1 REMOVABLE l HEEL Filed Dec. 14, 1929 Patented VSept. 29, 1931 '('Jliu'rrn STATES vPA'lfzlsrr OFFICE *r MARTIN PUDIN, OF COPLAY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNR- F FOTY `llE-llil. CENT '."LOy JOHN HABERERN, 0F COPLAY, llENNSYLVANIA` REMOVABLE HEEL 'Y Application led December 14, 1929. Serial No. 414,128.
The present invention relates to shoe constructions and more particularly to a detachable heel which may be readily applied on a shoe.
An object of this invention is to provide a removable heel member which, when in ap plied position, will be firmly and securely held on the heel of the shoe.
Another object of this invention is to provide a removable heel member which, when worn out, may be readily replaced by a new heel thus obviating the necessity of nailing a new heel to the shoe.
A further object of this invention is to provide an attachment which is adapted to take the place of the present heel structure of the shoe, and on which may be removably mounted a heel member which is adapted to be securely locked or clamped in position on the shoe.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described in and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the, accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal section taken substantially through the center' of a device constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention; Y
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the anchoring member;
Figure 3 is a front end elevation of the body member having the anchoring plate mounted thereon; and
Figure 4 is a detail top plan view of the removable heel.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates generally a removable heel member which is adapted to be mounted on a shoe and worn in the conventional manner. The heel portion 11 of a conventional shoe is preferably constructed of leather or the like, and is provided with a plurality of recesses 12 which are adapted to ext-end up- 50 wardly into the body of the heel and are pro'- vided" with elongated forward end portions 13. Y
A plate member 14 which may be constructed of metal or the like, is adapted to be mounted on the heel portion 11 and is provided with a plurality of openings 15 which are adapted to register with the recesses l2 in the heel portion 11 and are similarly provided with restricted forwardly extending openings 16. The plate member 14 is adapted to be secured or mounted on theheel mem- I ber 11 by a plurality of rivets 17 or the like which may be spacedly disposed about the surface of the plate. The plate member 14 may also be provided with a plurality of annular openings 18 spaced about the surface of the plate through which a plurality of conventional nails or heel securing members 19 are adapted to extend for fixedly holding the stationary or fixed heel portion 11 together with the anchor plate 14 on the rear portion of the shoe. The plate member 14 is provided with a removable heel securing member 20 which is pivotally mounted on the plate 14 by a headed pivot member 21 or the The removable heel member 10 is provided with a pluralityV of upstanding headed pins 22 which arespacedly positioned about the upper face portion thereof and which are 'adapted to removably engage the openings 15 and the recesses 12 in the stationary or fixed heel portion of the device.
The bodyportion 23 of the pin members 22 are adapted to engage the restricted openings 16 in the plate member 14, the enlarged headed portions 22 being interposed between the upper surface of the plate`14 and the body portion 11. The anchoring or locking member 2() is provided with a notch 24 spaced inwardly from the outer lend thereof which is adaptedlto engage about the reduced portion 23 of one of the pin members 22 in the removableheel 10. The plate 14 is preferably provided with an upstanding locking or securing. lug member 25 which is provided with a slotted recess or the like 26 and similarly the anchoring or locking member 2O is provided with aslotted portion 27 which is adapted to register with the slotted portion 26 for securely holding the anchoring member 20 in locked position.
In the use of this device, the fixed heel member 11 is adapted to be mounted on the heel of the shoe taking the place ot the conventional heel structure at present in use, the brads or nails 19 securely holding the body member 11, together with the anchoring plate lt on the heel portion of the shoe. The anchoring or securing member 2O may be swung outwardly so that the removable heel member may be mounted thereon, the enlarged headed portions ot the pins 22 extending into the openings 15 of the plate and the recesses 12 in the body portion of the heel. The heel 10 may then be pushed forwardly so that the reduced portions of the pin will engage in the restricted slots 16 of the anchoring plate 14, wheref. upon the anchoring member 2O may be swung on the pivot 21 so that the slotted portion 2awill engage about one ot the pin members 22. It is of course understood that the free end of the anchoring member 22 extends forwardly of the heel so that when the heel is used in the conventional manner, the anchoring or securing member will not be disturbed.
It desired, the forward end of the anchoring member 2O together with the securing lug 25 may be positioned spaced rearwardly of the forward end of the shoe and a slight recess formed in the heel so as to substantially countersink the tree end of the locking member 20 in order that the locking member 2O will not accidently release the removable heel member l0.
It is, ot course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment or" this invention and that the device may be constructed in various sizes to conform to the various heel structures at present in use, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claim I.Vhat is claimed is A removable heel for a shoe comprising an upper heel plate, means for mounting the plate on a shoe, said plate having a plurality of elongated slots therethrough terminating at one end in an enlarged opening, said plate having a depending horizontally slottedy lug on the inner edge thereof intermediate each side, a lower plate, a heel member, means for securing said lower plate to said member, said secu ing means including rivets having enlarged heads adapted to engage in said slots of said upper plate, and a locking bar pivotally mounted on said upper plate, said bar having a. pair ot notches intermediate its ends, one ot said notches. receiving the head of one ot' said rivets and the other of said notches receiving said lug, the sides of said bar inwardly of said other notch frictionally engaging signature.
