This invention relates to propelling means and more particularly to propelling means which are adapted to be removably attached to the limbs of an individual whereby the individual is propelled through water upon movement of the limbs.

An object of this invention is to provide propelling means for use by fishermen or workmen, which propelling means are adapted to be used in combination with means for maintaining the individual substantially above the top of the water, which floating means has been more particularly set forth in my co-pending application for improvements in wading boats, filed on even date hereof.

A further object of this invention is to provide propelling means, or oars which, when attached to the limbs of an individual and projected into the water, will propel the individual in one direction, the movement of the device-in the opposite direction swinging the propelling means into inoperative position.

The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described in and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein V Figure l is a detail perspective view of a device constructed according to the pre ferred embodiment of this invention showing the device in inoperative position, and

Figure 2 is a similar view showing the device in operative position.

Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates generally a body plate of suitable configuration whichis adapted to engage partially about the leg or limb of an individual. This plate 10 is adapted to be secured to the leg of an individual closely 15 7 ad acent the foot by means of strap members 11 which are extended through slots or openings 13 adjacent the sides of the plate 10. These straps 11 are disposed in spaced m relation to each other adjacent the upper and lower ends of the body plate 10, and

at one .end to the extension let and extends forwardly so as to engage about the heel of the shoe or boot of the individual. In this manner, the plate 10 will not turn about the leg of the individual,, as the securing hook l5-wil1 prevent turning of the plate 10.

A propelling member or plate 16 is hingedly secured to the body plate 10 by means of hinged members 17, this plate 16 being disposed in substantially vertical position. This propeller or paddle 16 is adapted to swing rearwardly toward the body member 10 when the leg is moved forwardly through the water. When the leg is moved rearwardly, the propeller-or oar is swung outwardly and away from the body 10, and is held in outstanding relation with respect thereto by means of braces or lugs 18 which are secured to the body member 10 and engage against one face of the propelling plate 16 when the leg is moved rearwardly so as to hold the plate 16 in a position whereby the rearwardmovement of the leg will cause forward movement of the individual.

In my co-pending application, hereinbefore identified, I have provided means for suspending an individual in relatively deep water, and the device hereinbefore described is adapted to be used with this wading boat so as to propel the individual through the water while suspended therein. These oars or propelling members 16 may be of any desired width depending only upon the speed which it is desired to obtain in propelling the individual through the water. a

It is, of course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claim.

I claim As a new article of manufacture, an oar of the character described comprising a plate member of longitudinally arcuate configuration, means for removably securing said plate to the limb of an individual, a reduced extension extending downwardly from the lower end of said plate, a locking member carried by said extension and engaging about the heel of a shoe whereby to cooperate with said securing means for holding said plate against circumferential movement on the limb, an oar member, means for rockably securing said oar member to said plate, and bracing means outstanding from said plate and adapted to engage said oar member whereby to hold said oar memher in outstanding operative position.
