The invention relates to a combined automatic fire extin isher and alarm.
The object o the present invention is to provide a simple, practical and eflicient automatic fire extinguisher and alarm of strong, durable and comparatively inexpensive construction adapted to be readily installed in a house or other place and equipped with a fusible member adapted in the event of a fire to be fused by the heat thereof for releasing a spring member capable when released of firing a dynamite cap and of breaking a hermetically sealed glass container containing a fire extinguishing liquid such as carbon tetrachloride.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the inventlon or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the automatic fire extinguisher and alarm comprises in its construction a bracket 1 constructed of heavy sheet metal or other suitable material consisting of a vertical body portion provided at its upper and lower ends with horizontal arms 2 and 3 having openings4 and 5 for the reception of the 'end portions of a hermetically sealed glass container 6 designed to contain carbon tetra.- chloride or other suitable fire extinguishing liquid" which is designed to be converted into a gas by the heat of the fire and to smother or extinguish the same in the usual manner.

The body portion of the bracket is provided with perforations 7 for the reception of screws or other suitable fastening devices for securing the bracket to a wall or other suitable support, and the bracket is equipped at the back with a resilient arm 8 of relatively light spring metal connected at its lower end- 9 to the bracket and provided at its'upper end with a head 10 of substantially cylindrical form. The spring 9, which forms a bin e member, extends longitudinally of the brac et and is located at the lower portion thereof. The head 10 has apointed end 11 which is maintained in contact with the adjacent portion of the hermetically sealed glass container by the resiliency of the lower arm or spring 8. The head 10 projects rearwardly from the arm or spring 8-to form an abut ment 12 which is adapted to be engaged by a dynamite cap 13 orother explosive element carried bya head 14 of a relatively strong spring 15.
The spring 15, which is a fiat or leaf spring, is secured at its upper end 16 to the body portion of the bracket and is located at the upper portion thereof. The said spring 15 is maintained in a retracted position by a fusible link 17 extending across the spring 15 adjacent the head thereof and passingthrough apertures at opposite sides of the spring and I and smashes the same, thereby releasing the liquid and causing the container and the contents thereof to fall from the supporting bracket. The device will thereby not only awaken any occupants of the premises, but will also extinguish a fire.
While a glass container is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, a frangible container of any suitable material may, of course, be employed, and any form of explosive element may be employed which will be exploded with a loud noise by concussion with the abutment portion of the head of the lower spring or container-shattering member 9.
What is claimed is:
1. A combined fire extinguisher and alarm comprising a bracket, a frangible container supported by the bracket and adapted to contain a fire extinguishing liquid, a movable container-shattering member mounted on the bracket and arranged to engage and shatter the frangible container, a spring also mounted on the bracket and provided with means for carrying an explosive into contact with the shattering member, means for normally restraining the spring to maintain the explosive carrying means of. the spring normally out of contact with the shattering member and releasable for operation under the influence of heat to release the spring to'fire the said explosive and actuate the shattering member to shatter the said container.
2. A combined fire extinguisher and alarm comprising a bracket, a frangible container supported by the bracket and adapted to contain a fire extinguishing liquid, a movable container-shattering member mounted on the bracket provided with a head normally resting against the container, a spring mounted on the bracket and provided with means for carrying an explosive violently into contact with the head of the shattering member to fire the explosive and actuate the shat- I tering member to shatter the container, and means for normally holding the spring against operation, said means being fusible and'releasing the spring for operation as aforesaid when subjected to heat.
3. A combined fire extinguisher and alarm comprising a bracket, a frangible container supported by the bracket and adapted to contain a fire extinguishing liquid, a movable container-shattering member mounted on the bracket and having a head for engaging and shatterin the container, said head bein provided w1th a rearwardly projecting a utment portion, a spring mounted upon the bracket and provided with means for holding an explosive, and fusible means for holding the spring normally in inoperative position, said means being fusible under the influence of heat to release the spring so as to carry the explosive violently in contact with the abutment portion of the said head to fire the explosive and actuate the shattertainer, an upper leaf spring connected at its upper end to the bracket and provided at its lower end with a head adapted to receive an explosive and arranged to carry the same into engagement with the head of the shattering member to fire the explosive and actuate the shattering member to shatter the container, and a fusible element connecting the lower portion of the upperspring with the bracket for holding the said upper spring normally in a retracted position and releasing said upper spring when subjected to a certain degree of heat.
