BED TRAY Filed Aug. 1e, 1929 WW". l! f4 Patented Sept. 15, 1931 PATENT GUY F. SCRIVEN AND LT1-O H. LPEERT, OF SOUX FALLS, SOUTH DAKOTA BED TRAY Application filed. August 16, 1929. Serial No. 386,465.
r1 his invention relates to bed trays and the primary object thereof is to provide a simplified structure of bed tray in which same is attached to the head of the bed and can be compactly folded to lie close thereto, and with the tray disposed on the back of the bed head so as to be out of the way.
A further obj ect of the invention is to pro vide a bed tray, in which the tray proper is a formed so that one side thereof can be used :tor reading or writing and the opposite side for use in serving meals.
ln the drawings Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the invention if, and showing the parts in folded position in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1, the bed a post being shown in section;
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a section on line lf-4l of Fig. 2. In proceeding in accordance with the present invention a clamp 1 is provided which is secured about the bed post B, the clamp having a front extension formed with an opening 2 in which is received a pin 3, the latter passing through perforated ears i formed on a 0. horizontally swingable member 5. A rod 6 is provided and which has a bifurcated rear end receiving the forward end of the member 5 and to which it is secured by a bolt and thumb nut 3, whereby it will be noted that the rod 6 can be swung vertically and held in any adjusted position by the bolt 8. The forward end of the rod 6 is telescopically received in a sleeve 9 and is adjustably held therein by means of a thumb nut 10 carried 02 by the sleeve 9. The forward end of the sleeve 9 is provided with a perforated lug 11 which receives a thread pin 12 formed on the lower end of a substantially C-shaped bracket 13. The pin 12 is provided with a. 95 wing nut 14 by means of which the bracket 13 is adjustedly secured to the sleeve 9. The upper end of the bracket is formed with a collar 15 and with a rod-like extension 16, the latter being received in a sleeve 17 formed OZ at the longitudinal center of the tray 18, the tree end of the rod 16 being threaded and receiving a thumb nut 19 in order to enable the tray to be reversed and also held in any adjusted inclined position.
Referring to Fig. 4 of the drawings, it will be noted that the tray has similar sides 19 and 20, so that one ofthese sides can be .tinished in 'white to be used in the serving of meals, while the other side can be linished in mahogany or any other color for use in reading or writing.
l/Vith the parts in position or Fig. 1 it will be noted that the tray can be moved to occupy various inclined positions and same may be moved toward or away from the head of the bed by manipulation of the thumb nut 10. The tray can also be bodily swung in a horizontal plane `about the pin 3. `When not in use the parts 6 and 9 can be swung about the pin 3, thereby to dispose the bracket 13 in embracing relation to the bed post B, or to extend about the same, thus compactly holding the parts until ready for iurther use, and with the tray held rearwardly of the bed head.
What is claimed is 1. In a bed tray, a clamp formed for attachment to a bed head, a member pivoted to the clamp for horizontal swinging movements, a rod adjustably pivoted to said member Jfor vertical swinging movements, a sleeve telescopically receiving the rod, means to hold the sleeve and rod in adjusted positions, a substantially C-shaped bracket adjustably connected at one end tothe sleeve tor horizontal pivotal movements, a rod connected at one end to the other end of the bracket, and having its opposite end threaded, a tray having a central longitudinal sleeve to receive the last named rod, and a thumb nut on said threaded end of the rod to hold the tray in adjusted position thereon, said parts being arranged so that in olded position the first rod and sleeve will lie vertically and the tray also vertically and rearwardly of the bed head and the C-shaped bracket will extend about a side of the bed head.
2. In a bed tray, a support having means for attaching same to a bed head, a tray, a
member formed toextend about a side of the bed head, means to connect the tray to said member, and means to connect the member to said support for horizontal and vertical movements, said last named means being movable to lie vertically in front of the bed head and to hold the tray vertically rearwardly of the bed head and with said member extending about the bed head.
3. In a bed tray, a clamp formed for attachment to a bed head, a member pivoted to the 10 clamp for horizontal swinging movements, a tray, a support Jfor the tray having a part formed to extend about a side of the bed head, and means to connect the support to said member whereby to enable the said 15 means to lie vertically in one position and with the support disposed horizontally and the tray disposed vertically and rearwardly of the bed head. n
Ll. In a bed tray, a` cla-mp formed for attachment to a bed head, a member pivoted to the clamp for horizontal swinging movements, a tray, a substantially C-shaped bracket, means to secure the tray to the bracket, means to support the bracket, and means to .$5 connect the supporting` means to the said member whereby in one position the tray and said connecting means lie vertically and with the tray rearwardly of the bed head and the -shaped bracket lies horizontally and disposed about a side of the bed head.
5. ln combination with supporting means formed for attachment to a bed, extensible holding means for the tray connected to the supporting means for vertical and horizontal Se swinging movements and means to pivotally connect the tray to the holding means for horizontal swinging movements relative to the holding means so that the tray may be, in one position, disposed at right angles to i0 the holding means and upon vertical swinging of the latter the tray will be disposed rearwardly of the bed head, and then upon contraction of the holding means the tray will be disposed in a position in which the vf5 adjacent part of the bed hea-d extends over the tray. A
In testimony whereof we aiiix our signatures.
