ever, that the'apparatus shown herein is for-r the purpose of illustration only and that the following method is not limited to the use of such apparatus.
With my method, a strip of stock having a section corresponding to that of the sidev ring of a tire carrying rim of the solid base type and having a length suiiicient to produce a plurality of side rings is inserted between the forming rolls 1, 2 and 3 of a usual forming roll machine, such as a pyramid roll machine, shown in Figures 1 and 2. These rolls are arranged to bend the stock with a constant radius of curvature, as long as the stock is completely between the rolls. The stock, after passing between the rolls, is deflected out of the path of `the un'ormed stock by a suitable delector upon the machine, which compels the stock to assume a spiral form or more specifically a yhelical form. The extent to which the stock is deflected is preferably within the limits of elasticity of the stock. After the strip has been coiled it is then severed. However, before` severing the convo'lutions of the coiled strip, I size the same and further so position them that they are severed to accurate length. For carrying out these steps I may use the machine shown in 'Figures 3 and 4, in which is the holder or 9, which latter is actuated by a piston in the air cylinder 10. The holder is mounted upon the bolster plate of the machine so that it may be moved toward or away from the separating means G, which latter is in the nature holder toward the 'wedge-shaped member. This wedgesha-ped member raises the uppermostconvolution to a position to be-engaged by the 'jaws 8 of the sizing means, which latter are then actuated to size the uppermost convolution and to make the .same circularly true. `The holder with the'colled strip there- Voninay then bev rotated to a position to 'sever the uppermost endportion of the coiled strip bymea'ns ,of the` punch 1ll and die 12, the lat-'I ter 'being .stationary with the wedge-shaped member and the former being vertically movable ina direction parallel to the axes ofthe. holder and coiled strip.
