Description

Sept. 8, 1.931. H. wlLKlNG WIRE TWISTING DEVICE Filed June 18, 1930 ATTORNEY.
Patented Sept. 8, 1931 am LQB Winn frwrsmrne ini-vien Application filed `Tune 18,
This invention relates to a wire twisting device particularly adapted for use'intighten- 5 object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter! set forth, a wire twisting device by means of which a comparatively inaccessible pair of wires may be quickly and conveniently twisted to tighten the same.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement'of parts as hereinafter more particularly described, and as illustrated in the accompany- 15 ing drawings wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the description and drawings are to be taken as illustrative and that the invention is intended to be limited only by the C23 scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the several views p Figure 1"is an elevation of a wire twisting :fea device in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken at a point indicated by the Vline 2*2 of Figurel. j
Figure 3 is a fragmentary section taken at Referringto the drawings in detail, the numerals 1 and 2 indicate a pair of handle members, the handle member 1 having end portion 3 outwardly offset with respect to Y the handle member 2 in order that the outer end portions of the handle members may be positioned a substantial distance apart with the inner end portions thereof positionedl comparatively close together and in parallel a point indicated by the line 3-8 of Figure'2. wall of the opening 7. The handle member 2 is provided at its inner end with a head 9` which is similar in every respect to the hea-,d 6.
The heads 6 and 9 are rotatably 4mounted upon a pair of annular shoulders l0 `formed exteriorly of a mutilated ratchetv 11.V The shoulders 10 extend through the concentrically disposed openings in the heads 6v and9 and the heads are maintained in position on the shoulders by means of a pair of side plates 12 which are fixedly'secured to the ratchet to form part-s thereof by suitablev bolts 13 extending throughthe' plates 12 and vinto the shoulders 10 and ratchet 11. The. ratchetlland plates 12v are formed in their, peripheral faces with a recess 14 which eX- tends inwardly beyond the axis'of the ratchet and plates. The recess 14' is' adaptedto be aligned with the' recesses 8 and when so aligned, the side walls of the recess 14 are flush with the side walls of therecesses 8. Having one end securedto the .plate `12 which retains the head 9 is a pin 15 which projectsinto the recess 14 midway `'between the side walls of thelatten'- On opposite sides of the recess 8, Vthe'head 6 is provided on its inner face with a pair of pawls-.lcand 17 `for engagementwith the' teeth 18 on the peripheral face of the ratchet l1. Each of the pawls is preferably formed of relatively stil,.resilient material, and is rigidly secured-to the head 6 in amann'ertohave its inner' end forced against theperipheryy of the ratchet 11. The head 9 is provided on itsl inner face witha pair of pawls Y19 and 2O similar to the pawls 16 and 17.
'ol-*Fica 1n the operation ofv thefdevice, Vthe.- ratchet y 11 is rotated lin a' manner to positiontherecess 14 in alignment with=thejrecesses ,8 in order Vthat-.a pair of'wires, such as 21maybe re-v ceived through the recesses with the pin 1 5 extending-between the wires. One ofgtheI handle vmembers is then lreciprocatedjwhile theother handle member-is heldl stationary in order that the pinl may be rotated with rcspect to the wires to twist the latter. For eX- n' ample, the-handle member 2 is-held stationary y while vthe, handle member 1 is reciprocated v which causesthe pawls 16and 17 to rotate the l ratchet 11 in a'cloclr-wisedirection asviewed in Figure 2. During the movement of the Y handle member 1 in a direction to cause the ratchet 11 tobe rotated by the pawls 16 and 17, the ratchet is rotated relative to the head D 9 on the handle member. During movement Owing to the constant engagement of at least one of the pawls on the stationary handle member with the teeth 1S, there can be no return movement off the ratchet 11 when the reciprocating handle member is moved relative thereto. Y
It is thought that the many advanta Oes of Y a wire twisting device in accordance with this invention will be readily apparent, and although the preferred embodiment oi the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the site, shape and arrangement-of' parts may be resorted to, so long as such changes fall within the scope of the invention as deiined in the appended claims.
What I claim is y 1. A wire twisting device comprising, a rotatable ratchet formed in its periphery with a recess extending inwardly bevond the axis of the ratchet, a pin secured to the ratchet and extending into the recess midway between the side walls of the latter,a pairof handle members rotatably mounted on the ratchet, and a pair of pawls carried. by each handle Y member for engagement with the-'ratchet on opposite sides of -said recess. Y
Q. A wire twisting device comprising, a roi tatable ratchet formed vinits 'periphery with a recess extending inwardly Abeyond the axis of the ratchet, a pin secured to the ratchet and extending into the recess midway between the sidewalls of the latter; a pair of oppositely disposed, annular shoulders formed on said ratchet, a Vpair of handle -members having their inner ends formed with substantially disk-shapedheads rotatably mounted on said shoulders,*each`-of said heads being formed its ,periphery with arecess'corresponding in' width to the'recess in the ratchet, and a pair-'pf pawls carried byeachhead ffor 'engage-k ment with the ratchet on opposite sides of the recess therein.`
VA wireitwisting device comprising, a roi m tat-able, ratchet formedv .with pair of oppositely disposed, annular shoulders, a'pair of handle members having vtheir inner ends formed with substantially disk-shaped heads A ,rotatably mounted lonsaid shoulders, each of. j m said heads being formed in its periphery with trolled solely through the pawls 17 and 2O.V
a recess, a pair of plates fixedl-y secured to said shoulders for maintaining the heads in position thereon, said ratchet and plates being formed in their peripheries with a recess adapted to be aligned withthe recesses in said heads and extending beyond the axis of the ratchet and plates, a pin secured to one of said plates and extending into the recess therein midway between the side walls of such recess, a pair of pawls carried by each head for engagement with the ratchet on opposite sides of the recess therein, and a remov- A able extension for each of said handle members. y
si. A wire twisting device comprising, a pair .of reciprocableha-ndle members, ,a rotatable ratchet disposed between the inner ends of the handle members, said ratchet hav- Y hereto.
