BARREL Filed 0Gt..26, 1929 INVENTOR CHRISTOPHER WuvsK/LL ATTORNEYS Patented Sept. 8, 1931 UNITED STATES CHRISTOPHER WINSKILL, F VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA BARREL Application filed October 26, 1929. Serial No. 402,727.
My invention relates to improvements in barrels which are particularly adapted for use in making cheapbarrels and tubs capable of holding liquid and semi-liquid materials and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a one piece metal head of economical manufacture provided with a rib which is adapted to be forced into a groove in the ends of the staves of a barrel and a rim by which the end is secured to the staves.
The invention consists essentially of a barrel formed of staves having grooved ends and a stamped head having a peripheral groove into which the staves are forced and means in the groove for entering the ends of the staves, as will be more fully described in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. l is a sectional view showing a portion of one end of a barrel.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the manner of grooving the ends of the barrel staves.
Fig. '3 is a sectional view of a modification of the invention.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
The numeral 1 indicates generally the body of a barrel which is formed in the usual manner with tapered wooden staves 2 placed side by side. The ends of each stave are chamfered on their inner sides as at 3, to provide substantially vertical inner peripheral walls 4 to the ends of the body. The ends of each stave are also provided with a relatively wide saw cut 5 which is made with its sides parallel to the chamber 3 to form vertical grooves '6 of rectangular cross section around the ends of the barrel. v
The numeral 7 indicates generally a barrel head which is preferably formed as a stamping and is provided with a peripheral groove 8 having substantially vertical inner side 4 walls 9, sloping outer side walls 10 conforming substantially to the shape of the ends of the body 1 and a connecting flange 11. The flange 11 is provided with an annular rib 12 which is pressed inwardly into the groove 8 and is formed in the form of a V whose widest portion is of greater width than that of the groove 6. The free edges of the outer side walls 10 are turned over to form a bead 13 which is adapted to enclose a wire hoop 14. The vertical depth of the outer side walls is substantially greater than the inner side walls 9 so as to form an enclosing wall for the ends of the body and to dispose the hoop 14 at a material distance beyond the central portion 15 of the head.
lVhen the barrel body is formed the heads 7 are placed and forced into position the V- I shaped rib 12 is forced into the groove 6 so as to compress the end fibres of the wood of the staves in opposite directions between the rib 5 and the outer side walls 10 of the head and the rib and the inner side wall 9, thus rendering the joint between the body and each head watertight. Subsequent to this operation nails or staples 16 are driven through the '70 outer side wall 10 adjacent the hoop 14 to prevent the endwise movement of the head in an outward direction.
In the modification shown in Figure 3 an annular ring 17 of wedge shaped section is f5 substituted for the rib 12 and held in position between the head 7 and the body portion 1.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A barrel comprising a body portion formed with wooden staves laid with the '3 grain of the wood longitudinally of the body and a barrel head formed of sheet material having a peripheral groove having side walls in which the ends of the body portion are received, and means for spreading the fibres of 35 the wood towards the side walls of the groove.
2. The method of making a barrel which consists of making a barrel body with wooden staves, forming a peripheral groove in the end of said body and fitting a sheet material he head having a peripheral groove adapted to receive the end of the barrel body, of forcing a wedge shaped member'into the groove of the body end to spread the fibres.
3. The combination with a barrel body, a" head comprising a blank of sheet material possessing a peripheral groove having a bottom wall and side walls, a substantially V- shaped member extending from the bottom wall intermediate the side walls with its apex uppermost the vertical depth of the outer side Wall being substantially greater than the inner side Wall for a purpose specified.
4. A barrel body head according to claim 3 having a bead formed on the free edge of the outer side Wall, and means associated with said head preventing endWise movement of the head in an outward direction;
Dated at Vancouver, B. 0., this 11th day of October, l929.
