BAILEY, OF EASTON, AND RALPH M. HARDGROVE, F BETHLEHEM, PENN- SYLVANLA, ASSIGNORS T0 FULLER LEHIGH COMPANY, OF FULLERTON, PENNSYL- VANIA, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE RETAINING MEANS FOR FURNACE WALL BLOCKS CONTACTING WITH WALL TUBES Original application filed October 20, 1927, Serial N0. 227,456. Divided and November 17, 1928.
This invention relates to a furnace wall and blocks with means for keeping the furnace wall blocks or tile in firm contact with water wall tubes located in the furnace wall so as to maintain a good contact for the best heat conducting between the tile and tubes, and yet provide attachment in such a manner that broken or injured blocks or tile can be removed and rep-laced by new ones. This is a division of our application Ser. No. 227,- 456. filed October 20. 1927.
The invention will be understood from the description in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Fig. l is a side view partly broken away showing a portion of the furnace wall and Fig. 2 is a section along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings reference character 1 indicates water tubes of the furnace wall to which water wall blocks or tile 2 are connected. Each block or tile 2 is somewhat T-shapcd in cross section and is provided with rounded portions or curved surfaces 3 to fit against the tubes and with an extension 4 that projects beyond the center lines of the tubes.
The extensions or projecting portions 4 of ,the tile are provided with recesses 5 along the sides thereof to provide spaces between the extensions 4 of the tile and the tubes 1. Pairs of holding members 6 have one of their ends rounded as shown at 7 and resting against the tubes with their other ends extending over the projecting portions 4 of the tile. Each of the holding mem bers 6 is provided with a hook portion 8 that extends into the recesses 5 of the tile with the bearing portion 7 resting against the outside surfaces of the tubes 1. of the holding members 6 overlap and are provided with screw threaded holes through which screw threaded bolts 9 extend and contact with the outer surface of the pro- Ends this application filed SerialNO. 320,039.
vided with shoulders 10 that contact with each other to prevent the holding members from becoming displaced as the bolts 9 are screwed in.
Changes and modifications can be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention; It is to be understood that where the word tile is used in the specification and claims it is meant to include blocks as well, that it may be made entirely of metal or composite blocks made of metal andrefractory materials.
\Ve claim:
1. In a furnace wall, water tubes, tile having a portion extending between said tubes, recesses in the sides of said portion, and metallic holding members bearing against said tubes and extending into said recesses, said members overlapping each other.
2. In a furnace wall, water tubes, tile having a portion extending between said tubes, recesses in the sides of said portion, and metallic holding members bearing against said tubes and extending into said recesses, said members having portions extending over the end of the extending portion of said tile.
3. In a furnace wall, water tubes, tilehaving a portion extending between said tubes, recesses in the sides of said portion, holding members bearing against said tubes and extending into said recesses, said members having portions extending over the end of the extending portion of said tile, and tightening means extending through said extending portions of said members.
4. In a furnace wall, water tubes, tile having a portion extending between said tubes, recesses in the sides of said portion, holding members bearing against said tubes and extending into said recesses, said members having portions extending over the end of the extending portion of said tile, and bolts extendingthrough said extending portions of said members.
5. In a furnace wall, water tubes, tile having a portion extending between said tubes, recesses in the sides of said portion, holding members bearing against said tubes and extending into said recesses, said members overlapping each other, and having shoulders bearing against each other.
6. In a furnace wall, water tubes, wall blocks in contact withasaid tubes, levers con- 5 tactin with said blocks and said tubes arranged to clamp said blocks to said tubes, and means between said levers and said blocks for exerting a pressure upon said levers and said blocks.
7. In a furnace wall, water. tubes and wall blocks, and levers 'clamping said blocks to said tubes, and adjustable means between said levers and blocks.
8. In a furnace wall, Water tubes and wall blocks, levers clamping said blocks to said tubes, and threaded bolts extending through one end of said levers and resting against said blocks. ERVIN G. BAILEY. 2Q RALPH M. HARDGROVE.
