of the stop devices.
The described construction wherein each stop device consists solely of two independent members, each formed of a single piece of sheet metal and having no positive connection therebetween, one of said members constituting the abutment or contact element and the other member constituting the adjusting and locking element of the stop device, affords a simple, light, and inexpensive stop device. It will be observed also that the stop devices are easily releasable and adjustable by finger pressure, and that the only part of a stop device that is flexed in releasing is the integral spring tongue.
The construction and arrangement of this integral spring tongue, shown and described is advantageous in that a narrow highly flexible tongue is provided, shaped and arranged to afford a spring of great resilience but of compact form andin compact relation with the other portions of the stop device. The construction and arrangement of the spring and the parts of the stop device are also such that spring pressure is so distributed as to prevent cocking of the abutment member on the bar when the locking member is pressed into releasing and adjusting position which would cause bindingof the abutment member on the stop bar greatly resisting or preventing adjustment of the stop device. The normal rearward cooking of the J-shaped Vspring relatively to the planes of the rear walls of the two members of the stop device allows full flexing of the spring without the spring striking the upper edge of the rear wall of the abutment member and, thereby lessening the resilient "force, exerted on said abutment member. i w
It will be observed that thenon-locking side arms46 and 58 of the two stop devices are at the inner sides of these two devices, i. e:
at the sides nearest the middle of the carriage, while the locking arms 47 and 59 are at the outer sides of the devices. By this arrangement the locking arm of each device is backed upV by the adjacent abutting side arm of the abutment member of the device so that it will not bend under stopping strains. By providing but one locking arm diiiiculty and expense of precision manufacture which would be required to provide for entrance offon the locking member constructed as shown and described is advantageous, however, in that the locking member is thus accurately guided in its movements both transversely and longitudinally of the stop bar, this nona locking arm being precluded from engaging in the notches of the bar at any time by the lateral extension or lug at its front end and acting to resist cocking of the locking and abutment members of the stop device when` the stop device comes in engagement with its cooperating stop on the carriage bed.
As the carriage approaches the end of its letter-feed travel from right to left for which the right hand margin controlling stop device on bar 18 is adjusted, the left hand edge" of contact portion 66 of said device engages the right hand edge of Contact head 39a of arm 39 of lever 34 and rocks said lever from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 3 against the pull of spring 36, where# upon lever 34 is arrested by the head of screw 25, thus stopping the carriage with line-locking arm 38 of lever 34 in its machine-locking position.y Upon return of the carriage from left to right, the right hand face of contact wall 48n of the left hand margin controlling stop device on bar 18 engages the straight left hand edge of stop arm 27 of gib 24 on the carriage bed and immediately arrests the carriage. The pendant portions a and 48"L of this stop device are made short as shown to permit the same to pass over head 391 of lever 34, while pendant portion 66 of the other stop device is adapted to pass behind stop arm 27. In a typewriting machine having a traveling carriage, the combination of a carriage stop carrying bar of rectangular cross-section having transverse notches in one face thereof, and a carriage stop mounted on and adjustable along said bar, said stop comprising an abutment member having a rigid yokelike body portion slidable along said bar and a locking member having a rigid yoke-like body portion embracing the body portion of the abutment member slidable along said bar and also slidable transversely of the bar perpendicular to the notched face of the bar into and out of engagement with the bar notches to lockthe stop against movement along the bar, the transverse parts of yoke-like body portions of the stop members being spaced and located at the opposite face of the bar from the notched bar face, and the transverse part `of the yoke-like body portion of the locking member being formed with an integral spring tongue bearing at its free end against a surface of the transverse part of the yoke-like body portion of the abutment lmember facing in a direction opposite to that in which the notched face of the b-ar faces, the yoke-like body portion of the abutment member having an intergral rigid contact part extending downward from the lower edge of one side part of said portion formovement against a cooperating stop and braced against impact thrusts by an integral lug which extends longitudinally of the bar from the lower edge of the other side part of said portion into engagement with said contact part, and further braced by a downward extension of the transverse part of said portion which forms with said contact part an integral angular pendant extension of said portion. In a typewriting machine having a traveling carriage, the combination of a margin stop carrying bar on the carriage of rectangular cross-section having transverse stop-locking notches in one face thereof, and a margin stop mounted on said bar and adjustable therealong, said stop comprising abutment and locking members each formeY from a single piece of sheet metal, said members having non-resilient body portions of yoke-like form each comprising a flat transverse wall parallel with the notched face of the bar and located at the opposite side of the bar from the notched face and parallel Hat side walls through registering apertures in which the bar extends, the body portion of the locking member embracing the body portion ofV the abutment member with the side walls contacting and the transverse walls spacedl apart, the apertures in the side walls of the abutment member being shaped to prevent transverse movement of said member relatively to the bar and the side walls thereof being too thick to enter the bar'V notches, the apertures in the side walls of the locking member being shaped to permit transverse movement of the body portion of said member transversely of the bar only in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the notched bar face, the free end of one of the side walls of the locking member being adapted to enter the bar notches andthe free end of the other side wall of the locking member being bent outward tov form an abutment wider than the bar notches adapted to bear against the notched bar face when the firstmentioned wall engages in a bar notch, the non-locking side wall being located atv the leading side of the stop, and the transverse wall of the locking member being provided with an integral spring tongue bearing against the adjacent face of the transverse wall of the abutment member between the side walls of the locking member` y 7.
