The present invention relates to photographic apparatus and more particularly to the focusing mechanism thereof. An object of this invention is to provide a construction through which a front and back focal length of the apparatus may be simultaneously varied for the purpose of varying the size of the reproduction. A further object of the invention is to provide a construction in which the lens and the work support are adjusted relatively to an exposure field or focal plane of the photographic apparatus through a common operating means. Still another object of the invention is to provide a common support for the lens and the work support adjustable relatively to the exposure field or focal plane of the photographic apparatus, said support having the work support adjustable thereon relatively to the lens, provision being made whereby the movement of the common support of the lens and the work support, and the movement of the work support on the common support is effected through a single operating means.
T o these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the illustrated embodiment of the invention, 1 indicates the casing of a photographic apparatus Serial No. 181,179.
in the upper part of which is provided an exposure chamber 2 adapted to have a sheet 3 of sensitized material supported therein at the exposure field or focal plane of the apparatus. A lens 41 supported by a sleeve 5 is movable toward and from the exposure eld or focal plane 3 and to this end, in this end the sleeve 5 operates in a space 6 between two sleeves 7 and 8 projecting into the exposure chamber and forming a light tight seal between the Sleeve 5 and such exposure chamber.
Vith the idea of supporting the lens 4 for movement relatively to the exposure iield there is provided a supporting meanswhich, in this instance, comprises two horizontal rods 9 guided at 10 within the casing 1 below the exposure chamber, said rods having coupling members 11 at their outer ends from which uprights 12 project said uprights being secured at 13 to the lens supporting sleeve 5. From the coupling members 12 of the supporting means depend two rods 14 upon which a work supporting member 15 is guided, said work supporting member, in this instance, l,
having an illuminating means 16 arranged above it for illuminating the work thereon. A reiiector 17 in the form of a prism is supported in front of the lens 4, and maintains optical relation between the work support 15 and the lens lso that work on the work support may be projected by the lens on the sensitized material 3.
A novel means is provided for eifecting a simultaneous adjustment of the back and the front focal length of the apparatus for the purpose of obtaining reproductions of different sizes such as of exact size, a reduced size, or an enlarged size. This result is accomplished in this embodiment by the provision of a horizontal shaft 17a provided with two d pinions 18 each of which meshes with one of two racks 19 arranged on the rods 9, the rods being guided in bearings 2O supported below such rod. The shaft 17 a has on the exterior of the casing 1, a hand wheel 21 by which the shaft may be turned for the purpose of causing the pinions 18 to shift the racks 19 and thereby move the common support for the lens and the work support. On the shaft 17' is a finger or index 22 which travels over the dial 23 having suitable indication for pointing out the direction to move the shaft in order to obtain a desired reproduction.
With the end in view of effecting the movement of the work support relatively to the lens 4 with the movement of the common support relatively to the exposure field or focal plane, there is provided a novel operating means which, in this instance, comprises a horizontal shaft 24 mounted on the casing 1 below the shaft 17EL and having thereon two segments 25 each of which has a groove curved surface 26 for the reception of the fiexible connection 27. Each flexible connection 27 is secured at 28 to the segment 25 adjacent one end of the groove 26 and extends from said secured portion in engagement with said face. From the segmental portion 25, each flexible connection passes over a pulley 29 supported on a coupling member 11. From this pulley 29 the flexible connection extends to and is secured to the work support, preferably in the manner to be described. Movement of the segmental members 25 is effected by swinging members 30 turning about a common axis 41 and each having a segmental gear portion 42 adapted to mesh with one of two pinions 43 on the shaft 24. Each swinging member 30 has a roller 31 which coo erates with one of two cams 32 arrange on the shaft 17 a. It is apparent that the turning of the shaft 17a to move the common support for the lens 4 and the work support 15 will also through the cams 32 effect the movement of the work support 15 relatively to the lens 4. These cams 32 are cut due to imperfection in lenses to suit the focus of the lens 4 and will vary slightly with each lens. When the roller 31 cooperates with the low point of the cam, the work support 15 will be in its farthest position from the lens, and, as this roller 31 moves toward the high point the work support moves toward the lens. The shape of the cam is such that th work support travels faster on a reduction and slower on an enlargement. The weight of the work support holds the arms 30 against the cams 32.
In order to adapt the machine to work of different thicknesses adjustable connection is provided between the work support and its operating means. This adjustable connection, in this instance, embodies two screws 34 each connected to one of the flexible connections 27 and passed through an opening 35 in the work support. A thumb nut 36 engages said screw at the lower end of the opening and serves to effect the adjustment vbetween the flexible connection and the work support.
The operation of the invention will be understood from the foregoing but it may be summarized as follows. The work is put on the work support 15 and the shaft 17a is turned to effect the adjustment simultaneously of the lens and the work support relatively to the exposure field, and, at the same time, to effect the relative movement between the work support 14 and the lens 4. The common support for the lens 4 and the work support 15 is moved through the pinions 18 and the racks 19. At the same time the cams 32 operate on the arms 30 and turn the shaft 24 which operates on the flexible connections 27 and shifts the work support 15 on the common support for the lens 4 and such work support. If the front focus is not correct due to the fact that the work is too thick or too thin, then the adjustable connections 34, 35 and 36 are adjusted to cause the work support to correspond with the thickness of the work.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A photographic apparatus comprising an exposure field, a work support, a lens optically arranged between the work support and the exposure field, a common support for the lens and the work support movable relatively to the exposure field and having the work support movable thereon, a common operating mechanism for shifting the common support relatively to the exposure field and the work support relatively to the lens and a compensating means for varying the relative movement between the lens and one of the other two elements to correspond with the lens employed.
2. A photographic apparatus comprising an exposure field, a work support, a lens optically connected to the exposure field, a prism arranged between the lens and the work support, a common support for the lens, the prism and the work support for effecting the movement of such elements relatively to the exposure field, the work support being adjustable on the common support, a common operating means for moving the common support and also for shifting the work support on the common support relatively to the lens and the prism and a compensating means for varying the relative movement between the lens and one of the other two elements to correspond with the lens employed.
3. A photographic apparatus comprising an 'exposure field, a lens optically connected with the exposure field, a work support, a prism optically arranged between the lens and the work support, aV common support for the lens, the prism and the work support, the work support being horizontally arranged beneath the lens and the prism and vertically adjustable relatively to the prism, a common means for moving the common support relatively to the exposure field and for` moving the work support vertically relatively to the prism and a compensating means for varyingl the relative movement between the lens and one of the other two elements to correspond with the lens employed.

A photographic apparatus comprising an exposure field, a lens, a work support arranged horizontally below the lens, a common support for the lens and the work support on which the work support is vertically adjustable, reflecting means arranged between the lens and the work support and movable with said common support, common means for moving the common support relatively to the exposure field and for moving the work support on the common support and a compensating means for varying the relative movement between the lens and one of the other two elements to correspond with the lens employed.
5. A photographic apparatus comprising an exposure field, a lens, a work support arranged horizontally below the lens, a common support for the lens and the work support on which the work support is vertically adjustable, reflecting means arranged between the lens and the work support and movable with said common support, common means for moving the common support relatively to the exposure field and for moving the work support on the common support, and means permitting an adjustment between the work support and the common operating means to accommodate work of different thicknesses and a compensating means for varying the relative movement between the lens and one of the other two elements to correspond with the lens employed.
6. A photographic apparatus comprising an exposure field, rods guided horizontally below the exposure field, a lens, means supporting the lens on said rods engaged by the gears to shift the racks with the turning of the gears by the operating shaft above the latter, vertical guides depending from said rods, a work support movable on said vertical guides, a horizontal operating shaft, gears on said shaft, racks on the horizontal rods.l and a connection between said horizontal shaft and the work support through which the work support is moved on the vertical guides as the shaft is turned to shift the rods.
7. A photographic apparatus comprising an exposure field, a lens, a work support, a common support for the lens and the work support movable relatively to the exposure field and having guiding means thereon on which the work support is moved, a rack on said common support, a gear mounted on a fixed part and meshing with said rack to move the common support, and an operatingr connection between said gear and the work support for moving the work support on the common support relative to the lens.
8. A photographic apparatus comprising an exposure field, a lens, a work support, a common supportfor the lens and the work support movable relatively to the exposure field and having vertical guiding means thereon on which the work support is movable, anda common operating meansfor moving the common support and also for moving the work support on the common support.
9. A photographic apparatus comprising an exposure field, a lens, a work support, a common support for the work support and the lens movable relatively to the exposure field and having vertical guiding means on which the work support is adjusted, a shaft, segments on said shaft, flexible connections between the segments and the work support, and means for turning said shaft to move the work support on the common support and also for moving the common support for the lens and the work support.

A photographic apparatus comprising an exposure field, a lens, a work support, a common support for the lens and the work support movable relatively to the exposure field and having guiding means thereon for the work support, mechanism for operating thecommon support relatively to the work support, a cam operated by said mechanism, and means operated through the cam for effecting the movement of the work support relatively to the lens.

A photographic apparatus comprising an exposure field, a lens, a work support, a common support for the lens and the work support movable relatively to the exposure field and having guiding means thereon for the work support, mechanism for operating the common support relatively to the work support, a cam operated by said mechanism, and means operated through the cam for effecting the movement of the work support relatively to the lens, said means embodying a swinging arm, a segmental rack on said arm, a gear operated by said rack, and means connecting the gear with the work support for shifting the latter relatively to the lens.

A photographic apparatus comprising an exposure field, a lens, a work support, a common support for the lens and the work support, movable relatively to the exposure fie-ld and having vertical guiding means on which the work support is movable, a shaftgeared to the common support for moving the latter, a cam operated by said shaft, a swinging member having one arm cooperating with the cam and another arm provided with a gear segment, a gear meshing with said gear segment, a segment connected with said mentioned gear, and a flexible connection between said segment and the work support.

In a photographic apparatus the combination with a casing having a means for holding a sensitized sheet at exposure position, of a lens carrier, a horizontally arranged work support, a frame movable relative to the casing` on a line parallel with the optical axis of the photographic apparatus, said frame supporting said lens carrier and also supporting the work support below the lens carrier, and a reflector arranged to move With the frame to maintain opt-ical connection between the lens of the lens carrier and the work support.

In a photographic apparatus the combination with a casing having a means for holding a sensitized sheet at exposure position, of a lens carrier, a horizontally arranged work support, a frame movable relative to the casing on a line parallel with the optical axis of the photographic apparatus, said frame supporting said lens carrier and also supporting the work support below the lens carrier, a reflector arranged to move with the frame to maintain optical connection between the lens of the lens carrier and the work support, and means providing for the vertical adjustment of the Work support on the frame.
15. In a photographic apparatus the combination with a casing having an exposure chamber' and means for holding a sensitized sheet in exposure position, of a lens carrier, rods guided on the casing below the exposure chamber, means projecting upwardly from said guide rods and connected to the lens carrier, guide rods depending from the irst mentioned guide rods, and a horizontal Work support movable on the depending guided rods.
