tain new and useful Improvements in Computing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to computing machines.
The main object of the invention, gen
erally stated, is to provide means for preventing urnecessary traveling movements of a cross truck or jumping totalizer withoutrendering it ineflective to move at proper intervals in the operation of the machine, thereby reducing the wear, strain and noise incidental to such unnecessary movements,
and decreasing liability of injury 'to the machine.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the 'features of construction, arrange ments of parts and combinations of devices set forth in the following description and particularly pointed out in the'appended claims.

I have shown my invention embodied in a combined typewriting and computing machine similar to that shown in the. atent to John C. Wahl, No. 1,270,411 dated June 25, 1918, except that the computing nism, substantially like that shown in said patent, is applied to a; more modern style of typewriting machine; iu'the main similar to the No. 12 Remington machine. However, Ihave shown only-so much of said combined machine as is necessary to arrive at an understanding of my invention in its embodiment therein. It should be understood, howener, that} the invention is not restricted to its inclusion in such a machine, but. may be employed wherever found. available in different makes of computing machines.
The present invention is in the nature of an improvement on the structure disclosed in my application Sr; No. 641,807 filed May 28, 1923, which shows the mechanism of the said Wahl patent. embodied in a Remington accounting machine and equipped with, detent mechanism for the same general purpose as the present invention- The construction disclosed in said Wahl patent and that embodied in the Remington accounting machine each includes a Remmgton typewriting machine, the paper carriage of which has connected thereto a main calculator carriage or truck on which a series of so-called vertical totalizers is mounted. A cross or jumping totalizer is carried by a cross truck. Automatically operating means are employed for intermittently picking up and releasing the cross truck, thus alternately moving the latter forward and allowing it to return tonormal position during the travel of the typewriter and main carriage or truck across the machine in one direction. These forward and back movements of the cross carriage are sometimes unnecessary, as for example when theoperator desires to skip computing columns without writing therein, and IGSlllhln unduewear,
strain, noise and increased liability of injury incidental to such unnecessary movements. By my present invention 11 overcome these difficulties by rendering the release of the cross carriage, by the automatically operatcarriage to normal position. I accomplish this by automatically throwing a detent into engagement with the cross carriage. This detent is controlled by the carriage release key which also is effective to release the main carriage from control of its escapement mechanism so that the movement of the detent is incidental to therelease of the carriage by said key.
The typewriting machine to which the calculating mechanism is applied as an ated pick-up mechanism, inelfective to bring about a jumpingback or return of the cross and moves upwardly and rearwardly to strike against the front face of a plate 11 supported by a platen frame 12 mounted in the typewriter carriage 13. The lever 3 of each numeral key also is connected through a pull wire 14 with devices of the actuator of the computing mechanism, as fully shown and described in said hereinbefore mentioned Wahl patent.
The heel of each type bar 8 is provided with a contact 15 which coacts with a segment-a1 universal bar 16 as a type bar approaches the printing position. and moves said universal bar rearwardly to actuate the dog rocker and thus afford a letter space movement of the typewriter carriage. Thus, the universal bar has rearwardly projecting arms 17 connected to arms 18 which extend upwardly from a rock shaft 19. A centrally disposed arm 20 on the rock shaft is slotted to receive the forward forked end of a link 21, said fork straddling a pin 22 on the arm 20 which crosses the slot in the upper end thereof. The rear end ofthe link 21 is operatively connected with a dog rocker 23 pivoted at 24 and carrying feed dogs 25 and 26. These dogs coact with an escapement wheel 27 operatively connected with a feed pinion 28 with which a feed rack 29 meshes. The feed rack is mounted on arms 30 pivoted at 31 on the spring driven typewriter carria e 13.,
In order to release t e carriage from control of its escapement mechanism I have substituted for the means ordinarily employed in the No. 12 Remington machine for example, the release keys and connections shown in the accompanying drawlugs although from certain aspects of my Invention the character of the release keys and their connections are immaterial.
As shown in the drawings there are two carriage release keys 32 and 33 at opposite sides of the carriage. The key 33 is bent to the right from a lever 34 of the first order which carries it, said lever being fulcrumed on a shouldered pivot screw 35. The shouldered portion of this-screw 39 passes through a' slot 41 in the lever 34 and limits the pivotal movement thereof in both directions while the shoulder on the screw bears against the washer. The lower end of the lever 34 is pivoted at 42 to the forward end of a rearwardly extending link 43. This link is pivoted at its rear end 44to the depending arm of a three-arm lever 45 pivoted by its upper arm at 46 to the carriage. The rearwardly extending arm 47 of this lever extends beneath the feed rack 29 at one end thereof and is adapted to lift the rack out of engagement with its feed pinion 28 When the key 33 is depressed, thereby freeing the carriage from control of its escapement mechanism. A spring36 is coiled around the washer 36 and bears at one end against the bracket 37 and at its opposite end against the lower edge of the lever 34. This spring returns the key 33 and the parts directly connected therewith to normal position; a spring 48 causin a re-engagement of the feed rack 29 wit the feed inion.
The bracket 37 1s provided with bearings 49 and 50 in which the usual spring returned rock-shaft 51 of the line spacing mecha-' nism is supported for rocking movement by the line'spacing handle 52.
A somewhat similar train or releasing connections to those described above are provided at the lefthand side of the machine between the finger key 32 and the feed rack, and the description of one in the Corresponding parts in the two trains will therefore be indicated by the same reference numerals. The cast bracket 53 at the left-hand side of the carriage is arranged outside of the companion lever 34 instead of between it and the carriage as in the previously described construction, and said lever 34 turns on a hollow shouldered stud 53 on the bracket 53 and through which stud a securing screw 35 passes to hold the bracket on the carriage.
It has been pointed out that the computingmechanism disclosed herein is like that shown and described in the above mentioned Wahl patent, and it will be unnecessary for the purpose of my invention to illustrate or describe such mechanism in detail except in so far as concerns parts thereof which are necessary to an understanding of the present invention. Therefore the illustration has been materially simplified by omitting many parts of the machine disclosed in said Wahl patent.
The main truck for the calculating mechanism comprises a bar 54 mounted and connected to the typewriter carriage to travel therewith. "In addition to the vertical totalizers referred to, the machine is provided with a crossorjumping totalizer 66 which accumulates the sum registered on the series of vertical totalizers. This totalizer 66 is like the vertical totalizersv and includes gear wheels 67 and a .series of number wheels 68. The wheels 67 are brought successively into mesh with a master wheel 69, turned by the actuator at each depression. of a numeral key 2 the same extent that the masterwheel -is turned. The cross totalizer is carried by a cross truck which in the present instance is constructed and mounted like that disclosed in my Patent No. 1,464,095 dated Au 7,

In the hereinbefore mentioned Wahl patent, automatically operating connecting means between each vertical totalizer and the cross truck 'or carriage are provided for intermittently picking up the cross carriage and releasing it for alternate forward and back movements during a single travel of the main truck or carriage in one direction.
' In said patented construction the right-hand side plate of each of the vertical totalizers is formed with a fixed engaging projection 73 which is adapted to coact with an upwardly extending hook-like projection or tooth 74 on a so-called pick-up beam 75. A laterally projecting headed screw stud 76, fixed to the beam 75, is received inv a short horizontally disposed bearing slot 77 in a bracket arm 78 secured to the cross truck bar 70. This construction enables the beam to re-' ceive a pivotal movement on the bracket'and also aflords a limitedrelative sliding movement between the two against the action of a contractile bufi'er spring 79, connected at one end to a pin 80, carried by the beam 7 5 and. at its other end to the bracket arm 78. It will be observed that the force of the spring is directed in a line above the stud 76, and therefore tends to turn the. beam around the center of said stud and elevate the inner hook-carrying end of the beam, and also tends to maintain the stud seated at the right-hand end of the slot 77. A forwardly projecting pin 81 extends from the pick-up beam 75 and projects through anenlarged openingvin a ick-up guard or looking beam 82, to be hereinafter more fully described. The pin 81 after passing through the opening in the pick-up guard, extends into a slot 83 in a fixed plate 84. A part of the lower wall of the slot-83 is formed by the upper edge of an auxiliary plate adapted to be adjusted along the plate 84 and secured in place thereon by screws 86. The upper edge of the plate 85 has a depression 87 therein which when the parts are in the normal position, is beneath the pin 81, This permits usual tabulator keys and is moved by hand after the carriage release keys the pin 81 to move down into the depression tion of the slot 83 is formed with a cam 88 with which the pin 81 coacts -as the pick-up of the pin 81, and the walls of the.
beam is carried along with the main carriage by a projection 73 on a vertical totalizer. The efi'ect of engaging the cam 88 is to move the pin 81 and the hook carrying end of the beam down, thus disengaging the hook 74 from the totalizer and enabling the cross truck 70 and the beam to be returned to the right independently of the main truck or carriage. A spring 89 is effective to bring about this independent return movement of the cross truck and the parts connected therewith. Said spring'is connected at one end to a pin 90 on the stationary frame plate 91, and at the other end to a pin 92 on the truck 70; the intermediate looped ortion of the spring passing around .a pul ey 93 on the supporting frame. The cross truck when released as described will be moved rapidly to the right by the spring 89 until arrested by the bar 94 (adjustably secured to the cross truck) striking a member 95 and forcing it against the fixed frame plate 96.
The I pick-up guard 82, hereinbefore referred to, is provided to automatically coact at its free end with. the right-hand face of the projection or pick-up lug 7 3 on a vertical totalizer when the hook or tooth 74 engages the opposite side of said projection, the two thus constituting an interlock that prevents a relative movement between the main truck and cross-truck in either direction of the travel.
A more complete detail description of the construction and operation of thepick-up guard is deemed unnecessary, except to point out that it is automatically actuated and opcrates in conjunction with the pick-up beam to insure the proper positioning of the cross truck in a decimal position corresponding to that of a vertical totalizer when the latter is in the computing zone.
The computing mechanism as thus far described, except as specifically indicated, is the same or substantially the same as that disclosed in the Wahl patent referred to above.
It will be understood that ordinarily in the operation of the machine, as a vertical totalizer approaches the computing zone to bring a wheel 63 thereof into mesh with the master wheel 65, the pick-up beam 7 5 will be engaged by the projection 73 on a vertical totalizer, causing the cross truck and cross totalizer 66 to travel in unison with the main truck or carriage. As said connected vertical totalizer passes out of the computing zone and beyond the master wheel the pin 81 reaches the cam 88 and releases the pickup beam, thereby enabling the cross-truck and totalizer 66 to be returned to the right by the spring 89. ward and back movement of the cross truck and totalizer takes place as each Vertical totalizer passes through the computing zone, even when no actuation of the vertical totalizer is effected. This, therefore, results in unnecessary forward and back movements of the cross truck and totalizer, with consequent unnecessary wear, liability of injury thereto, and the production of a clattering noise, especially under the rapid movements of the main carriage by hand or under control of the tabulator. Let it be assumed, for example, that the main carriage is in the extreme right-hand position, and the operator desires to operate only the last or fifth totalizer 62. This may be brought about by depressing either of the carriage release keys 32 or 33 and moving the carriage to the proper position by hand, as is usually the case. The consequence ordinarily of moving the main carriage in the manner described is to alternately pick up and release the cross This intermittent for' truck for free return movement as each ver-- tical totalizer passes through the computing zone, there being eight unnecessary forward and back movements of the'cross truck in the example specified. Of course, when more vertical totalizers are employed, and as many as thirty are sometimes used, there is apt to be a greater number of unnecessary forward and back movements of the cross truck, and a consequent increased clattering noise and liability of injury.
In accordance with my present invention I overcome these difficulties, and provide improved means that are automatically actuated at each operation of a carriage release key to hold the cross-truck against return movement to its normal position. The crosstruck is thus held so long as pressure is maintained on the release key, and until the main carriage has been positioned to bring the proper vertical totalizer, say 62, in proper position to receive a registration therein. The operator then releases the depressed release key and the pick-up mechanism is then effective to carry the cross truck in unison with the main truck and bring about an automatic return of the cross truck when the totalizer 62 passes out of the computing zone, thus causing the cross truck to make one forward and one backward movement instead of ten, as would ordinarily be th case in the example given.
In the present construction the cross truck is provided with a bracket 97 adjustably secured to said truck by screws 98 which pass through elongated openings in the foot piece of said bracket. Projecting up from the foot piece of the bracket is an engaging projection 99. A lever 100 of the first order, shown in detail in Fig. .3, is provided at one end with an integral detent or hook-like engaging member 101, whereas the opposite end of the lever is provided with an antifriction roller 102. The lever, intermediate its ends, is provided with a bearing sleeve 103 which, as shown clearly in Fig. 4, is mounted on the enlarged portion 104 of a headed screw 105 received at its threaded end in the usual main fixed supporting bar 106 of the computing attachment. The screw '105 is a special screw which replaces a screw usually employed at this point to hold the member 107- on the supporting bar. It will be seen from this figure that the detentcarrying arm of the lever 100 is arranged above the engaging member 99 and that the relation of the parts is such that when the cross truck is in its advanced position, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 4, and the detent is depressed, it will engage said member 99 and hold the truck a ainstreturn movement until the detent is re eased.
The means by which the detent is. confrolled for the purpose stated are as folows:
A contractile spring 108 is fastened at one end to the detent-carrying arm of the lever' 100 and tends to turn said lever clockwise and bring the detent into effective position.
5 The lower end of the spring may be anchored at a suitable point; in the. present instance to a pin 109 secured to the stationary frame plate 91. Mounted on the typewriter carriage directly above the anti-friction roller 102 and co-acting therewith, is a controlling member 110 in plate that extends substantially throughout the length of the carriage, so that it may coact with said roller 102 at any point in the travel of said carriage. This bar is mounted to turn on its longitudinal axis by being fixed at its front edge portion to a parallel rock shaft 111. Said shaft is mounted to turn in bearings 112 in the brackets 37 and 53; the shaft at its right-hand end extend-' ing through and beyond the bracket 37. This end of the shaft has a crank arm 113 secured thereto, the free end of which extends up into the path of'the release .key 33 as the latter is depressed. The opposite end portion of the shaft has a corresponding crank arm 114 secured thereto, said arm extending into the path of the release key 32. The upward motion of the arm 114 is limited by a stop pin'115 projecting inwardly from the bracket 53 into the path of said arm. A spring 116 is coiled around the shaft 111. and bears at one end against the pin 115 and at the other end against the arm 114. The force of this spring tends to turn the rock shaft 111, bring the arm 114 against the pin 115 and turn the bar 110 down. The power of this spring is suflicient to overcome the power ofthe spring 108 and normally maintain the detent 101 out of the path of the engaging member 99 on the cross truck. When, however, the operator depresses either release key 32 or it will coact with the associated crank 6 arm and rock the shaft 111 against the force of its spring 116. This rocks the bar 110 up and the roller 102 bearing against-said bar will follow it under the action of the spring 108. The effect of this is to lower the beveled edge of the detent 101 into the path of travel of the engaging member 99 on the cross truck. The carriage having been released the operator moves it. to the left, and as the first vertical totalizer, say 58, a proaches 55 the computing zone the pick-up l said totalizer will engage the pick-u beam and cause the cross truck to be move to the left with the main carriage. The cross truck continues to move with the main car- 90 riage until the pin 81 has been fully depressed by the cam 88' to release the pickup beam from the engaged lug 73 to permit anindependent return movement of the cross truck to normal position. This overthrow is relied upon to bring a out an enga ement between the detent 101 and the mem ment for a nice timing of the parts that the member 99 is made adjustable. The purpose in engagingthe detent by an overthrow of the cross truck as stated, is to be assured in every instance that the engaging tooth 74 on the pick-up beam is moved and held down out of the path of the lugs 73 on the vertical totalizers when the cross truck is locked or held against return movement, otherwise. injury to the machine might result. For example, if the detent 101 should hold the cfioss truck against return movement when t e .88, t pick-up beam would be maintained in the path of the pro'ections 73 and injyrious results might follow should the operatorattempt to return the main carriage at this time. By relying on, a slight overthrow of the cross truck to bring aboutan engagement of the detent 101 this dilficulty is overcome. The operator having advanced the main carriage as stated, and locked the cross truck in its advanced position, continues to advance the main carriage-until, say, the last totalizer 62 is positioned to receive a registration therein as indicated, for example, in Fig. 2. The operator now releases the depressed key 32 or 33, reestablishing connection with the in 81 is, say, half-way down the cam en the engaging projection 74 on the er 99, and it is due to this requireescape 'nent mechanism to hold the main the spring 116 and the spring 108 causes the end of the lever 100 carryin the roller 102 to followup the bar and re ease the detent from engagement with the cross truck. In the present instance I have enclosed various parts of the computing mechanism in housings. Thus man parts of the machine that were formerly exposed are in- 117, 118, 119and 120 preferably of cast metal and to which are attached by screws 121 sheet metal cover plates 122 and 123. The construction presents a neater appearance than heretofore and better protects the working parts against interference, injury and the admission of dust thereto.
In order to make the machine as a whole more compact than heretofore I have provided a special top plate 124 for the'type writing machine which does not extend as far forward as in said prior machines. I also have provided a special detachable corner post 125 at the right-hand forward corner of the typewriting machine, the up: right portion of which post is off-set rearwardly beyond the point which the corre spondlng corner post formerly occupied.
a This enables me to reduce the fore-and-aft dimensions of the machine at this portion thereof where the cross foot mechanism is situated.
The carriage release keys and their connections disclosed herein enable such keys to be mounted furtherforward and at a higher elevationthan heretofore, where they are more readily accessible to the operator.
Thebrackets 37 and 53 with the parts carried thereby not only provide for a firmer and more rigid connection of the parts with the frame of the typewriter carriage but facilitate the addition of the computmg mechanism to the typewriter as an attachment to the latter.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a computing machine, the combination of' a main carriage or truck, a cross truck, pick-up mechanism for causing the cross truck to travel in unison with the main truck and to return relatively thereto to normal position, and key controlled engaging means comprising two cooperative members one on t 1e cross truck and the other controlled by said key, the construction and arrangement of the parts being such that the said two engaging members are brought into engagement by an overthrow of the cross truck after it is released for relative return movement.
2. In a computing machine, the combination of a main carriage, a cross totalizer, automatically operating pick-up mechanism for causing said cross. totalizer to move in "unison with the main carriage and to return to normal position independently thereof, and key controlled engaging means for holding said cross totalizer against re turn movement to normal position when it is released by its pick-up mechanism, the
construction and arrangement of the parts being such that said engaging means are brought intov engagement only by an overthrow of the cross totalizer after it is released by the pick-up mechanism.
3. In a computing machine, the combination of a. main carriage, a release key therefor, a umping carriage, means for effect- ,ing forward and backward travel of the 1 mechanism for effecting a movement of the jumping carriage in unison with said main carriage and for permitting an independent return movement of the jumping carriage to normal position, said pick-up mechanism comprising pick-up lugs on the main carriage, a pick-up beam, and means for automatically disconnecting the beam from the engaged lug to permit the independent return movement of the jumping carriage; and a'key controlled detent operative to prevent an independent return movement to normal position of said jumping carriage, the construction and arrangement of the parts being such that the detent when in effective osition engages the jumping carriage on y by an overthrow of the latter after the pick-up beam has been disengaged from a lug. e
5. controlling member carried by the carriage and controlled by said release key, a' detent carried by a fixed part of the machine and controlled by said contrbllin member, a jumping totalizer, automatica 1y operating means for moving said totalizer forward and backward durin the travel of the car-, riage in one directlon, and means operatively. connected with said totalizer and with whichsaid detent co-acts to prevent a'return movement of the jumping totalizer to normal position when the release key is maintained depressed, the construction and arrangementof the parts being such that said detent when in efiective position is engaged only by an overthrow of the jumping totalizer and after it is freed for independent backward movement to normal posltion.
7. 14. 15. In a computing machine, the combination of a carriage, a release key therefor, a rock shaft controlled thereby,-a controlling platecarried by said rock shaft and extending substantially throughout the width of the carriage, a detent carried by a fixed part of the machine and controlled by said controlling plate at any point in the travel of the carriage, a jumpingtotalizer, automatically operating means for moving the totalizer forward and backward during the travel of the carriage'in one direction, and means operatively connected with said jumping totalizer and with which said detent co-acts to prevent a return movement of said totalizer to normal position so long as said release key is maintained depressed.
16. In a computing machine, the com I bination of a carriage carrying a plurality of vertical totalizers, a release key carried by said carriage; a jumping totalizer; automatically operating means for picking up the jumping totalizer as a vertical totalizer approaches the computing zone and for releasing it for return movement to normal position when the computing zone is passed; and means controlled by said release key for preventing a return movement of said jumping totalizer, said last mentioned means comprising a rock shaft carried by the carriage and controlled by said release key, a plate-like controllin member carried by said shaft and extendlng substantially throughout the width of the carriage, a detent carried by a fixed part of the machine and controlled by said controlling member, and an engaging member that moves with the jumping totalizer and with which the detent is adapted to coact to prevent a return movement of the carriage to normal position. m f

In a computing machine, the combination of a carriage carrying a plurality of vertical totalizers; a release key carried by said carriage; a cross truck; a 'umping totalizer carried by said .cross truc automatically operating means for picking up said cross truck as a vertical totalizer approaches the computing zone and for releasing it for return movement when the comuting zone is passed; and means controlled y said release key for preventing a return movement of said cross truck to normal position, said last mentioned means comprising a plate-like controllin member ivoted to turn on its longitudina axis on t e carriage and controlled by said release key, a lever mounted on a fixed part of the machine and with which said controlling member co-acts at any point in the. travel of the carriage, a detent carried by and formed as a part of said' lever and controlled in its movement into and out of effective position by said controlling member, and an adjustable engaging pro ection on said cross truck and with which said detent is adapted to co-act to revent a return movement of the cross true to normal position. v
