After passing the roller 15, the edge 18 at one side of the groove is partly cut away, leaving the groove quite shallow but the wood which has been compressed when subject to moisture will swell and form a projection as shown at 19 in Figure 8 This swelling of the wood is very effective in sealing the joints where the boat is not subject to too much'vi'bration.
