The present invention relates to an earth handling structure, particularly to a construction of buckets and dippers having sides and bottom with a cutting lip along its front l edge. It is particularly adaptable to drag line buckets and the invention is illustrated as applied to such a bucket. It is desirable with such a bucket to have the front corners of the bucket rounded. Such a construction, however, if formed entirely of the plates of which t-he bucket is usually fashionedv requires heavy forming tools and expensive equipment. Vitli the present invention this corner is formed of a separate piece and inserted in a gore between the front edges of the sides and bot-toin plates and this permits of the forming of the bucket as a whole without flanging, or forming operations. It is also desirable to give to the lip a slight downward curve. This involves also a bending of the bottom plate to form this curve. Where the lip is formed separately the fiat plate forming the bottom can be readily drawn down to this shape as it is riveted to the lip, thus avoiding a forming operation as to this. In this manner it is possible to fashion a bucket having the desirably shaped front end without a heavy forming operation. Features and details of the invention will appear from the specification and claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Fig. 1 shows a plan view of the bucket.

1-1 mark the sides of the bucket. These sides follow the general contour of the sides of the bucket and the rounded rear ends. A bottom plate 2 is rolled up at its rear end 45 forming the back 3 of the bucket and the rear portions of the sides and bottom plates are welded together at 4. A cutting lip 5 formed of cast steel is arranged along the front of l the bucket. This has a shoulder 6 against w which the bottom plate abuts and is provided with teeth 7 in the usual manner. The teeth 7 have the rearwardly extending Shanks 8 andrib plates 9 extend from the shanks along the bottom plate to the back of the bucket.
VThe bottoni plate is cut away along its sides adjacent to the front at 10 and the side plate is similarly cut away along its bottoniV edge adjacentto the front along the line 11 as shown in. Fig.l 2.,- lThese cutting edges 'form a goreat the front'corner of the bucket. This gore is filled by a cast corner piece 12 which has a conically curved surface, the point of the gore terminating at the juncture of the side andbottom. The corner piece 12y has a shoulder 18 which engages the cut-away edge 11 and is extended with an overlapping iange 14 which overlaps the side 1 and to which it is secured by rivets. The corner piece also has a shoulder 15 which engages the cut-away portion of the bottoni plate and is provided along the bottoin with an overlapping ila-nge 16 which is secured to the bot-l toin plate by rivets 17. The corner platev has an extension 18 which isof the same thickness as the side and bottom plates and continues the closure for the gore to the shoulder 6 of the lip and forms the connection between the corner piece and the lip as-,well as the auxiliary side plates 1a. f
The cutting lip 5 is `slightly downwardly curved at 19 and the bottom plate 1 has the initial flat shape, as indicated at 2O in 4. It is drawn ydown to the curve of the lip as itis riveted in place7 thus avoiding the neces sity for any forming action as a preliminary to the fabrication of the bucket. In this way a very rigid and substantial structure is provided. The frontlip and corners have the desirable rounded surfaces and the lip the usual downward curve and the connection of the sides andv bottoni toward the rear is a simple welding operationand the lbottoni can be readily fashioned in an ordinary set oit rolls.
What we claim as new is 1. In an earth handling structure having a cutting edge; the'combination of sides and a bottom forming a gore between their edges adjacent to and extending rearwardly from the cutting edge; and corner pieces inserted ico" in the gores, said corner pieces having flanged edges overlapping1 the sides and bottom.
2. In an earth handling structure, the combination of sides and a bottom forming a gore between their edges; and corner pieces inserted` in the gores, the corner ieces having conical surfaces continuing an joining the sides and bottom.
