Description

Oct. 6, 1931. H. FRENCK 6,
DROP CATCHING DEVICE FOR UMBRELLAS Filed June 17, 1930 Patented Set. 6, 1931 rrs sTATEs PATENT QEIQE DROP CATCHING DEVICE FOR UIVIBRELLAS Application file-t1 June 17, 1930, Serial No. 461,782, and in Germany May 6, 1929.
The feature of the invention consists in that on the umbrella cover a drip cover of porous material, such as sponge rubber is permanently or removably arranged around the outer edge of the umbrella cover in such a manner, that it covers or surrounds the outer edge of the umbrella cover and sucks up the water running off the umbrella cover, sleeves consisting of the same porous material being 19 arranged on the drip cover and accommodate the rib points, a small drip cover of porous material being permanently or removably fastened on the umbrella cover at the aperture for the umbrella stick.
This arrangement enables a drip cover to be arranged or fastened on the umbrella without changing the form or shape of the umbrella, said cover absorbing the water running off the cover and thereby preventing the dripping or flowing off of the water, so that the user of the umbrella need not pay attention to the position in which the umbrella is held, but can devote his entire attention to the rain and the way in which he walks.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 shows an open umbrella in top plan view. :30 Fig. 2 is a. vertical section of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 shows a closed umbrella in side elevation with straps shown in dot dash lines.
A drip cover (Z of porous material or other suitable substance, such as sponge rubber, is fastened on the umbrella. cover 6, carried by the stick a with the rib points projecting therefrom, said drip cover cl being connected either permanently or loosely in suitable manner, for example by sewing, sticking or by buttons h or in such a manner that the drip cover (Z adapts itself to the curvature of the outer edge of the umbrella cover Z), either only lying against same, projecting beyond same and thereby enlarging it, or lying around the outer edge of the umbrella cover, thus covering the upper and underneath simultaneously. The drip cover (5 has also point sleeves 6 composed of the same material which accommodate and enclose the points of the ribs.
In a similar manner to that above described a small drip cover may be provided on the umbrella cover 6 at the point, at which the point of the umbrella stick a projects from the umbrella cover, in order to prevent the umbrella running, when set down. The manner of constructing and fastening this small drip cover may be r ried as desired and may be effected in a similar way to that of the outer edge drip cover.
For squeezing out or emptying the water collected in the drip cover, so-called straps 9 made of leather, cloth or other suitable material may be used, which are placed round the drip cover and pulled tight, when the umbrella is closed and may be either fastened round the stick or carried in other suitable manner when the umbrella is opened.
The construction may be varied as desired and the material used is not restricted in any way.
I claim 1. A drop cover for an umbrella of porous material, such as sponge rubber, fastened around the outer edge of the umbrella cover so that it covers the outer edge and is adapted to absorb the water running off the umbrella cover.
2. A. drop cover for an umbrella of porous material, such as sponge rubber composed of a plurality of parts, fastened around the outer edge of the umbrella cover so that it covers the outer edge and is adapted to absorb the water running off the Lunbrella cover.
3. A drop cover for an umbrella of porous material, such as sponge rubber removably fastened around the outer edge of the umbrella cover so that it covers the outer edge and is adapted to absorb the water running off the umbrella cover.
4. A drop cover for an umbrella of porous material, such as sponge rubber, fastened around the outer edge of the umbrella cover so that it encloses the outer edge and is adapted to absorb the water running off the umbrella cover.
5. An umbrella as specified in claim 1,
comprising in combination with the rib points and the drip cover, sleeves of similar porous material as said drip cover, arranged on said drip cover and covering said rib points.
6. An umbrella as specified in claim 1, com prising in combination with the umbrella cover and the umbrellastick, a small drip cover of porous material, arranged at the aperture in said umbrella cover for the passage of said stick.
7. An umbrella as specified in claim 1, comprising in combination with the umbrella cover and the umbrella stick, a small drip cover of porous maierial i'emoi'ahly arranged at the aperture in said umbrella cover for the passage of said stick.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
