As best shown in Figure 3, the revolvlng lid 16 has a bent edge or lip 19 providing a socket 20, the lip and socket registering vvith a similar lip 21 and socket22 formed in the upper edge of the drum 6. lt Will be seen that when the lid is turned,
'the registering of the lips 13 and 21 in their respective sockets Will prevent further revclution of the lid. l have also placed a hinged hasp 23 on the drum, this hasp being secured to thelid by a Wing y Within the drum 6 is a hamper or basket 25 which is provided With journal sockets 26, 27. The set screvvs 28, 29, which are threaded through these Iiournal sockets serve to cure the basket 25 to the fined shafts 14, As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the basket is also provided With dish-retaining members 30 which are secured to the sides 31, 32, ofthe hamper 25. These dish retaining members consist of pieces of substantial Wire bent to form convolutions which are adapted clampingly to retain plates, saucers, cups, knives, etc. and other items employed in the preparation and serving of meals. By referring to Figure 2 it will be seen that l have provided diagonally positioned Wire retainers 33, 34, in which the plates 35, 36, are removably held. With a view to causing circulation of liquid through the mesh of the Wire hamper, I rovide an agitator or paddle Wheel 37 w ich has a number of vanes 38 removably secured to radially extending members 39 formed on the periphery of a hub 40, on which latter is s gear 41 secured thereto. The gear 41 meshes with a gear 42 having a ange 43, the flange 43 being fastened to a revolvable sleeve 44 having an integral spiral clutch jaw 45 adapted to be engaged by a coacting spiral jaw clutch member 46 resiliently impelled by a spring 46'; the jaw clutch 46, as best seen in Figure 2, being splined on shaft 47 for a purpose which will be described hereinafter.
The vanes 38 of the agitator Wheel 37, as best shown in Figure '3, are confi red in a manner to scoop liquid from the ottom of the drum and im el it through the open Wire 'mesh of the bas et 25. YThe vanes, as will be seen, comprise T-shaped members 48 which are seated in the forks 49 of the radially extending members 39, the T-sha ed members being secured by means of olts and wing nuts y50. When it is desired to replace a vane for any purpose, it will be necessary to remove the wing nuts and withdraw the bolts, after which the T-shaped members 48 may be taken out for removal or repairs, as desired.
On a bracket 5, secured to an end wall of the drum 6, is a motor 51 coupled to a shaft 52, leading to a housing 52', having a Worm 53 meshin with a worm gear 54 mounted on f the shaft 4 upon which is rotatabl mounted the clutch member 45 secured to t e smaller gear 42 also rotatably mounted upon shaft 47 and which meshes with gear 41 on hub 40.
The function and mode of operation of my device has been in a large measure indicated by the foregoing detailed description, but will become more fully apparent by the following brief description:
When it is desired to make use of the device, the drum 6 will be partially filled with a soapy or alkaline solution, preferably heated. The dishes are now inserted in the basket 25 which, in the drawings, is provided with the wire retaining members pointed out above, the number of retaining members herein illustrated being only adequate to set forth their function, since in actual ractice I have found it desirable to provide tiiis basket `Ji'ith suiicient wire retainers placed in staggered relation to hold all species of dishes and cutlery. The basket is, of course, retained by the set screws 28, 29, motionless on the shaft, but if desired may be removed by withdrawing the stud shafts 14, 15, after the other set screws 14', 15 have been loosened.
Assuming the basket to be filled with the required number of dishes, etc. the lid 16 will now be swung to form a complete coverin over the drum, as bestshown in Figures 1 an 3, the lid being locked during the power operation of the device by a hasp 26 and its coacting wing nut. The motor 51 will now be set in operation, causing the shaft 52 and consequently the worm 53 to revolve, thereby turning the worm gear, 54, shaft 47, and gear 42, in a counter-clockwise direction, the latter meshing with gear 41 secured to hub 40 of the agitator wheel 37, it being observed that the s ring 46 will normally cause the sliding clutc jaw 46 splined on shaft 47, to operatively engage its corresponding member 45 on an extension of which the gear 42 is sel cured.
I am, therefore, able to effect a substantial saving, not only of water, but that which is more important, the soaps and alkalies which commercial establishments particularly find it desirable to use, with a view to more quickly performing the cleansing operation.
It will be apparent that the device is susceptible of wide modification and change; it being understoodthat I have illustrated and described -merely a preferred form of my invention. Hence I do not confine myself literally to the details as set forth but only insofar as they fall within the scope and spirit of the appended claims.
What claim is new a'nd desire/to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the kind described comprising a drum, a dish-containing basket in said drum, said drum having an adjustable cover, said basket and cover being removably connected to said drum, an agitator wheel within said drum and rotatably'mounted about said basket, a power-operated shaft, drive mechanism operatively connecting said shaft and said agltator wheel, and a releasable one-way clutch operatively mounted in said drive mechanism.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a drum, shafts removably secured to said drum, a basket secured to said shafts, an agitator wheel rotatably mounted upon said shafts, power-operated gear mechanism operatively connected to said agitator wheel, and a releasable one-wayy clutch operatively connected to said gear mechanism.
3. A dish washing device of the kind described comprising end supporting members, a drum adapted to contain liquid on said end supporting members, a journal socket fastened to one of said end members, a sleeve rotatable in said journal socket and having an integral jaw clutch, a gear secured to said sleeve, a shaft in/each of said supporting members, a dish-containing basket secured on said shafts, a lid connected to said drum, an agitator wheel removably mounted on said shafts, gear secured to the agitator wheel and coactingiwith said first-mentioned gear, a power-operated shaft rotatably mounted in the said one of the end supporting members, and a. spring-impelled clutch member splined on said power-operated shaft and registering with and en aging said jaw clutch.
4. A dish wang device of the kind described comprising end support' members a drum adapted to contain liquid fastened to said end supporting members, a journal socket fastened tov one of said end members, a sleeve rotatable in said journal socket, a gear secured to said sleeve, a shaft in each of said supporting members a dish-containing basket secured on said shafts, a lid connected to said drum, any agitator wheel removably mounted on said shafts, a gear secured to the agitator wheel and coacting with said first-mentioned gear, a
