Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in adjustable forms for making paper boxes and has for its object to provide a form of this description in which a plate of given dimensions is used for attachment to the reciprocating head of the machine and upon which the adjustable members are secured.
A further object of the invention is to provide for the various adjustments necessary to produce boXes'of various sizes and to accomplish these adjustments in a simple and effective manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide for the vertical adjustment of the form relative to the head of the machine by which it is carried so as to facilitate the making of boxes of different depths without the luse of fillers.
A still further object ofthe invention is to provide an adjustable platen for coacting with the adjustable presser plate.
Vith these and other ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements 'hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, we will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which :d

In carrying out our invent-ion as herein embodied, 15 represents asuspension plate upon the center of which is secured the block 16 byV means of the screws 17 over the central opening' 18 formed in the plate and this block lhas an opening 19 therein coinciding with the opening 18 for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
2O represents the suspension rods which are secured in the holes 21 formed in the block 16 and these rods are adapted 'to be attached to the head of the box making machine in any known manner as indicated in Fig. 1 of the. patent to ,Smith and Reifsynder, No. 1,27 4,801, dated August 6, 1918.
22 represents the adjustable form which we .pre-fer to make of three layers of metal and this form iscomposed of the angular sections 23 and 24, the sections 23 having their central layers shortened so as to form the grooves 25 while the sections 24 4have their central layers extended so as to form the tongues 26, thus permitting the extension or contraction of these sections relativeto each other so as to adjust thecompleted form to the dimensions desired, as will be readily understood. These .sections are held in any adjustment bythe screws 27 which pass through the two upper`r layers Vof the4 sections and are threaded into lowerlayers ,as indicated at the right of Fig. 2.
Projecting from the central layers of each kof thecorner sections are the lugsA 28 slotted as at 29 for the passage of the bolts 30 which` bolts also pass through the slots 81 formed in the suspension ,plate and this arrangement provides for accommodating the adjustment of the form which is accomplished by loosening-.the bolts 3() while the form isbeing adj usted to any given dimensions and thereafter tightening up upon these bolts so as to bind the lugs against the suspension plate and thus hold the entire device as a unitary structure.
represents the presser plate to which the stem 33 is secured by the screws 34 passing through the 'flange 35 of said stem and this stem is internally threaded tor the reception ot the threaded suspension rod 3G, the latter being held in any adjustment relative to the stem by the jam nut 37. The upper end of the suspension rod 36 is removably mounted in the plunger of the box-making machine as usual. This presser plate has formed therein the slots 38 through which the set screws 39 pass, said screws being secured in the extension wings 40 thereby providing for the adjustment of said wings and the securement thereof in any adjustment, by the nuts 39a run upon said screws.
The extension wings 40 are beveled as indicated at 42 so that when these wings are contracted to the smallest dimensions these beveled edges will abutt and when adjusted to larger dimensions. as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 8, only a relatively small gap will be formed between these beveled edges.
In Fig. l2, we have shown the relation of the presser plate to the adjustable form when the two are mounted upon a box maling machine, and when so mounted in operation, the uninished boxes one after the other are passed upward over the presser plate so that the downward movement et the rod 3G will carry the bottom of the box into contact with the platen 43 of the machine and during thismovement, the paper for covering and iinishing the box having previously been attached to the under side thereof will be turned upward and attached to the sides ol the box by the action of the rolls of the machine, said rolls not heing here shown as they are parts ot the standard box making machines.
After the box has been seated upon the platen, the bending lingers oit the machine turn in the upper edges of the paper over the upper' edges ot the box and after the withdrawal of these fingers, the adjustable form passes into this box turning the paper downward and dwelling a suilicient length of time to permit the pressure blocks of the machine to exert sulicient pressure against the box, using the adjustable form as an anvil to glue these downturned edges ol the paper to the inside ot the box.
Heretotore when boxes of certain depths had to be made, a spacing block has been used to make up for the increased depth in the box, but this we overcome by the adj ustability of the presser plate through the medium oit' the rod 36 threaded into the stem 33 since by this arrangement, it is only necessary to baclr oil the rod to the distance necessary to accommodate the presser plate to the desired depth of box and then set up the nut 37 to hold the presser plate in this adjustment.
To provide for the convenient handling of boxes ot considerable depth, we provide the angle wings 44 using lour of such wings to take the place oit the extension wings 40. Each of these angle wings 44 has a shank 45 to which are secured the threaded studs 4G for passing through the slots 38, thus securing the angle wings in the saine relative position to the presser foot as the extension wings are secured by tightening up upon the nuts 39 run upon said studs.
These angle wings supply the backing against which the sides of the box are forced when the rolls are acting upon said box in applying the linished paper thereto, as will be readily understood.
In order that the platen 43 may be adjustable to follow the adjustments of the presser plate, a bed plate 45a is secured to the spindle 46 of the machine which is normally held up by the spring 47 in the usual manner and this bed plate has superimposed thereon the slide plates 48, each having a stud 49 secured thereon. rIhese studs pass through the rectangular openings 50 formed in the bed plate and have relatively large washers 5l thereon so that when the slide plates are adjusted to give the platen the desired dimensions, the setting up of the thumb nuts 52 will firmly hold these slide plates against displacement, as will be readily understood.
ln the manufacture of boxes, our improved adjustable form is oi. great advantage in that it is rigidly supported upon a single suspension plate and from the further 'fact that in any adjustment no through and through break occurs on any side ot the adjustable lorm, thus providing tull and ample support to the box while being operated upon by the machine Ytrom the further fact that the presser plate by having the extension wings thereon may be adjusted to any size box being made and from the still further tact that provision is made for the various depth ol boxes by the angle wings. Also one of the principle advantages oi our invention is the adjustability of the presser plate relative to the adjustable form whereby the use of spacers are avoided. And further the adjustable platen provides for expanding this plat-- en to correspond to the adjustments of the presser plate.
Of course we do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown, as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit oi our invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and usetul `is l. In a device of the character described, an expansion form con'iprising fou` angle sections, certain ot said sections having tongues and certain of said sections having grooves into which said tongues lit, the tongues being slotted for the passage of clamping screws and a suspension plate to which the angle sections are adjustably secured.
2. rIhe herein described combination of an adjustable form for paper boisr making machines, of a presser foot, and means for so mounting said presser foot upon the machine as to make it adjustable relative to the form.
3. In a form for paper box making machines, a suspension plate, an attachment block mounted upon said suspension plate, means carried by the block for attaching it to the box machine, an adjustable form secured to said plate, an internally threaded stem adapted to pass through a central opening in said block, a rod threaded into the stem, a presser foot secured to the lower end of the stem, and means for adjusting said presser plate.
4. -In combination With an eXpa-nsible adjustable form of the character described, a
presser plate so mounted as to coact with said form and Wings adjustably secured to the presser plate.
5. In combination With an adjustable presser plate of a machine of the character described, an adjustable platen comprising a bed plate, adjustable sides superimposed upon the bed plate and means for holding said slides in any adjustment.
6. In al machine of the character described, a platen comprising a bed plate mounted upon a spring cushioned spindle, and having relatively large openings therethrough; slide plates iitted against the upper surface of the bed plate; a threaded stud secured to each of said slideplates, said studs projectingthrough said openings; Washers carried by the studs and partially covering said openings; and thumb nuts threaded upon said studs for binding the Washers and slide plate against the bed plate.
