Description

a. H. JONES. WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 28. I921.
1,383,123. PatentedJune 28, 1921.
A TTORNEY.
PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT HENRY JONES, OF RANDOLPH, NEBRASKA.
WRENCH.
Application filed February 28, 1921.
To all whom it may concerns Be it known that l, Bonner H. Jones, a citizen of the United States, residin at Randolph, in the county of Cedar and tate of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference behad therein to the accompanying draw ings.
This invention relates to wrenches and has for an object to provide a wrench of the flexible band type for engagement upon and rotating the circular caps of grease cups and like circular objects, and to provide improved means for exerting stress upon and tightening the band.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench havin an operating bar and a cross head with pins carried by the cross head upon opposite sides of the-bar and with the extremities of a flexible band connected upon the pins, whereby the rotation of the bar and the cross head therewith tightens the band upon an embraced grease cup cap, or other circular object.
1V ith these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel units, ele ments and combinations as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved wrench applied to a grease cup cap;
Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic plan view showing the relation of the parts and the application of force in the turning of a cap or nut to the right;
3 is a diagrammatic view showing the relation of the parts and the application of force in the turning of a cap or nut to the left, and
l is an inverted perspective of the wrench band and cross head.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The improved wrench which forms the subject matter of this application is adapted for various uses wherein a round, circu- Specifioation of LettersPatent.
Patented June 28, 1921.
Serial no. 448,510.
lar or cylindrical member is to be turned, as, for instance, the cap of a grease cup, or other circular object. It comprises a bar 10 having a hand-hold 12 at one end and provided with a cross head at the opposite end. The cross head comprises spaced members 11 and 12 seated upon a square or multi-angular portion 13 of the bar 10 and provided with pins 1 1 and 15, rigidly secured to the mem bers 11 and 12; said members 11 and 12 and pins 14 and 15, together with the square portion 13, constitute said cross head.
Upon the pins 14 and 15 a flexible band 16 is secured by folding the extremities as at 17 and 18 to embrace the pins 14 and 15. The band 16 may be of any length forming the circumference necessary to fit any object upon which the device is to operate, as the grease cup cap 17, and of such further length that when the cross head is rotated in either direction, the band is tightened upon the periphery of such circular object, the tightening by the application of force being exemplified in Figs. 2 and 3.
From an examination of Figs. 2 and 8 the operation of the device, both as to its tightening upon the embraced object, and the rotation of that object by the application of force will be understood.
Vihat I claim to be new is:
1. A wrench comprising a bar having a cross head with spaced pins upon opposite sides of the bar, and a flexible band having its ends engaging and embracing said pins.
2. A wrench comprising a bar having an angular extremity, spaced members seated upon the angular extremity, pins extending between the spaced members and spaced upon opposite sides of the bar, and a flexible band having its ends folded about and emb1": cing the pins.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT HENRY JONES.
Witnesses:
J. M. GRIES, C. M. Mosnn.
