This invention relates to tally or checking apparatus.
This invention has utility when used as a plus and minus counting apparatus readily selectively reset in any desired relationship.

From a source as to which checking is 'de-- sired, as a machine for turning out a product., there may be connected, as herein disclosed, belt 1 as a slip drive for pulley 2 25 on shaft 3 as mounted in cabinet or housing 4. This shaft 3 protrudes into the housing 4 and there carries linger or cam 5, which 1n the rotation of the shaft 3 strikes arm 6 loosely pivoted on shaft 7 parallel to the shaft 3. This arm 6 is a lever carrying gravity pawl or dog 8 for coacting with the ratchet wheel 9, also mounted loosely on the shaft 7. The arm 6 is normally held against the shaft 3 or its cam 5 by spring 10. Accordingly, continuous rotation of the shaft 3 is effective as a speed reduction drive for this ratchet 9 as fixed with disk 11. This disk 11 is provided With an annular series of openings 12 herein shown as ten in number in responding to the decimal notation as herein adopted for this tally device.
Retarder spring 13 about sleeve portion 1.4 from the ratchet 9, between such ratchet 9 and the disk 11, serves as a brake to hold against over winding of this shaft. Stud or projection 15 from disk 16 fixed with notation carrier 17 may enter a selected opening 1.2 in the unit counter disk 11. This notation or counter carrier 17 is provided with a knurled portion 18. A spring 19 about 1925. serial No. 32,012.
the shaft 7 between this unit notation carrier and tens 'counter disk 20 serves normally to thrust this counter carrier 17 to have this projection 15 in clutching coaction with the selected seat 12 in the unit disk 11, thereby 55 providing a clutch connection which may be readily disturbed. but as connected is effective for holding the counter 17 for rotation simultaneously with the unit disk 11.
The disk 16 is provided with a single tooth 60 21 coacting for engagement With teeth 22 of follower disk 23 on shaft 24 parallel to the shaft 7. This transmission drive is a star wheel type of drive between engagements of the toot-h 21 with the teeth 22 on the disk 23. The rim of the disk 16 coacts with seat portion 25 between a pair of teeth 22 to hold the disk 23 from rotation. This intermittent transmission means or step-by-step speed reduction drive is effective from this disk 23 through gear 26 to drive tens counting disk gear 20 on the shaft 7. There is like clutch connection for succeeding notation disclosure and disturbance as between the unit disk 11 and its counter carrier 17. This tens counter carrier 27 is in axial alignment with the unit counter carrier 17.
In the disclosure as herein these counters extend to a series including hundreds counter carrier 28 and thousands counter carrier 29. The transmission by way of the counter shaft 24 at a speed reduction ot a ten to one ratio is similarly followed. The clutch combination at each counter disk carrier for the counter disk permits independent setting of each of these disks independently of running the carrier through for a new setting. This means that the operator of the machine may set the counter for any desired number as 437 or 9,628. or any number within the range ot the machine. Having set the machine for such counting. there may be a contact 30 on the carrier 29 to eoact with terminal 31 and through leads 32, 33, therefrom operating alarm signal 34 thus to apprise the machine operator that the quota as selected has been completed subtractively from the selected number. The device is one to which access is readily obtained for making these adjustments by opening lid 35. This lid 35 is provided with window 36 and also with rake 37 which in closed position has its fingers coact between the shiftable notation or counter carriers 17 and the succeeding counter disks so that no disturbance of the cabinet 4 may bring about any unclutching of the disks from their set driving relation after the lid 35 has been closed.
Additionally, from the shaft 3, through cam 38, there is operation of finger 39 for normal totalizing device 40. This totalizing device is a continuous transmission which is not disturbed, but is one giving totals as an indication of the total out-put of themachine.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A tally device comprising a housing having a movable section, a shaft adjacent to said section, a gear disk on said shaft, a notation carrier also mounted on said shaft, clutch means between the disk and the carrier, and spring means normally holding said disk and said carrier in clutched engagement; said movable housing-section having means fixed thereto and movable therewith to prevent unclutching of the carrier from the disk.
2. A tally device comprising a housing having a movable section, a shaft adjacent to said section, a gear and a notation carrier mounted in axial relation on said shaft, clutch means between the gear and the carrier, and spring means normally holding said gear and said carrier in clutch engagement; said movable housing section having means xed thereto and movable therewith to prevent unclutching of the carrier from the gearing.
3. A tally device comprising a housing having a removable section, a shaft adjacent to said section, a gear and a notation carrier mounted in axial relation on said shaft, clutch means between the gear and the carrier, and spring means normally holding said gear and said carrier in clutched engagement; said movable housing section having an inwardly extending projection fixed thereto and movable'therewith to prevent unclutching of the carrier from the gear.
4. A tally device comprising a housing, a shaft in the housing, a gear and a notation carrier mounted in axial relation on said shaft, clutch means between the gear and carrier, and holding means normally retaining said gear and carrier in clutched engagement, said holding means including a helical compression means about the shaft maintaining tally operation unity at all times, said carrier being releasable for manual rotation independently of the gear by axially shifting of the carrier away from its gear against the resistance of said spring for resetting adjustment between the disk and carrier, said carrier having a tally tooth fixed therewith against disturbance of relation with the n0- tation. f
5. A talley device comprising a housing, a shaft in said housing, a gear disk on said shaft, a notation carrier for the disk, clutch means between the disk and carrier pair in providing an operative tally unit, and a compression helical spring about the shaft normally holding the disk and carrier in clutched engagement for tally operation, said carrier being axially shiftable relatively to its gear in freeing the carrier for independent manual rotation, said carrier having a talley tooth fixed therewith against disturbance of relation with the notation.
6. In a counter, a counter wheel; and first and second members coaxial therewith at opposite sides thereof, the first member driving the wheel, gearing from the wheel for driving the second member; said wheel being normally spaced from the second member and axially movable into and out of driving engagement from the first member, and as movable out of driving engagement from the first member disconnecting said gearing to the second member.
7. A unit assembly comprising a counter wheel; `a, driving gear therefor at one side thereof; a driven member at the other side thereof; said wheel being normally spaced apart from said driven member; means normally establishing a positive non-yielding drive connectionbetween said driving gear and wheel, said means being releasable by movement of the wheel toward the driven member; and means establishing a speed reduction drive connection between the wheel and tho driven member in any angular shifted position of the wheel into drive connection with the driving gear.
