OF YORK, PENN SYLVAIIIA A. CORPORATION OF PEN'NSYLVANIA Mrxrne rlaonrnn Application filed September 13, 1929. Serial No. 392,452.
This invention relates to mixing machines and an important object of the invention is the production of a device of this character particularly adapted for construction in the larger sizes, which is of such construction that the mixing bowl may be very readily manipulated in the installation or removal thereof and may be very readily adjusted so that the agitator employed with the mixing bowl loima-y be disposed at various depths in the batch contained in the mixing bowl.
A further object of the invention is the production of an apparatus for adjusting the bowl, when in position on the machine, of such character that the bowl may be very rapidly shifted from one to another of its positions and may be securely held in any of its positions.
A. further object of the invention is the production in an apparatus of the character just described of a handle controlling the shifting of the bowl which serves likewise as a lock for maintaining the bowl'in its; adjusted positions.
still further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved transmission for use with a paratus of this character and a control for this transmission enabling the use of a fairly complicated tvpe of transmission having a great number of. speed changes and which at the same time is of such simple character that it might be manipulated by employees having only'aslight mechanical knowledge. 1
of the apparatus These and other objects I attain bv the construct on shown in the accompanying draw- 5-5 of Fig. 3 showing the latching yoke. in
transversionally extending hollow head 12 constituting, as hereinafter more fully explained, a gear casing one end of which overhangs the base. At the corresponding side,
of standardll apair of vertically-extending stationary shafts 13 are mounted, these shafts slidably supporting a yoke 14 having outweirdly-extending arcuate arms 15 adapted to receive therebetween the mixing bowl 16.
Mixing bowl 16 is open-topped and is provided upon its exterior adjacent the top thereof with an outstanding flange 17 which is adapted to rest upon the extremities of the arms and is provided. with apertures for the reception of projecting pins 18 projecting upwardly from such extremities Yoke 1.4 isformed at its upper end Wltll a lug.
19 notched as-indicated at 20 for the reception of the inner edge of this flange and the bowl is thus held both against vertical 7 displacement and against circumferential movement. I
'Yoke 14 at its inner face is formed as a vertical rack 21. Upon the horizontal pivot shaft 22 extending through the standard 11 I secure a segment gear 23 meshing with this rack. One end of shaft 22 pro ects through the side wall of standard 11 and is there equipped with a latch lever 24, the latch 25 of which co-acts with a segmental rack 26 to maintain the lever and thereby the segmental gear 23 and rack 21 in any desired vertically adjusted position.
These vertically adjusted positions will, correspond to vertically adjusted positions of the bowl and thus means are provided for determining. exactly the depth of engagement of the mixing paddle in the bowl and, accordingly, to ex tend the agitation of the mixture.
Above the shaft 22 and adjacent the top of the standard 11 I provide a second horizontal transversely-extending shaft 27 which is rotatably mounted in the walls of the standard and which has mounted thereon an organization including a central relatively small pulley element 28 and larger pulley elements 29 arranged at opposite sides thereof and fixed against rotation with relation thereto. The yoke, and more particularly the upper end of the yoke, has secured there to an attaching eye 30 over which extends a cable 31 which is secured to pulley 28.
Each of pulleys 29 has secured thereto a cable 32, the lower end of which is attached to a counter-weight 1V. 7 These counterweights are thus disposed at opposite sides of the segment gear 23 so that in their raising and lowering operations they will not interfere with the movements thereof.
The transmission housing 12 hereinbefore referred to is divided by partitions 34 and 35 into main and secondary transmission chambers 36 and 37 and-an output drive chamber 37+a. In the partitions 34 and 35 I journal shafts 38 and 39, shaft 38 having secured thereto within thechamber 36 a plurality of fixed gears indicated 'at40, 41 and 42 while shaft 39 has splined' thereto a triple gear 43 having elements for co-action with each of gears 40, 41 and 42. Within the compartment 37 I dispose shafts 44 and 45, shaft 44 axially aligning with shaft 38 and having bearing in a clutch gear 46 which is carried by the end of shaft 38 and disposed in compartment 37. Shaft 45 if desiredinay be axially aligned with shaft 39 for convenience in effecting the mounting thereof, which will be obvious from the drawings.
Shaft 45 has secured thereto a pinion 47 meshing withjclut-zh gear 46 and hasrotatably mounted thereon a clutch gear 48 which meshes with a pinion 49 secured to shaft 44. The co-acting clutch elements of these clutch gears 46 and 48 are secured to their associated shafts and the clutcheshO connecting the respective elements are preferably 0 the expanding type embodying expansion bands 51 between the ends of which a tapered clutch finger 52 may enter. to provide the necessary expansion. Clutch fingers 52 are rotatably mounted upon their respective shafts and are connected for simultaneous movement by a shifting yoke 53.
Rotatably mounted in the end walls of casing '12 and in the partitions 34 and 35 and projecting through the front wail of the housing 12 is a control shaft 54 the .pper end of which is provided-with a spoke wheel 55. The outboard bearing 56 at the front end wall of the transmission housing'12 is formed in its upper surface with longitudinally extending slot- 57, this slot interer face of this housing.
rupting at spaced intervals cireumferentially extending slots 58, 59 and 60. Within the compartment 37' this shaft has splined thereto a worm 61 upon which is mounted a nut 62 bearing yoke 53. Rotatably mounted upon the shaft 54 within compartment 36 is a shifting yoke 63 for triple gear 43, this yoke being held against longitudinal movement by collars 64. 7
By shifting shaft 54 longitudinally, to align pin 65 thereof with one or the other 'of circumferential slots 58, 59 and 60 of bearing 56, triple gear 43 may be caused to bring its proper gear element in engagement 'ith either of the gears 40, 41 or 42. L011- gitudinal movement of the shaft can, of course, only'be accomplished when pin 65 is aligned with the longitudinally extending slot and at this time nut 62 and yoke 53, and accordingly clutch fingers 52 will be disposed in an intermediate or neutral position. Shaft 44 is driven and since its sole connection with the input, shaft 38 of the main transmission is either directly through clutch gear 46 or through clutch gear 46 by way of clutch gear 48 it follows that the gearing is actually in a neutral posit-ion at anytime when the triple gear 43 is being shifted. When the selection has been made,
eith r of gears 46 or 48 may be clutched toits respective shaft by rotating shaft 54 clockwise or counterclockwise thus causing rotation of worm 61 and a corresponding movement of yoke 53 and of the clutch finger. W] hen clutch gear 46 is clutched to its shaft the drive is directly from this shaft to shaft 38 and from shaft 38 to shaft 39 through the selected gear 40, 41 or 42 and its associated element of the triple gear. When clutch gear 48 is clutched to its shaft '45 the drive is from shaft 44 through pinion 49, clutch gear 48, shaft45, pinion 47 and gear 46. Through the pinions 4'7 and 49 a substantial reduction in speed of operation .is obtained so that for each gear ratio provided in the main transmission compartment two speeds are available.
Shaft 39 forms the output shaft of the main transmission and projects into the mixer drive chamber 37a. In this drive chamber, there is disposed verticallyextending shaft 66 having secured thereto a bevel gear 67 engaged by a bevel pinion 68 carried by the shaft 39. This shaft projectsthrough the lower end of the transmission housing axially to the bowl 16 and through an orbit gear 69 secured to the low- Secured to the lower'end' of the shaft is a disc 70 the periphery of which is provided with an upstanding flange 71 forming an oil guard. and sur rounding the orbitgear 69. This disc has an eccentrically disposed downwardly projecting bearing chamber 72 in the upper and lower ends of which are disposed bearbit gear 69.
ings 73 for the reception of a vertically e5:-
tending shaft 74 the upper end of which has a planet pinion 75 meshing with the orlike extension '78 formed u on the upper end of mining paddle 33. The upper end of this sleeve is conical with the base end thereof upwardly disposed and is notched as at 79 for the reception of the lug 80 of the collar.
Pivoted to the collar 76 is a U-shaped' clamping yoke 81 formed of spring metal The pivotal connections of this yoke with the collar preferably comprise inturned terminal portions 82 upon the arms thereof extending into sockets 83 formed in the collar. The collar adjacent the free ends of the arms of the yoke has formed thereon wedge-shaped lugs 84 w rich extend at right angles to the yoke when in its clamping position and have the smaller: ends thereof engaged with this yoke. The yoke, when. in its clamping position, is engaged with the sleeve-like extension 78 of the mixing paddle 33 at its junction with the conical upper end 85 thereof. Since this yoke to move from this position must overcome the resistance caused by expansion of the arms through their engagement with the wedges 8 f, it follows that the yoke will normally -maintain this position and so serve to hold the sloevelilce extension and the paddle from downward movement even when the shaft 74 is rotating fairly rapidly and there is a considerable centrifugal force exerted against the bight of the yoke.
The mixing paddle 33 is preferably substantially spade-shaped as illustrated and the bottom of the mixing bowl at its center is provided with a conical projection so that there are no dead spots in the mixing bowl which will not be reached by the paddle.
In operation of the device the bowl is placed in position upon the yoke and adj usted to the proper height, the stirring paddle is then started in operation by selecting the proper gear and engaging the proper clutch. This will cause rotation of shaft 66 thus rotating disc 70 which carries with it the shaft 74. Rotation of disc 70 thus serves to accomplish rotation of shaft T l through the engagement of gear 75 with the orbit gear 69. The wide variation in available speeds enables mixtures to be produced which cannot be produced with the ordinary mixing machine and enables the contents of the bowl to be agitated at precisely the desired speed. Manipulation of the bowl in application thereof and in the adjustment thereof to its various positions is greatly facilitated and the. operation of the machine thus rendered mission including clutch gearing for effecting speed changes *thereima reversely shiftable clutch-operating element for alternately actuating said clutches, a second transmission receiving the output of the first-named transmission and changing gear element, a shaft rotatably and longitudinally shiftably directed through said transmissions, connections between said shaft and the clutch-operating element whereby when the shaft is rotated the clutchoperating element is shifted in a direction depending upon the direction of rotation of the shaft and a connection between the shiftable gear element of the second transmission and said shaft permitting independent rotation of the shaft while operatively shifting said gear upon longitudinal shifting movements of the shaft.
