To all whom z'zfmag'/ Concern Be it" known that" I, SAMUEL Hh VHITL AKER, of Cincinnati, Hamilton' county, Ohio, have invented new and'usefulImprovements in Nut-M`achinesg` and I hereby declarethe following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification. Y
The nature and obj ect of my invention consistI in a provision for makingmetallic nuts of definite thickness not materially varying from thatof the bar, and so as to save the scrap produced by punching.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure l is a side elevation of a machine illustrating my invention, taken at the period of the commencement of the operation of clamping. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section at the line w Fig. l. taken at the period when the preparatory punching is completed. Fig. 3 is a vertical section at the line w m, Fig. 2. Fig. -t is a horizontal section in the same plane as Fig. 2; but taken at that stage of the operation when the bar is forwarded for the separation and completion of the nut. Fig. 5 is a vertical section at the line Fig. 4, taken at the period of the completion and liberation of the nut.
A, is the frame which supports the various operating parts.
Cams D, P, G, G, on the shaft B, impart by their rotation the proper motives tothe punching, shearing and pressing mechanism.
I employ a system of preparatory and linishing dies having the customary central apertures for the punches.
The dies N, and L. are mounted on and advance and recede together with a stock F, which has a longitudinal sliding motion imparted to it by the cam D. The die N is provided with upper and lower anges or lugs n. n. distant from each other the width of the bar. The central aperture of the die N, is occupied by a punch Z), (called by me the preparatory punch) which has an independent sliding motion imparted to it by the cam P, which acts on the stock p, of said punch.
The die L is provided with a cutting edge Z, which separates the partially formed nut.
The counter die K, is retracted by a brace of cams G, G', working in yokes H, H, which proceed from the crosshead I, attached to the stock of the counter die.

The operation is as follows: The parts being in the relative positions indicated in Fig. 1 and a bar having been fed in until its endtouches the side of the die L, the
stock F, moving forward (by the rotation of the cam D.) clamps first the upper and lower edges and then the Hat of the bar. The end of the bar being thus clamped on all sides, a quick movement imparted to the punch by the cam P, causes it to penetrate nearly the entire thickness of the bar. The portion of the bar about to be separated for a nut is thus punched nearly through its substance, but is not increased in width or thickness because held on one side and both edges by the die N, on the other side by the wall of the feed aperture and at the end by the side of the die L. The metal thus displaced from the center by the preparatory punch becomes incorporated in the substance of the bar or blank but-as the latter is confined on every side but that toward the feed aperture-no change occurs in the dimensions of the blank, the result being simply an increase in the length of the bar by an amount of metal, equal to that displaced by the punch. This being accomplished, the punch o, and die stock F, being now released by the continued rotation of the cams, are retracted by a spring, or otherwise and t-he bar is fed forward until its' end touches a suitable stop R. Tith the neXt advance of the stock F, the cutting edge Z. of the die L. severs the blank from the bar and the next space on the bar undergoes preparatory punching, while the separated portion is carried forward through and beyond the suit of rolls C, C. C, until the cross-head I, arriving at the extent of its motion the blank is forcibly compressed between the die and counter die and becomes slightly flattened thereby, so that on returning through the rolls it is subjected to a second pressing and by this means the corners are lled out and the nut perfectly formed. The form of the cam D, limits the retraction of the die stock F. to the required speed until the completion of the final pressing of the nut, atwhich time (being released) the stock and diesI F N L, fall back to their starting point as before explained, resulting in the release of the completed nut. The thin wad punched from the nut in its first passage through the rolls, escapes through the pas-v sage t.
I claim as new and of my invention herein:
The use of the preparatory punch Z), and die N, in the described combination with the shearing and finishing die L. punch or mandrel J'. and counter die K, whereby a nut of definite thickness is formed by first partially punching the blank while joined to the bar, and confined on every other side, then separating the blank and completing the punching and shaping; the whole being constructed and operating substantially in the manner herein set forth.
